Notes: Conclusions We constructed an analytical model of the loading of a specimen with a fatigue crack. We also designed instruments to detect a signal proportional to the change in the compliance (stiffness) of the test specimen. An instrument system was also developed to record the kinetics of cracks during long fatigue tests. Examination of the system in preliminary tests showed it to be highly reliable, providing stable readings of the parameters being recorded. A method was devised for experimentally studying the kinetics of fatigue fracture of specimens of alloy EP718ID and a cycle of tests was conducted. It was shown that life of the specimen after the formation of a fatigue crack depends on the level of the cyclic stresses and stress concentration.

Notes: Conclusions We have constructed a unidimensional creep model which describes all characteristic stages of the process and considers cyclicity of loading. The base creep experiment can be limited to the steady-state stage and does not entail determination of a damage function. It was shown that the character of creep can be determined from the type of instantaneous strain curve. It was established in particular that only transient creep will occur for media which exhibit linear strain-hardening, all stages will be realized in media exhibiting exponential strain-hardening, and an ideally plastic medium will behave over time as a linearly viscous medium. Creep is accelerated in media in which a cyclic load reduces the ductility indices. If strain-hardening occurs, then a cyclic load retards creep.

Notes: Conclusion In order to construct models of the limiting state in asymmetric cyclic loading, it is best to use the representation of a unique limit curve that is invariant to the time to failure and type of stress state. Isotropic metallic materials were used as an example to show that such a curve does exist and is described satisfactorily by an exponential cosine function. The models constructed above were used to calculate the limiting state for several steels and alloys acted upon by the combinations of cyclic bending and cyclic torsion, static bending and cyclic torsion, and static torsion and cyclic bending. Results were also calculated for materials with stress raisers. The calculated data were compared with experimental findings and were shown to agree satisfactorily with the latter.

Notes: Conclusion We have constructed a model of the growth of a fatigue crack in a thin, isotropic plate, taking the two-stage evolution of the fracture process into account. The model is based on concepts of the mechanics of a continuous defective state and on a schematic representation of the neighborhood of the tip of a fatigue crack as a plastic zone moving together with the crack. The model takes into account the influence of the cumulative defective state (damage level) along the crack propagation front on the speed of propagation. We have formulated solutions for the cases when the length of the plastic zone is constant and when it varies during the growth of fatigue cracks. We have established the fact that the plastic zone at the crack tip tends to disrupt the stability of the motion immediately at the time of inception or opening of the crack. The speed of crack propagation decreases as the plastic zone grows in size. We have shown that the problem of estimating the kinetics of fatigue cracks in thin plates can be reduced to calculating the growth rate as a function of the peak-to-peak amplitude of the stress intensity factor while preserving the structure of the governing equations of the model. We have also shown that the concept of a plastic zone of constant length induces a power-law dependence of the crack rate on ΔK, the power exponent varying from 2 to 10–12. The Dugdale model gives a square-law dependence of the crack rate on ΔK, which for the most part is applicable to plastic materials.
