    Notes: The eubacterial enhancer-binding proteins activate transcription by binding to distant sites and, simultaneously, contacting the RNA polymerase σ54 promoter complex (Eσ54). The positive control function is located at the central domain of these proteins, but it is not know which specific region has the determinants for the interaction with Eσ54. Here, we present genetic evidence that a small region of hydrophobic amino acids, previously denominated C3, at the central domain of Bradyrhizobium japonicum NifA is involved in positive control. We obtained 26 missense mutants along this conserved region. Among these, only strains expressing the NifAF307→Y and NifAA310→S mutant proteins retained some of the transcriptional activity (〈 20%), whereas those carrying NifAE298→D and NifAT308→S had very low but detectable activity (〈 1.0%). The rest of the NifA mutants did not induce any measurable transcriptional activity. When expressed in the presence of wild-type NifA, the great majority of the mutants displayed a dominant phenotype, suggesting that their oligomerization determinants were not altered. In vivo dimethyl-sulphate footprinting experiments for a subset of the NifA mutants showed that they were still able to bind specifically to DNA. Analysis of intragenic supressors highlight the functional role of a hydroxyl group at position 308 to activate transcription.

    Notes: Abstract:  Academic research into firms that have gone public has focused on the study of two anomalies: initial underpricing and long-run underperformance. We analyse Spanish Initial Public Offerings to provide additional evidence on the long-run performance of IPOs and its relationship with initial underpricing. Results reveal the existence of negative long-run abnormal stock returns, in line with the international literature. Long-run performance presents a positive relationship with underpricing and the volume of funds obtained in seasoned offerings, in consonance with the predictions of Allen and Faulhaber (1989), Welch (1989) and Grinblatt and Hwang (1989).

The validity of the formula was tested using circular dichroism spectroscopy after variation of the type of salt (NaCl, MgCl2), the salt concentration, and the temperature of the polynucleotide solution. A consequence of the proposed function is that in conditions of high salt there is a predictable salt threshold which determines the particular molecular mechanism of the B-Z transition. The paper also describes the way in which this threshold level is temperature dependent. A detailed comparison of our data with the experimental data found by other authors is given. The function agrees quantitatively with the experiments and explains the contrasting results found in the literature about the influence in the B-Z transition of both the temperature and the polymer size.

    Notes: Abstract Regional seismic apparent attenuation was estimated for Costa Rica, Central America, by using a time domain single scattering model of the shear wave coda decay of local earthquakes. The sensitivity of coda Q (Qc) measurements with respect to geological differences in the crust is demonstrated in eight sub-regions with a large variety of tectonic and geologic properties. The Qc estimations were performed for 96 selected local earthquakes recorded at 13 sites during a period of three months. In order to model the scattering as a weak process and to avoid short distance nonlinear effects, we made use of the S-wave coda data only from events within a hypocentral distance of 12 to 106 km with a lapse time between 9 and 53 s. Seismograms were also divided into groups with three different focal depths d, namely d〈21 km, 21 km〈d〈43 km and 43 km〈d〈94 km. As in many other investigations, the Qc values are frequency dependent in the range 1–9 Hz, and are approximated by a least-squares fit to the power law Qc(f) = Q0(f/f0)n. The estimated parameters of the power-law dependence of Qc for the whole region, including all depths and possible wave paths, are Q0 = 91 (± 8.4) and n = 0.72 (±0.071). Differences in the parameter of Qc for different depths intervals are small, ranging from Q0 = 90 (±0.7) and n = 0.70 (±0.006) for the uppermost group, with focal depths less than 21 km, to Q0 = 97 (±0.7) and n = 0.79 (±0.005) for the deepest group with focal depths larger than 43 km. The regional differences in Qc for the eight sub-regions are significantly larger when compared with the differences between the three focal depth groups. An attempt is made to interpret the variation of Qc in terms of spatial variations in the geologic and tectonic properties of the crust. Other authors have found that the frequency exponent n might be larger in active tectonic areas and smaller in more stable regions. In the northern region of the Pacific coast we obtain a value of n = 0.52 (±0.011), which might indicate a lower level of tectonic activity when compared with n = 0.85 (±0.015) and 0.83 (±0.031), respectively, for the central and southern sub-regions along the Pacific coast. The latter two sub-regions are located closer to the active area near the Cocos ridge. We obtain the frequency exponent n = 0.72 (±0.052) along a major shear zone in central Costa Rica characterized by high volcanic activity and large geologic complexity. Values of n along the Panamean border are 0.62 (±0.029) in the north and 0.86 (±0.009) and 0.83 (±0.031) in two regions adjacent to the subduction zone and the Cocos Ridge, respectively.

