    Notes: CH free radicals in an oxyacetylene flame at atmospheric pressure were detected by means of the two-color resonant four-wave mixing technique. Ground-state grating schemes with ω1=ω2 (pump) and ω3 (probe)=ω4 (signal) were used; ω1(=ω2) and ω3 are in resonance with distinct rovibronic transitions of B 2Σ−−X 2Π and A 2Δ−X 2Π of CH, respectively. Varying the relative polarization of the pump and probe beams significantly affects the ratio of signal to noise. Two schemes with cross polarization pairs (ω1⊥ω2) and (ω3⊥ω4) produced results best suited to detect trace species in the luminous, dense medium; the relative J dependence observed for these schemes agrees with theoretical predictions. The double-resonance feature of this technique, advantageous to identify congested lines, is also demonstrated. When an A–X transition line is employed as a probe, previously unobserved predissociative levels of B 2Σ− are detected; the R(12) line of B←X (1,0) transion has a halfwidth greater than 10 cm−1, corresponding to a lifetime of 0.5 ps. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The purpose of this article is to quantify the public health risk associated with inhalation of indoor airborne infection based on a probabilistic transmission dynamic modeling approach. We used the Wells-Riley mathematical model to estimate (1) the CO2 exposure concentrations in indoor environments where cases of inhalation airborne infection occurred based on reported epidemiological data and epidemic curves for influenza and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), (2) the basic reproductive number, R0 (i.e., expected number of secondary cases on the introduction of a single infected individual in a completely susceptible population) and its variability in a shared indoor airspace, and (3) the risk for infection in various scenarios of exposure in a susceptible population for a range of R0. We also employ a standard susceptible-infectious-recovered (SIR) structure to relate Wells-Riley model derived R0 to a transmission parameter to implicate the relationships between indoor carbon dioxide concentration and contact rate. We estimate that a single case of SARS will infect 2.6 secondary cases on average in a population from nosocomial transmission, whereas less than 1 secondary infection was generated per case among school children. We also obtained an estimate of the basic reproductive number for influenza in a commercial airliner: the median value is 10.4. We suggest that improving the building air cleaning rate to lower the critical rebreathed fraction of indoor air can decrease transmission rate. Here, we show that virulence of the organism factors, infectious quantum generation rates (quanta/s by an infected person), and host factors determine the risk for inhalation of indoor airborne infection.

    Notes: Abstract The 2,3-butanediol dehydrogenase and the acetoin-cleaving system were simultaneously induced in Pseudomonas putida PpG2 during growth on 2,3-butanediol and on acetoin. Hybridization with a DNA probe covering the genes for the E1 subunits of the Alcaligenes eutrophus acetoin cleaving system and nucleotide sequence analysis identified acoA (975 bp), acoB (1020 bp), acoC (1110 bp), acoX (1053 bp) and adh (1086 bp) in a 6.3-kb genomic region. The amino acid sequences deduced from acoA, acoB, and acoC for E1α (Mr 34639), E1β (Mr 37268), and E2 (Mr 39613) of the P. putida acetoin cleaving system exhibited striking similarities to those of the corresponding components of the A. eutrophus acetoin cleaving system and of the acetoin dehydrogenase enzyme system of Pelobacter carbinolicus and other bacteria. Strong sequence similarities of the adh translational product (2,3-butanediol dehydrogenase, Mr 38361) were obtained to various alcohol dehydrogenases belonging to the zinc- and NAD(P)-dependent long-chain (group I) alcohol dehydrogenases. Expression of the P. putida ADH in Escherichia coli was demonstrated. The aco genes and adh constitute presumably one single operon which encodes all enzymes required for the conversion of 2,3-butanediol to central metabolites.

    Notes: Abstract Four ben genes responsible for the conversion of benzoate to catechol in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO have been mapped to a 4.6 kb KpnI fragment. ben-1 and ben-4 were known to be separate genes but now ben-1508 has been found to be different from ben-2. The two genes were distinguished by Tn5 mutagenesis of a cosmid clone and deletion mapping. It is likely that the four genes mapped (ben-4, ben-2, ben-1508 and ben-1) correspond to the previously characterized benR (regulatory gene) and benABC (benzoate dioxygenase) respectively.

    Notes: Abstract Genes responsible for the utilization of benzoate, anthranilate or catechol (ben, ant, cat) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO were mapped precisely using a cosmid clone carrying all these genes. Genes were localized either by subcloning and complementation or by Tn5 mutagenesis and mapping of the Tn5 insertion. To achieve this, a novel Tn5 mutagenesis procedure was developed by constructing a Tn5 insertion derivative of the Escherichia coli strain S17-1. Preliminary mapping of the ben cat genes of P. putida PPN was accomplished by complementation using a PPN cosmid bank. Sequence homology was demonstrated by Southern hybridization between the ben regions of both P. aeruginosa and P. putida, implying an evolutionary relationship of this chromosomal region of these two pseudomonads.

    Notes: Purpose - The current leadership literature has paid little attention to understanding the intervening mechanism by which leaders influence followers. In order to partially bridge this gap, the article aims to present a value-fit charismatic leadership theory which focusses on the key intervening mechanism - person-organization values fit. Design/methodology/approach - The model was tested empirically on 180 participants, including 51 managers and 129 employees from 37 large-scale companies in Taiwan. Findings - Based on the block regression analysis, the results showed that CEO charismatic leadership has both direct and indirect effects on employees' extra effort to work, satisfaction with the CEO, as well as organizational commitment, which are mediated by employees' perceived person-organization values fit. The findings also provided evidence that the relationship between charismatic leadership and person-organization values fit is significant. Furthermore, the analysis also showed the significant effects of person-organization values fit on employee outcomes. Originality/value - The study shows how CEO charismatic leadership can, through the mediating effect of person-organization values fit, have profound influence on employee outcomes.

    Notes: Piezoelectric motors have been successfully developed for various applications likeautofocus drives in camera lenses and manufacturing equipment for semiconductor production. Theirhigh speed and accurate positioning capability, combined with a moderate holding torque, makepiezo motors also very attractive for actuation purposes in spacecraft mechanisms. However, thesemotors require high driving voltage and have only a small driving torque. In this paper, the authorshave developed a novel magnetostrictive rotary motor using Terfenol-D (Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.9) material asthe driving elements. The small movement of the magnetostrictive actuator is scaled to 3 times byusing flexible flexure hinges, a special designed mechanism is used to combine 3 such actuators toform a pure rotation movement and this movement is used to drive the rotor of the motor. Prototype ofthis research is made and a commonly 3-phase alternating current is used to drive the motor.Experiments are also carried on in the lab of School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering ofHangzhou Dianzi University
