    Notes: Abstract: Some basic parameters of the lytic development of phage φA7 in Streptomyces antibioticus are described. One-step growth experiments demonstrated that at 28°C φA7 has a latent period of about 60 min and an exponential growth period of about 35 min. The average burst size ranged from 70–100 plaque forming units per infected cell. At the same temperature 50% of the virions were adsorbed to germ tubes of S. antibioticus in about 10 min. This corresponds to an adsorption constant of 6.5 × 10−10 ml/min. The phage was unable to adsorb the host at other stages of the life cycle (spores or mycelium). Divalent cations are not required for φA7 stability but Ca2+ proved to be essential for adsorption and also for a later stage of the vegetative development of the phage.

    Notes: This paper provides an in-depth study of the relationship between the company's training strategy and its learning capability. On a sample of 111 Spanish companies from the chemical industry, tests a set of hypotheses which link four different training strategies with the learning capability dimensions. The results obtained from the regression analyses clearly show that ongoing training, team-based training and job rotation programmes have a positive influence on company learning capability. The present study presents evidence of how a specific human resources strategy (training strategy) influences the development of a strategic capability (organisational learning). Future studies should analyse the influence of training on performance, using organisational learning capability as a moderating variable. Additionally, the relationship between human resource management and learning should also be studied using a configurational approach. This would enable to take into account the synergic effect deriving from the joint use of complementary human resources strategies.

    Notes: Abstract IS1389, a new insertion sequence belonging to the IS3 family, has been identified in Xanthomonas campestris pv. amaranthicola. The genome of this bacterium contains at least 11 copies of the element, whereas no hybridizing sequences were detected in other Xanthomonas species [X. axonopodis, X. fragaridae, X. phaseoli, and X. (Stenotrophomonas) maltophila]. Two nearly identical copies of the element (IS1389-A and IS1389-B) were characterized. According to analysis of sequence alignments and similar structural features, IS1389 belongs to the IS407 subgroup of the IS3 family, which duplicates 4 bp of target DNA upon insertion. IS1389-A was found in the proximity of the modification gene of the XamI restriction-modification system.

    Notes: Abstract Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has been used for the quantitative determination of caffeine in several pharmaceutical products: acetyl salicylic acid, paracetamol and propyphenazone. The method is simple, rapid and selective, and allows the determination of caffeine without sample pretreatment and without separation from the matrix. Two techniques for measuring the infrared spectra of caffeine are described: transmission through pellets and diffuse reflectance from powder (DRIFT). In both methods, samples were diluted (1%) with KBr. Caffeine in pharmaceutical matrices was recovered within 5% error in pellets and 10% by DRIFT. Relative standard deviations were generally ⩽1.5% for repeated measurements on a single pellet and ⩽ 5% for measurements on different pellets. DRIFT in the vacuum mode gave rather large RSDs. The limit of detection of the pellet technique was about 0.5% caffeine in the original sample.

    Description: Heart rate variability (HRV) provides useful information about heart dynamics both under healthy and pathological conditions. Entropy measures have shown their utility to characterize these dynamics. In this paper, we assess the ability of spectral entropy (SE) and multiscale entropy (MsE) to characterize the sleep apnoea-hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) in HRV recordings from 188 subjects. Additionally, we evaluate eventual differences in these analyses depending on the gender. We found that the SE computed from the very low frequency band and the low frequency band showed ability to characterize SAHS regardless the gender; and that MsE features may be able to distinguish gender specificities. SE and MsE showed complementarity to detect SAHS, since several features from both analyses were automatically selected by the forward-selection backward-elimination algorithm. Finally, SAHS was modelled through logistic regression (LR) by using optimum sets of selected features. Modelling SAHS by genders reached significant higher performance than doing it in a jointly way. The highest diagnostic ability was reached by modelling SAHS in women. The LR classifier achieved 85.2% accuracy (Acc) and 0.951 area under the ROC curve (AROC). LR for men reached 77.6% Acc and 0.895 AROC, whereas LR for the whole set reached 72.3% Acc and 0.885 AROC. Our results show the usefulness of the SE and MsE analyses of HRV to detect SAHS, as well as suggest that, when using HRV, SAHS may be more accurately modelled if data are separated by gender.

