    Description: This dataset comprises 1785 apatite fission track (AFT) analyses from mostly Archaean-Palaeozoic igneous rocks, or their metamorphic equivalent, from across the Australian continent. Information provided in this dataset include sample locations, lithologies, AFT age determinations, and mean confined track length measurements. These analyses were first described in Kohn et al. (2002) and Gleadow et al. (2002), and provide critical insights into the low-temperature tectono-thermal evolution of the Australian upper crust over the last 300 million years.

    Description: Fission track ages of individual crystals of detrital apatite and sphene separated from early Eocene and Paleocene sandstones at Site 555 indicate the contribution of detritus from source rocks of at least three distinct age groups. A major group of Tertiary (56 ± 3 m.y.) apatite ages is compatible with either contemporaneous or near contemporaneous volcanism or rapid unroofing of high level intrusives like those identified previously on Rockall Island (Jones et al., 1972) and Greenland (Gleadow and Brooks, 1979). Cretaceous (100 ± 20 m.y.) apatite ages are consistent with known high level microgabbroic intrusives on Helen's Reef (Roberts et al., 1974). Such apatite ages could also be derived from basement rocks of very ancient terrains, especially around rifted continental margins where low level heating or uplift has affected the fission track ages of apatites (Gleadow, 1978). Minor contributions were also identified from a terrain with apatite ages around 150 to 200 m.y. Similar ages are known from granitic and metamorphic rocks in Greenland (Gleadow, 1978; Gleadow and Brooks, 1979). From experience elsewhere in the North Atlantic Craton (Gleadow, 1978), such apatite ages are also likely in the basement rocks of Rockall, but direct fission track results are lacking. With the identification of at least two nonmetamorphic sources, these data enable a refinement of the source of apatite suggested by heavy mineral studies (Morton, this volume). Two distinct groups of sphene ages of around 60 and 1,380 m.y. are also consistent with sources either on the Rockall Bank (Roberts et al., 1973) or in Greenland (Gleadow, 1978). Apatites from around 900 m depth have a combined age very close to the age of deposition, and they have track length distributions indicating that present temperatures in the hole are at, or close to, the maximum experienced since deposition.

    Notes: Abstract Fission-track ages in apatite are generally accepted as giving a measure of the time over which a sample has been exposed to temperatures below approximately 100° C. A compilation of the lengths of confined fission tracks in a wide variety of apatites from different geological environments has shown that the distribution of confined track lengths can provide unique thermal history information in the temperature range below about 150° C over times of the order of 106 to 109 years. The distribution of confined lengths of freshly produced induced tracks is characterised by a narrow, symmetrical distribution with a mean length of around 16.3 μm and a standard deviation of the distribution of approximately 0.9 μm. In volcanic and related rocks which have cooled very rapidly, and never been reheated above about 50° C, the distribution is also narrow and symmetric, but with a shorter mean of 14.5 to 15 μm, and a standard deviation of the distribution of approximately 1.0 μm. In granitic basement terrains which are thought never to have been significantly disturbed thermally, since their original post-emplacement cooling, the distribution becomes negatively skewed, with a mean around 12 or 13 μm and a standard deviation between 1.2 and 2 μm.This distribution is thought to characterise slow continuous cooling from temperatures in excess of 120° C, to ambient surface temperatures. More complex thermal histories produce correspondingly complex distributions of confined tracks. The continuous production of tracks through time, coupled with the fact that the length of each track shrinks to a value characteristic of the maximum temperature it has experienced, gives a final length distribution which directly reflects the nature of the variation of temperature with time. Most distinctive of the myriad possible forms of the final distribution are the bimodal distributions, which give clear evidence of a two-stage history, including high and low temperature phases. The study of confined length distributions therefore offers invaluable evidence on the meaning of any fission-track age, and bears the potential of providing rigorous constraints on thermal history in the temperature regime below about 150° C. The results of this study strongly suggest that any apatite fission-track age determination should be supported by a confined track length distribution.

    Notes: Abstract Fission track ages have been measured for 12 sphenes, 18 zircons and 25 apatites separated largely from Lower Tertiary magmatic rocks of East Greenland, with a few examples from Caledonian rocks. The sphene and zircon ages of Caledonian rocks agree with other radiometric ages but apatite is strongly discordant indicating that these rocks cooled very slowly over a 200 m.y. period. It was not until the Permian/Lower Jurassic that they finally cooled below 100 ° C, possibly as a consequence of uplift and erosion at this time in connection with extensive rifting. No evidence of a Tertiary imprint has been found in these rocks. Layered gabbros, such as Skaergaard, were emplaced at about the same time (ca. 54 m.y.) as the latest plateau basalts. Some evidence of syenitic activity from this period occurs in the Angmagssalik area ca. 400 km to the south but the syenites of Kangerdlugssuaq cluster around 50 m.y. The Gardiner ultramafic alkaline complex and some of the offshore gabbros apparently also were emplaced at about 50 m.y. Late dykes in the Kangerdlugssuaq area were emplaced over a considerable time span (43-34 m.y.) in keeping with their variable petrographic character, and the Kialineq centre was formed at 36.2±0.4 m.y. Intrusions of the Masters Vig area differ in age. Kap Simpson and Kap Parry to the northeast were emplaced around 40 m.y. whereas the Werner Bjerge complex is the youngest igneous activity so far identified in Greenland with an age of 30.3±1.3 m.y. Many apatites give strongly discordant ages of about 36 m.y. and these are concentrated in the area of a major domal uplift centred on Kangerdlugssuaq. The uplift is older than these ages but on field evidence post-dates the basalts. It probably formed in conjunction with alkaline magmatism at ca. 50 m.y. Cooling below ca. 200 ° was slow for these intrusions and was probably controlled by a number of factors including erosion of the dome, high heat flow caused by continuing dyke injection and regional plateau uplift. The last is believed to have taken place about 35 m.y. ago at the time of emplacement of the Kialineq plutons and last dykes. Renewed rapid erosion and declining heat flow at this time led to rapid cooling of the rocks now at the surface to below 100 °.
