    Notes: Specific antibody responses to Flavobacterium columnare (isolate ATCC 23463T) were characterized in plasma and mucus of tilapia following intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection or immersion immunization with formalin-killed sonicated or whole cell preparations. Fish (30 per treatment) received a primary immunization and were booster immunized 4 weeks later. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed for detection and quantification of specific anti-F. columnare antibody, and it was found that formalin-killed sonicated cells in Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) injected i.p. stimulated a significant systemic antibody response within 2 weeks (mean titre 11 200) which increased to 30 600 following secondary immunization. At 10 weeks post-immunization, the mean titre remained significantly elevated above the controls. Antibodies were also observed in cutaneous mucus of fish immunized i.p. with formalin-killed sonicated cells in FCA at 6 and 8 weeks post-immunization (mean titres 67 and 33, respectively). Although some individual fish responded, mean plasma and cutaneous mucus antibody titres were not significantly greater than controls in any of the other treatment groups. The results of this study demonstrate that tilapia can mount a significant humoral response in plasma and cutaneous mucus to F. columnare, but i.p. immunization with FCA is required to elicit this response.

    Notes: Short fatigue crack growth tests have been carried out at room and elevated temperatures using the nickel-based superalloy known as Waspaloy. A fully automated computer controlled system has been developed and employed for controlling the testing and monitoring of the growth of freely initiated surface short cracks on smooth specimens. Surface cracks as small as 10 um in length have been detected and recorded at temperatures up to 700°C. Anomalous short crack propagation behaviour was observed when comparisons were made with the corresponding long crack behaviour. Some aspects of mechanical, microstructural and environmental effects on the short fatigue crack growth behaviour of the material are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract— This paper describes the use of an optical crack monitoring system designed to examine the growth behaviour of short/long fatigue cracks in Waspaloy at room and elevated temperature. Its use at 19 and 500°C is demonstrated at stress ratios of 0.1 and -1. Fatigue crack formation was associated with slip band cracking at both R= 0.1 and R= -1. At 19°C short crack growth at R= -1 and R= 0.1 could not be normalized by adopting a positive stress approach. The compressive part of the fatigue cycle at R= -1 contributed to short crack growth at 19°C and long crack growth at 500°C.

    Notes: Abstract— Fatigue crack growth rates in corner notched specimens of forged Ti-6A1-4V, used in the manufacture of rotating aero-engine components, have been measured for fatigue loadings that combine major and minor stress cycles. The loadings are simple representations of the flight cycle and the potential in-flight vibrations, each loading block consisting of high-frequency minor cycles superimposed on the major cycle dwell at maximum load. The crack growth rates are dependent on the number and stress ratio of the minor cycles, but only when they individually contribute to the growth of the crack. Estimates of the fatigue threshold values and near-threshold growth rates associated with the minor cycles have been made, all potential load history effects having been ascribed to the minor cycle component of the loading. Using this data, satisfactory crack propagation life predictions have been demonstrated for a wide range of test conditions involving the conjoint action of major and minor stress cycles.

    Notes: Abstract— This paper provides a description of the features and mechanisms of facetted short crack growth in Ni-base superalloys, and briefly reviews existing short crack growth models in terms of their application to Ni-base alloys.The concept of “soft barriers” is introduced to produce a new two-phase model for local microstructural effects on short crack growth in Waspaloy. This is derived from detailed observations of crack growth through individual grains. The model differs from all previous approaches in highlighting the importance of crack path perturbations within grains. Potential applications of the model in alloy development are discussed.

Freely initiated fatigue cracks as small as 34 μ were detected using this system. Frequent monitoring enabled crack growth to be recorded over 2000 cycle increments.     Notes: Abstract A variety of different preparation techniques have been used in order to identify the experimental conditions under which interface phases are formed in the near-α alloy, IMI 834. In particular, a Ni plated surface examined in cross-section in the TEM produced a gradation in hydrogen content from high at the surface to low levels in the bulk. Two transformation products have been identified, one was a monolithic f c c phase with a lattice parameter of a=0.434 ±0.004 nm, which forms along α-platelet boundaries, and the second was an acicular feature which formed between α-platelet boundaries which was tentatively identified as an h c p phase twin related to the α-titanium. The monolithic interface phase was found to form at both low and high hydrogen levels while the α twins were only seen at high hydrogen contents. In all cases, the transformations were shown to be artefactual and induced solely by hydrogen absorption. No evidence of mechanical strain induced interface phase formation was found. In conflict with the literature, the monolithic f c c phase was found to occur during ion-beam milling and was attributed to water contamination of the milling gas. Formation of the interface phase was suppressed by electropolishing at temperatures ≤ −50 °C.
