Notes: Abstract The tropical rain forest landscape has been transformed to a mosaic composed of patches of crops, secondary vegetation and remnant forest fragments of different shapes and sizes. Isolation of patches and fragments is a critical issue in the maintenance of local species diversity. In this study we focus on the dispersal of propagules by birds to understant the movement of plants between landscape components. Seed deposition and the behavior of frugivorous birds were monitored at four isolated fig trees (Ficus yoponensis and F. aurea) in man-made pastures. Seed deposition was measured by trapping seeds under canopy trees for six months and by direct observation of bird visits to the four trees for one year. Seed deposition densities were 465, 614, 632 and 1097 seeds/m2 accumulated over six months under each of the four trees. We recorded 8268 seeds of 107 species under the trees, among them, 6726 seeds (81%) were of 56 species dispersed by vertebrate frugivores. Seeds of tree species accounted for 26% of the total species. Seventy-three species of birds perched in the observed trees, and 3344 visits were made by 47 species of frugivores. Frugivorous birds occurred in two groups: resident species nesting in the pastures and resident species nesting elsewhere. Propagule exchange between landscape components is clearly influenced by the behavior of these two groups. Structure and dynamics of the landscape depend on plant species availability within the mosaic. This availability is high and suggests possibilities for the management of the local species diversity of tropical rain forests.

Notes: Abstract The235U fission neutron spectrum averaged cross section for the50Ti(n,α)47Ca reaction was experimentally determined by irradiation of titanium with reactor neutrons. A value of (9.7±1.1) μb was found for this cross section, using (307±11) μb for the48Ti(n,p)48Sc spectrum-averaged cross section that was used as a standard. The50Ti(n,α)47Ca spectrum-averaged cross section was also semiempirically evaluated by numerically integrating, through the ENDF/B-V representation of the235U fission neutron spectrum, the available experimental differential cross section data.

Notes: Abstract We investigated the use of threshold reactions on magnesium, aluminum, silicon and phosphorus to determine elemental concentrations and also to correct analytical interferences, using the parametric method. The reactor neutron spectrum averaged cross sections of the threshold reactions on these elements were referred to the (111±3) mb value for the 58Ni(n,p)58g+mCo reaction cross section. The results of the cross section measurements are: 25Mg(n,p)25Na, 1.57±0.12 mb; 28Si(n,p)28Al, 5.68±0.25 mb; 29Si(n,p)29Al, 3.02±0.15 mb; 30Si(n,α)27Mg, 0.1346±0.0090 mb; and 31P(n,α)28Al, 1.912±0.083 mb. The values for the cross sections of the following reactions: 24Mg(n,p)24Na, 1.441±0.092 mb; 27Al(n,p)27Mg, 3.84±0.18 mb; and 27Al(n,α)24Na 0.721±0.028 mb were re-measured to check the methodology. We present the application of these values to the analysis of some reference materials.

Notes: Abstract In this work the determination of elemental composition of MIBI, MAG-3 and sodium phytate by INAA was investigated. Analytical information about the concentration and/or detection limits of some toxic elements (Hg, Cd, As, Se, Sb) and other trace element of interest (Fe, Cr, Co, Zn, Br) was obtained.

Notes: Abstract Se in Ni and Co concentration in concentrates obtained from the nickel industry has to be determined for quality control requirements in their commercialization. Analysis of Se at minor and trace levels is relatively complicated and destructive procedures are frequently required. In this work the determination of Se by epithemal neutron activation analysis (ENAA) in 17 samples from Cuban nickel industry was investigated. Application of ENAA allowed nondestructive determination of Se concentration down to ppm level in spite of the presence of high Co, Fe, Ni and Cr contents in the samples. For attenuation of the thermal neutron flux a Cd filter was utilized.

Notes: Abstract The feasibility of validating data obtained in the determination of chlorine, potassium, and calcium by neutron capture activation analysis, through their determination using threshold reactions has been studied. To this purpose the authors experimentally determined the following fission neutron spectrum averaged cross sections (in mb):37Cl(n,p)37S, 0.234±0.015;41K(n,α)38Cl, 0.740±0.044;42Ca(n,p)42K, 3.09±0.22;43Ca(n,p)43K, 2.27±0.12;44Ca(n,p)44K, 0.074±0.013. The application of these values to the analysis of some reference materials are presented. Also, the problem of mutual interferences has been addressed for the following pairs:36S(n,Γ)37S and37Cl(n,p)37S;37Cl(n,Γ)38Cl and41K(n,α)38Cl;41K(n,ψ)42K and42Ca(n,p)42K.

Notes: Abstract Thirty elements were determined by INAA in Cuban soil samples collected in 17 zones from western regions of Cuba, which were affected by neuropathy epidemic in 1992. The presence of toxic elements was evaluated to provide data for the analysis of possible paths of intoxication through local agriculture product consumption. The results obtained for As, Th and U are compared with similar data reported on literature.

Notes: Abstract Five species of epiphytic lichens were sampled from urban and periurban areas of Bariloche, a non industrial city located on the East side of the Nahuel Huapi National Park, North-Western Patagonia, Argentina, and from pristine areas of the Park. Each individual lichen was analyzed using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis. The results of the analysis showed high concentrations of lithophile elements, with very good correlations among them. The relative concentration of these elements in all lichen species is in good agreement with the elemental composition of sediments collected in the Park. Elemental concentrations which are not related to detritical inputs are also presented.

Notes: Abstract The elemental composition of lichens from remote southern South America regions has been studied with analytical and statistical techniques to determine if the values obtained reflect species, growth forms or habitat characteristics. The enrichment factors are calculated discriminated by species and collection site and compared with data available in the literature. The elemental concentrations are standardized and compared for different species. The information was statistically processed, a cluster analysis was performed using the three first principal axes of the PCA; the three groups formed are presented. Their relationship with the species, collection sites and the lichen growth forms are interpreted.

Notes: Abstract Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) is a well-known analytical method for nondestructive, sensitive and accurate determination of elemental composition of geological samples. In the present work twenty-two elements were determined by INAA in nine rhyolitic geological samples from a wolframium ore body Lela, located in the territory of Isla de la Juventud, Cuba. The obtained results are important for the preliminary geochemical evaluation of the studied rocks.
