Notes: An overall view of the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade (F.T.U.) Thomson scattering system is illustrated and particular attention is paid to the optical and spectral analysis equipments. The system includes the laser source, the collection optics, a set of filter polychromators, all the electronic equipments necessary to collect the data relevant to the scattered light and to send them to the F.T.U. data acquisition system. The features of this system can be summarized as follows: rejection to laser wavelength: ≥107, laser energy: ≥5 J, overall optical efficiency: ≥40%, and capability of multiple time and space measurements on the Thomson scattered light.

Notes: The metasedimentary sequence of the Deep Freeze Range (northern Victoria Land, Antarctica) experienced high-T/low-F metamorphism during the Cambro-Ordovician Ross orogeny. The reaction Bt + Sil + Qtz = Grt + Crd + Kfs + melt was responsible for the formation of migmatites. Peak conditions were c. 700–750° C, c. 3.5–5 kbar and xH2Oc. 0.5).Distribution of fluid inclusions is controlled by host rock type: (1) CO2-H2O fluid inclusions occur only in graphite-free leucosomes; (2) CO2–CH4± H2O fluid inclusions are the most common type in leucosomes, and in graphite-bearing mesosomes and gneiss; and (3) CO2–N2–CH4 fluid inclusions are observed only in the gneiss, and subordinately in mesosomes.CO2–H2O mixtures (41% CO2, 58% H2O, 1% Nad mol.%) are interpreted as remnants of a synmig-matization fluid; their composition and density are compatible P–T–aH2O conditions of migmatization (c. 750° C, c. 4 kbar, xH2Oc. 0.5). CO2-H2O fluid in graphite-free leucosomes cannot originate via partial melting of graphite-bearing mesosomes in a closed system; this would have produced a mixed CO2–CH4 fluid in the leucosomes by a reaction such as Bt + Sil + Qtz + C ± H2O = Grt + Crd + Kfs + L + CO2+ CH4. We conclude that an externally derived oxidizing CO2-H2O fluid was present in the middle crust and initiated anatexis.High-density CO2-rich fluid with traces of CH4 characterizes the retrograde evolution of these rocks at high temperatures and support isobaric cooling (P–T anticlockwise path). In unmigmatized gneiss, mixed CO2–N2–CH4 fluid yields isochores compatible with peak metamorphic conditions (c. 700–750° C, c. 4–4.5 kbar); they may represent a peak metamorphic fluid that pre-dated the migmatization.

Notes: The distribution and residue depletion of thiamphenicol (TAP) were studied in seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) and seabream (Sparus aurata L.) reared in field conditions at temperatures of 20–28 °C. The drug was administered orally as medicated feed at the rate of 40 mg active ingredient (a.i.) kg−1 of biomass once a day for 5 days. Samples of muscle, liver, skin and vertebrae from 10 fishes were collected on the 2nd and 4th day of treatment and 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 and 30 days after the last administration of the drug, and were stored at −20 °C. Quantitative analysis of TAP was performed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after liquid-liquid extraction; the quantification limits of the HPLC method were 0.02 μg/g for muscle, and 0.05–0.10 μg/g for the other tissues. In seabass, TAP concentrations during treatment were higher in liver and muscle than in skin and vertebrae, and rapidly decreased after the end of medication. Three days after treatment ceased, TAP was still detectable in liver (0.41 ± 0.23 μg/g), vertebrae (0.09 ± 0.03 μg/g) and in three out of 10 samples of muscle (0.03 μg/g), but not in skin. All tissues were below the limits of quantification on the 5th day of withdrawal. In seabream the highest TAP concentrations during treatment were measured in liver and skin, and their reduction after the end of medication was as rapid as that of seabass: on the 3rd day after treatment ceased traces were found in only four out of 10 samples of muscle (0.03 ± 0.00 μg/g) and vertebrae (0.08 ± 0.02 μg/g).

