    Notes: Three photoperiod-sensitive spring barley cultivars (Hordeum vulgare L.) and three independently derived, single-gene, nuclear mutants expressing photoperiod insensitivity and extremely early heading time under short daylengths were investigated for chloroplastic pigment variation in three environments using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to account for differences in laminae colour. In a greenhouse, non-stress environment and in a full sunlight, high-temperature stress environment, no systematic differences were observed among pigments of the mutant-parent pairs. However, under 12 h of daily light (600 μE m 2sec−1) and stress temperatures (20/10°C, night/day) in a growth chamber, the three mutants appeared similar to each other in chlorotic appearance and laminae pigment contents, but differed from the three non -chlorotic parents, which were similar to each other. The mutants had less chlorophyll a and b, β-carotene, lutein, taraxanthin, violaxanthin, and neoxanthin but more zeaxanthin than their parents. When shaded, the mutants became less chlorotic. How phenotypic differences for heading time and perception of day-length might be related to altered chloroplast contents remains unclear. The single-gene mutants conferring photopenod insensitivity were more sensitive to photothermal stress than their photoperiod-sensitive counterparts and as a result, their zeaxanthin content increased but the level of other pigments decreased.

    Notes: Summary From the methanol extract ofPimelea prostrata, prostratin (I) and 2 autoxidation products have been isolated. They are tigliane derivatives and relatively nonirritant on the mouse ear. The irritant pimelea factor P5 (IIa) also with a tigliane skeleton and related to mancinellin (IIb), as wellas the irritant diterpene ester pimelea factor P1 (IIa, simplexin) with daphnane skeleton, were found to be present in bothP. prostrata andP. simplex. Further the irritant homologue of simplexin, pimela factorIIIb was detected inP. prostrata. Some biogenetic consequences of these findings are discussed.

    Notes: Summary 39 species which belong to 14 genera were isolated from 110 milk samples collected from different dairy sources at Assiut City. The most frequent fungi wereA. niger, A. flavus andCladosporium cladosporioides, followed byCurvularia spicifera andPenicillium corylophilum. The remaining species were of rare occurrence. The fluorescence-method for detecting aflatoxin-producing strains demonstrated the presence of two isolates namelyA. flavus possesses this property. One of these toxic isolates was proved to produce high level of aflatoxin B1. It was used as a tool for determining the kinetic behaviour for the secretion of M1 toxin in milk of lactating animals which had received a toxic diet. The results revealed the following: 1. The milk toxin was detected in the milk of lactating animals next day after the toxin-containing ration was fed. 2. The level of milk toxin is gradually decreased when the feeding programme was interrupted. 3. When the animals supplied a ration containing the same concentration of aflatoxin for successive days, the milk toxin concentration was maintained at the same level. 4. The total amount of milk toxin secreted was less than one per cent of the amount of aflatoxin B1 received. 5. The concentration of milk toxin secreted by goats was higher than that of dairy cows. 6. Milk toxin failed to be detected five days after the feeding programme was discontinued.

Cu(C5H4NCOO)Cl kristallisiert tetragonal, Raumgruppe P42/n (No. 86),a=976.4(1),c=1499.6(4) pm,N=8;R w=0.048 für 543 beobachtete Mokα-Diffraktometerdaten. In der Kristallstruktur bilden zwei μ-chloro-Brücken nur wenig gewinkelte Cu2Cl2-Ringe aus [Cu-Cl=224.2(4) und 275.6(4) pm], mit Cu...Cu Abständen von 359.4(2) pm und Cl...Cl Abständen von 348.7(5) pm. Die kantenverknüpften Koordinationspolyeder der Kupferatome sind in Richtung derab-Ebene über die N- und O-Donoratome der Picolinat-Anionen [mit Cu-N Abständen von 199.6(12) pm und Cu-O Abständen von 195.7(8) und 200.6(10) pm] zu einer zweidimensionalen Schichtstruktur verknüpft. Jedes Picolinat-Anion fungiert als vierzähniger Ligand: N(1) und O(2) sind zum selben Cu(II)-Zentrum gebunden; O(1) ist zum benachbarten Cu(II)-Zentrum koordiniert, zu dem O(2) einen langen Cu-O-Abstand von 256.5(8) pm ausbildet. Die elektronischen, Infrarot- und Raman-Spektren des Festkörper-Komplexes werden berichtet und diskutiert.
    Notes: Summary The title complex of copper(II) chloride with picolinic acid was prepared and characterized by spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic methods. The complex, Cu(C5H4NCOO)Cl, crystallizes tetragonal, space group P42/n (No. 86),a=976.4(1),c=1499.6(4) pm,N=8;R w=0.048 for 543 observed MoKα diffractometer data. In the structure of the complex two μ-chloro bridges form only slightly bent Cu2Cl2 rings [Cu-Cl=224.2(4) and 275.6(4) pm] with Cu...Cu separation of 359.4(2) pm and Cl...Cl separation of 348.7(5) pm. These edge-sharing copper coordination polyhedra are further linked via the N and O donor atoms of the picolinato anions at Cu-N distances of 199.6(12) pm and Cu-O bond lengths of 195.7(8) and 200.6(10) pm, to form a two-dimensional layer structure in which these layers are arranged along theab plane. Each picolinate anion functions as a tetra-dentate ligand: N(1) and O(2) are coordinated to the same Cu(II) center whereas O(1) is bonded to a neighbouring Cu(II) center. O(2) is further bonded to the latter Cu(II) center at a long Cu-O distance of 256.5(8) pm. The electronic, infrared and Raman spectra of the solid complex are reported and discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The aflatoxins B1, G1 and their metabolites exist in the systemic blood as protein conjugate. This conjugation is specific to plasma albumin and proceeds enzymatically by liver and kidney cells. The aflatoxin-albumin conjugate is permanent and the conjugation is an irreversible one. This may interpret the acute liver damage of animal ingested a single dose of aflatoxin (3, 4). The existence of bound aflatoxin-albumin in the systematic blood could be considered as one factor of low excretions of aflatoxins and their metabolites in urine (5, 6, 7).
