    SPATIAL VARIATIONS OF WATER LOSS DURING DROUGH A CASE STUDY (2001)

    Notes: : A regional water conservation system for drought management involves many uncertain factors. Water received from precipitation may stay on the ground surface, evaporate back into the atmosphere, or infiltrate into the ground. Reliable estimates of the amount of evapotranspiration and infiltration are not available for a large basin, especially during periods of drought. By applying a geographic information system, this study develops procedures to investigate spatial variations of unavailable water for given levels of drought severity. Levels of drought severity are defined by truncated values of monthly precipitation and daily streamflow to reflect levels of water availability. The greater the truncation level, the lower the precipitation or streamflow. Truncation levels of monthly precipitation are recorded in depth of water while those of daily streamflow are converted into monthly equivalent water depths. Truncation levels of precipitation and streamflow treated as regionalized variables are spatially interpolated by the unbiased minimum variance estimation. The interpolated results are vector values of precipitation and streamflow at a grid of points covering the studied basin. They are then converted into raster-based values and expressed graphically. The image subtraction operation is used to subtract the image of streamflow from that of precipitation at their corresponding level of drought severity. It is done on a cell-by-cell basis resulting in new attribute values to form the spatial image representing a spatial distribution of potential water loss at a given level of drought severity.

    Notes: Despite anecdotal evidence of the performance implications of just-in-time (JIT) implementation, little empirical research has been conducted. Examines total system JIT's empirical relationships with a variety of performance outcomes. Total system JIT encompasses JIT purchasing, JIT production, and JIT selling. In a mail survey of 200 logistics executives, total system JIT was found to be: inversely related to weeks of inventory (inclusive of inbound, in-process, and outbound); inversely related to the number of layers in various functional areas (e.g. marketing); and positively related to three different indicators of financial performance (ROI, profits, and ROS). Results, managerial implications, and further research are discussed.

The results show banks segmented the overall market on demographics such as age (during the 1880s), gender (as early as the 1830s), and national origin (as early as the 1850s), on user status in terms of current, potential, and past customers (around 1900), and on geography (as early as the 1890s). The efforts of bankers are compared to a historical periodization of segmentation, and the conclusion is drawn that banks were marketing themselves well before 1930.

    Notes: Faced with environmental volatility and increased competition, firms are turning to supply chain management and associated time-based initiatives to develop sustainable competitive advantages. This research examines just-in-time (JIT) as one such logistics strategy. While prior research has focused on internal and upstream JIT (i.e., production and purchasing), the present research examines the extent to which exchange with downstream customers is just-in-time oriented. The results of the research show that JIT with customers is associated with organizational designs that are more decentralized, integrated, and formalized and with better performance in terms of less finished goods inventory and higher overall financial performance. The analysis controls for firm size, production technology, and tenure of the senior logistics executive and shows that the effects of JIT with customers on organizational structure and performance are, with a limited number of exceptions, relatively robust.

    Notes: The research empirically investigates the relationships among supply chain B2B e-commerce, environmental uncertainty, organizational structure, and time-based delivery performance. The results show that B2B e-commerce enhances time-based delivery performance. The process turbulence component of environmental uncertainty has direct influence on B2B e-commerce implementation and an indirect influence as mediated by the integration dimension of organizational structure. Process turbulence thus indirectly has a positive effect on time-based delivery performance, whereas demand unpredictability has no effect. Integration within the firm associates with B2B e-commerce implementation, while decentralization and formal control are unrelated to B2B e-commerce.

    Notes: The research proposes a theory that organizational design mediates completely the effect of context on quality management. The results show that the greater the level of the organizational design variables (formalization, technocratic specialization, and strategic decentralization), the greater the level of quality management. The context variables of size, production technology (which varies from custom to flow production types), and product dynamism predict organizational design to varying extents. Statistical analysis shows that the indirect effect of size, production technology, and product dynamism on quality management are significant and positive. Direct effects of context on quality management were tested and found not to be significant. The conclusion is drawn that organizational design transmits the effect of context to quality management.

    Notes: This research challenges the idea of an unconditional and positive influence of knowledge on performance without regard to environmental uncertainty. We focus on applied product quality knowledge spanning the supply chain (i.e. supplier, internal, and customer quality sources are considered). A survey of 208 manufacturing firms examined the moderating influence of product churning (uncertainty) and demand unpredictability on the association between applied product quality knowledge and firm performance. We also controlled for firm size and production technology. Firms that can determine a fit between their product quality knowledge application and the types of environmental uncertainty they face will perform better in terms of market and financial performance indicators.