    Notes: A filtering technique is proposed for on-line estimation of the temperature, monomer conversion, initiator conversion, and the entire molecular weight distribution in a batch methyl methacrylate polymerization reactor. The technique uses a detailed polymerization model combined with on-line measurements of conversion, temperature, and the molecular weight distribution, taken at different discrete time intervals. The polymerization model includes a chain-length-dependent termination rate constant which allows the prediction of the molecular weight distribution for common free-radical polymerization conditions. Comparisons between modeling and experimental results show that the polymerization model gives good predictions of the monomer conversion and the molecular weight distribution in the polymerization system. The performance of the estimation scheme is tested for cases of strong gel effect conditions leading to a bimodal molecular weight distribution, and poor initial conditions. Finally, off-line experimental data are used to test the algorithm under actual reactor operating conditions.

    Notes: In this paper, we show the synthesis of palladium(II) 4,5-phenylimidazole cyclometalated complexes. They have been characterized by IR, 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. The cyclometalated dimer compound 2 [Pd(C15H11N2)(μ-OAc)]2 and the cyclometalated monomer compound 5 [PdBr(SEt2)(C15H11N2)], having OAc and Br as leaving groups, interact with DNA, modifying its secondary structure (as measured by Tm and CD), without modifying its tertiary structure (as determined by measurement of the electrophoretic mobility in agarose gels). The monomeric compound 5 seems to be the one that induces the highest alterations in DNA secondary structure since it strongly modifies the CD spectrum of the DNA. Melting data of drug-DNA complexes suggest that, at low drug concentration, the 4,5-Imd ligand intercalates between the base pairs in the DNA molecule, increasing the Tm, while at high drug concentrations the palladium(II) centers destabilize the double helix, producing a lowering in Tm values. These results indicate that complexes containing planar structures might selectively bind to DNA that is not supercoiled, and that therefore it only has a secondary structure. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: In this paper we describe the synthesis and chemical characterization of three new Pd(II)-imidazoline complexes: [PdCl2 (C6H5-CH2-C3H5N2)2] (2), [PdCl(SEt2) (C6H4-C3H5N2)] (5) and [Pd(C6H4-C3H5N2) (μ-Br)]2 (6). We have also analyzed the DNA modifications and in vitro antileukaemic activity of these compounds and of their previously reported analogs [Pd Cl2 (C6H5-C3H5N2)2] (1), [Pd (C6H4-C3H5N2) (μ-OAc)]2 (3), [Pd (C6H4-C3H5N2) (μ-Cl)]2 (4) and [Pt(C6H4-C3H5N2)(μ-Cl] (7). All these compounds modify the DNA secondary structure since they alter the melting temperature (Tm) of the DNA. Circular dichroism spectra indicated, moreover, that compounds 3, 5 and 6 induced higher modification on the double helix than compounds 1, 2 and 4. While compounds 1, 2 and 5 seem to induce slight changes in the electrophoretic mobility of the open and covalently closed circular forms of pUC8 DNA at high ri (input molar ratio of Pd or Pt to nucleotides), compounds 3, 6 and 7 do not modify at any ri the tertiary structure of the plasmid DNA. Antileukaemic tests suggest that compounds 1, 4 and 7 exhibit important cytotoxic activity since their IC50 values against HL-60 human leukaemic cells were below 10 μg ml-1. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
