    Description: An empirical fatality model for Indonesia has been developed by relating the macroseismic intensity to the fatality rate using compiled sub-district level fatality rate data and the numerically simulated ground-shaking intensity for four recent damaging events. The fatality rate data were compiled by collecting population and fatality statistics of the regions affected by the selected events. The ground-shaking intensity was numerically estimated by incorporating a finite-fault model of each event and local site conditions approximated by topographically based site amplifications. The macroseismic intensity distribution of each event was generated using ShakeMap software, combining a selected pair of ground motion prediction equations and ground motion to intensity conversion equations. The developed fatality model is a Bayesian generalized linear model in which the fatality rate is assumed to follow a mixture of Bernoulli and gamma distributions. The model was validated by calculating the fatalities in past events from the EXPO-CAT catalogue and comparing the estimates with the EXPO-CAT fatality records. Although the model can provide an estimate of the range of fatalities for future events, it needs ongoing refinement by the incorporation of additional fatality rate data from past and future events.

    Description: Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a Gram-negative, motile, nonspore-forming pathogen that causes foodborne illness associated with the consumption of contaminated seafoods. Although many cases of foodborne outbreaks caused by V. parahaemolyticus have been reported, the genomes of only five strains have been completely sequenced and analyzed using bioinformatics. In order to characterize overall virulence factors and pathogenesis of V. parahaemolyticus associated with foodborne outbreak in South Korea, a new strain FORC_008 was isolated from flounder fish and its genome was completely sequenced. The genomic analysis revealed that the genome of FORC_008 consists of two circular DNA chromosomes of 3266 132 bp (chromosome I) and 1772 036 bp (chromosome II) with a GC content of 45.36% and 45.53%, respectively. The entire genome contains 4494 predicted open reading frames, 129 tRNAs and 31 rRNA genes. While the strain FORC_008 does not have genes encoding thermostable direct hemolysin (TDH) and TDH-related hemolysin (TRH), its genome encodes many other virulence factors including hemolysins, pathogenesis-associated secretion systems and iron acquisition systems, suggesting that it may be a potential pathogen. This report provides an extended understanding on V. parahaemolyticus in genomic level and would be helpful for rapid detection, epidemiological investigation and prevention of foodborne outbreak in South Korea.

    Description: To verify the periodic boundary condition (PBC) treatment which was implemented in a TRI-angle elements induced numerical analyzer (TRIAINA), the pressure tube creep problem is chosen and examined with three cases of normal, 2.5% creep, and 5.0% creep on the aspects of the multiplication factor and relative pin power. The McCARD code is used for the homogenized group constants generation. It is shown that the differences are nearly negligible for the pressure tube creep problem.

    Description: The climate sensitive analysis of potential climate change on streamflow has been conducted using a hydrologic model to identify hydrologic variability associated with climate scenarios as a function of perturbed climatic variables (e.g., carbon dioxide, temperature, and precipitation). The interannual variation of water resources availability as well as low flow frequency driven by monsoonal time shifts have been investigated to evaluate the likelihood of droughts in a changing climate. The results show that the timing shift of the monsoon window associated with future climate scenarios clearly affect annual water yield change of -12% and -8% corresponding to 1-month earlier and 1-month later monsoon window, respectively. Also, more severe low flow condition has been predicted to 0.03m 3 /s as opposed to historic 7Q10 flow of 1.54m 3 /s at given an extreme climate scenarios. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Description: 〈p〉Existing vital sign monitoring systems in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) require multiple wires connected to rigid sensors with strongly adherent interfaces to the skin. We introduce a pair of ultrathin, soft, skin-like electronic devices whose coordinated, wireless operation reproduces the functionality of these traditional technologies but bypasses their intrinsic limitations. The enabling advances in engineering science include designs that support wireless, battery-free operation; real-time, in-sensor data analytics; time-synchronized, continuous data streaming; soft mechanics and gentle adhesive interfaces to the skin; and compatibility with visual inspection and with medical imaging techniques used in the NICU. Preliminary studies on neonates admitted to operating NICUs demonstrate performance comparable to the most advanced clinical-standard monitoring systems.〈/p〉

    Description: Effects of firing atmosphere on the color manifestation of celadon were studied. The firing atmosphere was obtained by the combustion of LPG, which generates CO gas during incomplete combustion, which acted as the reducing agent. The amount of CO gas increased as the amount of injected LPG gas increased. As the amount of generated CO gas was few little, the a* and b* values was high, which exhibits a brown color. When the amount of CO gas increased, the a* and b* decreased, resulting in a deep blue color. The residual oxygen analysis result suggested that the amount of residual oxygen in the glaze decreased as the firing atmosphere changed towards reduction. This can be explained by the oxidation of the CO gas into CO 2 by seizing a large amount of oxygen in the glaze.

    Description: The effect of phospholipids on the kinetic parameters of three substrates, 7-ethoxy-4 -(trifluoromethyl)coumarin (7-EFC), 7-ethoxycoumarin (7-EC) and 17β-estradiol (E 2 ), of human CYP1B1 was studied. In general, anionic phospholipids, phosphatidic acid and cardiolipin increased catalytic efficiency by increasing k cat values or decreasing K m values. The advantages of using the 7-EFC as a substrate over 7-EC and E 2 include high k cat , low K m and high catalytic efficiency. Spectral binding titrations indicated that the binding affinity of 7-EFC to CYP1B1 in the presence or absence of phospholipids is higher than that of 7-EC or E 2 . Furthermore, phosphatidylcholine increased the binding affinity of the substrates to the CYP1B1. High non-competitive intermolecular kinetic deuterium isotope effects (values 5.4–12) were observed for O -deethylation of 7-EFC and 7-EC with deuterium substitution at the ethoxy group, indicating that the C–H bond-breaking step makes a major contribution to the rate of these CYP1B1-catalyzed reactions. However, the intermolecular kinetic deuterium isotope effect is ~2 for the E 2 4-hydroxylation reaction, indicating that the C–H bond-breaking step contributes only partially to the rate of this CYP1B1-catalyzed reaction. These results indicate that the reaction mechanism of CYP1B1-catalyzed reactions is distinct for each substrate.

    Description: Flowering plants possess a unique reproductive strategy, involving double fertilization by twin sperm cells. Unlike animal germ lines, the male germ cell lineage in plants only forms after meiosis and involves asymmetric division of haploid microspores, to produce a large, non-germline vegetative cell and a germ cell that undergoes one further division to produce the twin sperm cells. Although this switch in cell cycle control is critical for sperm cell production and delivery, the underlying molecular mechanisms are unknown. Here we identify a novel F-box protein of Arabidopsis thaliana, designated FBL17 (F-box-like 17), that enables this switch by targeting the degradation of cyclin-dependent kinase A;1 inhibitors specifically in male germ cells. We show that FBL17 is transiently expressed in the male germ line after asymmetric division and forms an SKP1-Cullin1-F-box protein (SCF) E3 ubiquitin ligase complex (SCF(FBL17)) that targets the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors KRP6 and KRP7 for proteasome-dependent degradation. Accordingly, the loss of FBL17 function leads to the stabilization of KRP6 and inhibition of germ cell cycle progression.