Notes: Streptococcosis caused by Lactococcus garvieae is currently the bacterial disease causing the highest mortality in Italian rainbow trout farming. Since 1991, when it first appeared, the disease continued to spread, mainly in the northern regions. In the worst cases, mortality reached nearly 50%; the outbreaks occur during the summer, when the water temperatures are higher than 15°C. Chances to effectively control the disease are very limited because of the lack of useful and legally approved drugs. Fish suffering the disease are usually close to market size and farmers are unable to treat the disease unless they risk considerably delaying marketing in order to comply with withdrawal periods. Therefore, it becomes increasingly important to develop vaccination programmes. In the present study, two normally reared groups of rainbow trout were vaccinated by intraperitoneal injection with a formalin-killed vaccine. The first trial was conducted between May and October with fish weighing at mean 1.360 kg. The mortality in the vaccinated group was reduced to 16.7% compared with 40.4% in the control group. Moreover, the unvaccinated group had to be treated five times with antibiotics. The second trial was carried out between April and September with fish weighing on average 6.370 kg. A certain degree of resistance against the disease was noticed in the vaccinated group (mortality 18.6%).

Notes: During in vitro cultivation of bacteria, the pathogenetic factors may change in amount and quality. Knowledge of this variability is important in vaccine production. The pathogenic variability of Pasteurella piscicida broth culture (BC), extracellular products (ECPs) and whole cells (WC) was investigated in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) 2–3 g wet weight, inoculated intra-peritoneally. Ten Pasteurella piscicida field strains isolated from fish affected by different outbreaks which occurred in Italian fish farms were used. When BC and ECPs were intraperitoneally injected, no variability in virulence was observed between strains of different geographical origin and no attenuation was registered between strains of different in vitro passages. The electrophoretic (SDS-PAGE) analysis of ECP showed evidence of only quantitative differences inside the panel of strains and between the same strain collected at different in vitro cultivation times. ECPs produced from a BC incubated for 18–60 h were highly toxic. This ability was heat labile and not active when ECPs were administered by immersion. No toxic capacity was observed with WC where infection was greater with a 18–60 h incubation broth culture. Results seems to indicate that the toxic activity of Pasteurella piscicida is mostly due to ECP and not bounded to the cell.

Notes: Abstract. Vibriosis is a significant problem in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, culture in fresh water in north-eastern Italy. Furunculosis is the main cause of disease in brown trout, Salmo trutta L., and brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill). Spontaneous outbreaks over the period 1975–1978 are described together with relevant husbandry and environmental parameters associated with them. Biological, chemical and physiological characteristics of 40 bacterial strains isolated from outbreaks are described.

Notes: Abstract Interleaved phyllosilicate grains (IPG) of various compositions are widespread in low-grade Verrucano metasediments of the northern Apennines (Italy). They are ellipsoidal or barrel shaped, up to 300–400 μm long and they are often kinked and folded; phyllosilicate packets occur as continuous lamellae or as wedge-shaped layers terminating inside the grain. Using electron microscopy techniques (SEM, TEM) six types of IPG have been distinguished on the basis of their mineralogical composition: (1) Chl+Ms ± Kln; (2) Chl+ Ms+Pg ± Kln; (3) Ms+Prl ± Pg; (4) Ms+Prl+Su; (5) Ms+Prl+Chl+Su; (6) Su+Ms. Types (1) and (2) are mainly composed of chlorite, with Ms and Pg as minor phases; Kln grows on Ms in highly weathered samples. Types (3), (4), (5), and (6) are composed of muscovite, with intergrown Prl, Chl, Su and new-formed muscovite. The IPG show all kinds of contacts: from coherent grain boundaries with parallel basal planes and along-layer transitions to low- and high-angle grain boundaries. The IPG formed on pristine minerals such as chlorite and muscovite. The transformations took place during the prograde and retrograde metamorphic path of the rocks: they were facilitated by deformation and they occurred in equilibrium with a fluid phase, which allowed cation diffusion. Prograde reactions [Chl = Ms (or Pg); Ms = Prl; Ms = Chl] involve dehydration and sometimes a decrease in volume, whereas retrograde reactions (Ms = Kln; Ms = Su) involve hydration and an increase in volume. These transformations do not simply occur through an interchange of cations, but often involve deep structural changes: transitions from one phyllosilicate to another generally proceed through dissolution-recrystallization reactions. In conclusion, Verrucano IPG represent microstructural sites which have not completely equilibrated with the whole rock and whose mineral assemblage depends on the original composition of the microstructural sites.
