Conclusions 1. A practical method for the synthesis of (-)-4-methyl-3-heptanol, a component of the aggreational pheromone of theScolytus bark beetles, is described, from the accessible chiral hydrocarbon (+)-3,7-dimethyl-1,6-octadiene. The overall yield of (-)-4-methyl-3-heptanol is 17.6% over the nine stages of the synthesis. 2. The ratio of (3S, 4S)-to (3R,4S)-dia'stereoisomers in the (-)-4-methyl-3-heptanol obtained is 72∶28, and their optical purities are around 48%.
