Description: Efficiency of electric motors and generators is reduced by radial magnetic forces created by symmetric fields within device. Forces are sensed and counteracted by Hall devices on excitation or control windings. Hall generators directly measure and provide compensating control of anu asymmetry, eliminating additional measurements needed for calibration feedback control loop.

Description: The paper discusses the pointing and stability requirements of the individual experiments on board the Space Shuttle Orbiter, and describes the general features of certain solutions proposed for meeting these requirements. The Instrument Pointing Control Subsystem is examined, and its attitude control system is discussed.

Description: A velocity sensor is described for sensing the speed of a moving conductive body, employing an E-shaped magnetic core, having a pair of spaced Hall effect devices positioned on the end of the central core. The ends of all cores were arranged adjacent to the path of the moving conductive body. The difference in output voltage registered by the two Hall effect devices was indicative of the speed of the conductive body.

Description: A torque control for an electromechanical torquing device of a type where a variable clearance occurs between a rotor and field is described. A Hall effect device senses the field present, which would vary as a function of spacing between field and rotor. The output of the Hall effect device controls the power applied to the field so as to provide a well defined field and thus a controlled torque to the rotor which is well defined.

Description: After listing the basic requirements such as operational demands and lunar environmental conditions, characteristic design data of the roving vehicle are given with special attention to the four wheel drive and its control system, the steering system, and the navigational instrumentation. The overall system is optimized in view of total mass, range, mobility, load carrying capability, safety, highest reliability through redundancy, and last but not least, cost and development time. Optimization of the drive and power system has first been evaluated by mathematical models and computational simulation of the vehicle hardware, the wheel/soil interaction, and the lunar terrain profile. The next step to refine optimization and evaluation of the drive, steering, and power system including man/machine interaction has been carried out by the use of a six-degree-of-freedom simulator subjecting the astronauts in their space suits to simulated vehicle motions while driving over a simulated terrain, observable on a cathode ray tube display.
