Notes: Abstract The dual boundary element method for the analysis of cracks in linear elastic materials has been previously generalised by the authors to allow for automatic remeshing when crack tips intersect other cracks or boundaries, and initiation and growth of small cracks at positions of high stress concentration. The new cracks are assumed to result from sudden events such as an overload or the subsequent stress redistribution when cracks intersect other cracks or holes. In this paper a crack at the edge of one hole in a row of pin-loaded holes is investigated; various values are considered for the stress at which new cracks may initiate. Two rows of aligned or staggered holes are examined also. The spacing between the holes was typical for lines of holes in overlap joints in plates. For the same load transfer between the plates, new cracks are initiated less readily and grow more slowly for a double row of aligned holes than for a single row or for staggered rows.

Notes: Abstract Biotic and abiotic samples from two physically proximate, temperate, estuarine Hackensack River wetlands (New Jersey) located in highly urbanized areas were analyzed for chromium (total and hexavalent), copper, and lead. The study was performed to determine if chromite ore processing residues (COPR) in fill material surrounding one of the two sites (i.e., the “Study Site”) were associated with statistically significant higher total chromium concentrations in the biotic media at the Study Site relative to the other site (i.e., the “Reference Site”). Copper and lead concentrations were evaluated to determine whether other metals may have accumulated at the Study Site due to factors other than COPR. Concentrations of the three metals were evaluated in samples of water, sediment, plant tissue (Phragmites root and shoot tissues), fish tissue (Fundulus sp. whole body tissue), and blue crab tissues (Callinectes sapidus muscle and hepatopancreas tissues). Physical and chemical characteristics of the two sites that could have influenced the environmental fate and bioavailability of the metals were also evaluated. Concentrations of each of the three metals were approximately an order of magnitude higher in sediment samples from the Study Site. Concentrations of “total” and “dissolved” metals, however, were similar between the water samples collected at the two sites. Tidal flushing of the Study Site was restricted by tidal gates, and the higher metal concentrations in the sediments were attributed to factors resulting from the restricted tidal flushing. Statistically significant higher biota metal concentrations were found at the Study Site only for total chromium in blue crab hepatopancreas tissue and for lead in Phragmites shoot tissue. Tissues from the Study Site contained statistically significant lower concentrations of copper in all the biotic samples and of lead in blue crab hepatopancreas tissue than corresponding tissues from the Reference Site. Despite the Study Site sediments containing metal concentrations three to nine times greater than those in the Reference Site's sediments, no pattern of higher metal concentrations in biotic samples from the Study Site was found. The metals, including total chromium, were tightly bound to the sediments and therefore not bioavailable. Study Site sediment characteristics apparently limiting metal bioavailability included high organic carbon content, reducing conditions, high sulfide concentrations, high specific surface areas associated with a high proportion of silt and clay components, and high cation content.

Notes: The problem treated is the integration of singular functions which arise in three-dimensional isoparametric formulations of boundary integral equations. A Taylor expansion in the local parametric co-ordinates is developed for the singular integrand, so allowing singular terms to be integrated in closed form, even for curved surface elements. The remainder integral obtained by subtracting out the worst singularities is integrated by repeated Gaussian quadrature. Two groups of tests are presented. First, the accuracy of the integrations has been checked for plane parallelograms (for which exact solutions have been developed) and for curved elements on a sphere. Secondly, results from complete boundary element calculations based on point collocation have been compared with known analytical solutions to two problems; zonal surface harmonics on a sphere and the capacitance of an ellipsoid. The agreement obtained with few degrees-of-freedom suggests that errors which have previously been attributed to point collocation might have arisen in the numerical integration.

Notes: It is known that the transformation of a triangular curved element to a local plane square introduces a Jacobian which is effective in dealing with the numerical problems of evaluating the singular integrands arising from the presence of the inverse distance potential kernel in the boundary element method. It is shown that exact cancelling of the singularity occurs for triangular elements with linear, quadratic or cubic shape function representions.

Notes: The evalution of the inverse distance singular integrand which occurs in the three-dimensional boundary element formulation of potential problems is treated using weighted Gaussian integration. Three methods are investigated. The first involves repeated use of a one-dimensional Gaussian formula in which the weights are inverse powers. The second involves the inverse distance in the local parameter plane to which the surface elements are transformed. Comparisons with some exact integrals developed over plane parallelograms show that neither of these first two methods performs particularly well, with the second being appropriate only for integration over unit squares.A third method is developed using an approximation to the real space distance in the weighting. Such a method does take into account the local properties of the surface and gives integrals accurate to the precision of the computer being used for tests on a plane parallelogram. In a further test integrating over a curved element on a sphere, good accuracy is again achieved. Overall, however, in the type of integration test considered, none of these weighted Gaussian methods integrates as accurately as the expansion or transformation methods published elsewhere.