    Description: The aim of the present study was to characterize the neural network reorganization during a cognitive task in schizophrenia (SCH) by means of wavelet entropy (WE). Previous studies suggest that the cognitive impairment in patients with SCH could be related to the disrupted integrative functions of neural circuits. Nevertheless, further characterization of this effect is needed, especially in the time-frequency domain. This characterization is sensitive to fast neuronal dynamics and their synchronization that may be an important component of distributed neuronal interactions; especially in light of the disconnection hypothesis for SCH and its electrophysiological correlates. In this work, the irregularity dynamics elicited by an auditory oddball paradigm were analyzed through synchronized-averaging (SA) and single-trial (ST) analyses. They provide complementary information on the spatial patterns involved in the neural network reorganization. Our results from 20 healthy controls and 20 SCH patients showed a WE decrease from baseline to response both in controls and SCH subjects. These changes were significantly more pronounced for healthy controls after ST analysis, mainly in central and frontopolar areas. On the other hand, SA analysis showed more widespread spatial differences than ST results. These findings suggest that the activation response is weakly phase-locked to stimulus onset in SCH and related to the default mode and salience networks. Furthermore, the less pronounced changes in WE from baseline to response for SCH patients suggest an impaired ability to reorganize neural dynamics during an oddball task.

    Description: New emerging technologies have proven their efficacy in aiding people in their rehabilitation. The tests that are usually used to evaluate usability (in general) or user satisfaction (in particular) of this technology are not specifically focused on virtual rehabilitation and patients. The objective of this contribution is to present and evaluate the USEQ (User Satisfaction Evaluation Questionnaire). The USEQ is a questionnaire that is designed to properly evaluate the satisfaction of the user (which constitutes part of usability) in virtual rehabilitation systems. Forty patients with balance disorders completed the USEQ after their first session with ABAR (Active Balance Rehabilitation), which is a virtual rehabilitation system that is designed for the rehabilitation of balance disorders. Internal consistency analysis and exploratory factor analysis were carried out to identify the factor structure of the USEQ. The six items of USEQ were significantly associated with each other, and the Cronbach alpha coefficient for the questionnaire was 0.716. In an analysis of the principal components, a one-factor solution was considered to be appropriate. The findings of the study suggest that the USEQ is a reliable questionnaire with adequate internal consistency. With regard to patient perception, the patients found the USEQ to be an easy-to-understand questionnaire with a convenient number of questions.

    Description: The El Salvador Fault Zone (ESFZ) is an active, c. 150 km long and 20 km wide, segmented, dextral strike-slip fault zone within the Central American Volcanic Arc striking N100° E. Although several studies have investigated the surface expression of the ESFZ, little is known about its structure at depth and its kinematic evolution. Structural field data and mapping suggest a phase of extension, at some stage during the evolution of the ESFZ. This phase would explain dip-slip movements on structures that are currently associated with the active, dominantly strike-slip and that do not fit with the current tectonic regime. Field observations suggest trenchward migration of the arc. Such an extension and trenchward migration of the volcanic arc could be related to slab roll-back of the Cocos Plate beneath the Chortis Block during the Miocene/Pliocene. We carried out 4D analogue model experiments to test whether an early phase of extension is required to form the present-day fault pattern in the ESFZ. Our experiments suggest that a two-phase tectonic evolution best explains the ESFZ: an early pure extensional phase linked to a segmented volcanic arc is necessary to form the main structures. This extensional phase is followed by a strike-slip dominated regime, which results in inter-segment areas with local transtension and segments with almost pure strike-slip motion. The results of our experiments combined with field data along the Central American Volcanic Arc indicate that the slab roll-back intensity beneath the Chortís Block is greater in Nicaragua and decreases westward to Guatemala.
