Notes: The sorption and permeation of oxygen and nitrogen in and through alternating copoly(vinylidene cyanide-vinyl acetate) [copoly(VDCN-VAc)] (Tg = 176°C) membranes annealed for different periods just below Tg, 160°C, were investigated over the pressure range from 100 to 1000 cmHg. The dual-mode sorption and mobility models were used to analyze the results. A sub-Tg annealing of copoly(VDCN-VAc) caused a slight decrease in the amount of sorption in the membranes. This decrease in the amount of oxygen and nitrogen sorption can be attributed to a decrease in the Langmuir sorption capacity term, C′H, with increasing sub-Tg annealing period. The densification of copoly(VDCN-VAc) membranes caused simultaneously by the annealing remarkably reduced diffusion coefficients for both gases. The reduction in diffusion coefficients of Langmuir mode, DH, for both gases was found to be larger than that of Henry's law mode, DD. Furthermore, permselectivity of oxygen to nitrogen, the ratio of permeability coefficient of oxygen to nitrogen (PO2/PN2), reached to 11.8 for the copoly(VDCN-VAc) annealed for 30 h. Evidently the reduction of DH and DD for nitrogen with increasing annealing period was much larger than that for oxygen.

Notes: We have developed a new type of asymmetric membranes having a homogeneous hyperthin skin layer, which was used as a polyimide synthesized by 2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6FDA) and 2,2-bis(4-amino phenyl) hexafluoro-propane (BAAF). The skin layer thicknesses of the 6FDA-BAAF polyimide asymmetric membranes were 40-60 nm, and the porosity was 10-6% when a defect size was assumed as 5 nm. The permselectivity of 6FDA-BAAF polyimide asymmetric membranes after silicone coating had α of 40 for CO2/CH4 and a flux of 1.0 [Nm3/m2-h-atm] (=3.7 × 10-4 [cm3(STP)/cm2 s cmHg]) for CO2, α of 4.3 for O2/N2 and a flux of 2.0 × 10-1 [Nm3/m2/h/atm] (=7.1 × 10-5 [cm3(STP)/cm2s cmHg]) for O2. These values were constant for large-scale manufacturing. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: We examined the influence of polyaniline (PAn)'s unit sequence and doping with low molecular weight dopants or polymer dopants on permeation property. It was found that CO2 permeability was increased by the formation of a quinonediimine unit in PAn with the oxidation. CO2 sorption amount of PAn was decreased by oxidation. The increase of CO2 permeability with oxidation, therefore, resulted from the increase of diffusivity, which was attributable to morphological variation by the increase of a quinonediimine unit. The permselectivity of PAn films was found to be remarkably improved by doping. In particular, the selectivity value of the PAn film doped with polyvinyl sulphonic acid as a polymer dopant went up to over 2,000. This remarkable increase of selectivity was found to result in the increase of selectivity, depending on diffusivity. It was also found that the permselectivity of the PAn film doped by polymer dopants was surpassed, as compared with that doped by low molecular dopants. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
