Notes: The introduction of Europe's single currency will have an immediate effect on the financial sectors of participating economies. While research in this area has focused on the broad implications for Europe's banking structure, this has been at the neglect of the smaller European financial centres which, while peripheral, make important contributions to their domestic economies. As a representative study, this paper examines how the recent developments in Ireland's financial sector will be affected by the introduction of the euro. It focuses on the probable contraction of Dublin's financial markets and assesses the threat of foreign acquisition facing its main domestic clearing banks.

Notes: The decision on which countries will participate in European Monetary Union (EMU) is to take place as early as possible in 1998, with the final run in, regarding the technicalities of introducing a single currency, starting on 1 January 1999. With this timetable in mind, examines some of the major issues which will have to be confronted by UK retailers. Even if the UK Government decides to opt out, the increasing internationalization of retailing will mean that UK retailers will have to face a Euro-denominated environment over a significant range of its business activities. Consequently, by identifying EMU factors which specifically relate to retailing, identifies the key areas which retailers need to consider in planning a strategy to take account of the possibility that EMU will take place in at least some major EU economies.

Notes: Completion of the European Single Market Programme in Financial Services has, as expected, set in motion a rationalisation process within the European banking industry, as banks respond to increasing competitive pressures that are having a dampening effect on their traditional business margins. Assesses the importance of these developments in the context of the policy options that are open to the European banking community in the new millennium. In particular, given the prospect of an integrated European economy, now commonly referred to as Euroland, the paper addresses, as its central theme, the potential for the development of pan-European banks that would then be in a position to configure longer-term globalisation strategies. Evolution in this direction, if it occurs, is important from a European Central Bank policy perspective, since it would raise systemic risk issues if a small number of European licensed banks became "too big to fail". We conclude, however, that the most prominent strategic response is likely to be based on the European "regionalisation" of banks and markets rather than pan-Europeanisation.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR - Jon Darius (Nature 308, 18; 1984) says the recovery of the Lost City meteorite was the first time that photographs from synchronized cameras were used to predict the place of fall of a meteorite. It was not; the Pribram, Czechoslovakia, fall of 7 April 1959 was photographed as a bright ...

Notes: The high-temperature step that is required in a manufacturing process can contribute substantially to the cost. A technical cost framework (TCF) that allows trends in these costs to be determined as a function of the essential variables provides opportunities for their minimization. The basic variables are the furnace capacity, the operating temperature, and the furnace construction. The dependent variables are power, acquisition, and replacement. Information from thermal and process models as well as the furnace element life expectancy provides the functions needed to conduct the minimization through the TCF. The overall strategy is developed and illustrated with examples.

Notes: Abstract In the burgeoning literature on small firm financing, the problem of underidentification in respect to the supply of, and demand for, capital has not been fully resolved. In an attempt to progress this issue, the current paper looks at some of the issues influencing the demand for finance in small firms which are owner-managed. The paper is primarily exploratory in nature and argues that a greater emphasis might usefully be placed on the cost of capital dimension in future research into small business financing. In particular, it is suggested that where the objective of an owner-manager is to maintain control of the firm, interdependent investment and financing strategies may be chosen to control the small firms cost of capital. This in turn indicates that the tendency for some small firms to invest sub-optimally and exhibit slower than average growth may not be primarily determined by limitations on their supplies of finance. On the demand side, it may well be that in addition to equity aversion, a suboptimal capital structure decision is made in the form of a reduced demand for debt. In other words, given the level of equity that an owner-manager chooses, debt may not be fully expanded to the capacity limit consistent with value maximisation.

Notes: Abstract A recent study conducted by Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) evaluated technical information transfer from Japan to the United States. This evaluation was part of a larger assessment of international monitoring of energy technology development conducted for the U.S. Department of Energy. For this study, U.S. researchers in each of ten selected technical fields were identified and interviewed to obtain their perceptions of information transfer from Japan. Results from these interviews indicated that, although there are major differences among the technical fields, U.S. researchers generally consider information transfer from Japan to the U.S. to be inadequate. Researchers particularly noted the difficulties they have attending conferences in Japan or visiting Japanese research facilities. In contrast, Japanese researchers attend all major conferences and frequently visit laboratories in the U.S. Researchers recommended several steps to improve technology transfer from Japan, including improving the screening and translation of technical material published in Japan, promoting binational seminars and workshops, and encouraging laboratory visits and exchanges of research personnel.

Notes: Abstract The structure of nine commercially manufactured aluminum-containing adjuvants was investigated by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron micrography, and energy dispersive spectrometry. Seven samples which were labeled as aluminum hydroxide were identified as boehmite, a crystalline aluminum oxyhydroxide [AIO(OH)]. However, the degree of crystallinity varied between the samples. Two samples which were labeled as aluminum phosphate were found to be amorphous aluminum hydroxyphosphate. Buffer anions and sulfate anions substitute for hydroxyls in the amorphous aluminum hydroxide formed by the in situ alum precipitation method. Finally, the aluminum-containing adjuvant in diphtheria and tetanus toxoid, U.S.P., produced by three manufacturers was characterized.
