Notizen: In order to calibrate a novel type of time-of-flight mass spectrometer to be flown in the solar wind, we have continued our investigation of the charge exchange of low energy ions passing thin carbon foils. We analyzed elements with widely different chemical properties: Ions of B, C, F, Ne, Na, Si, S, Cl, Ar, K, and Fe in the energy range 0.5–3 keV/u were passed through carbon foils with thicknesses between 1.1 and 10 μg/cm2, and their charge state distributions and residual energies were determined. It was found that (1) the charge state distribution behind the foil is independent of the charge of the incident projectile, (2) isotopes show the same charge exchange properties at equal velocities as we have found previously, (3) at the lowest energies the charge state distribution is no longer a function of the residual energy alone but depends on both residual energy and foil thickness, (4) probable differences in chemical properties between the front and back surfaces of the foil have no detectable influence on the charge exchange properties, and (5) strong electron shell effects manifest themselves when results for different elements are compared.

Notizen: In order to calibrate a time-of-flight mass spectrometer which is to be flown in the solar wind we have investigated the charge exchange properties of low-energy ions in thin carbon foils. We have used incident ions of He, C, N, O, Ne, and Ar with energies in the range 0.5–2 keV/nucleon to measure charge-state distribution, residual energy, and angular distribution after transmission through thin (1–6 μg/cm2 ) carbon foils. Within such foils an equilibrium between ionization and recombination of the projectile is rapidly established and, consequently, the charge state of the emerging particle depends essentially on its residual velocity. A comparison of the charge exchange properties of 22 Ne with 2 0 Ne demonstrates that indeed the velocity (and not the energy) of the emerging particle determines its final charge. Comparing properties of different elements one observes an indication of an electron shell effect. Predictions for the energy loss of ions within the carbon foils made with the trim code [J. F. Ziegler, computer code trim-88 (IBM-Research, Yorktown, NY, 1987)] are in good agreement with the experimental results presented in this paper.

Notizen: Extensive multiconfiguration ab initio calculations on the ground state and electronic excited states of the C4H radical (butadiynyl) are presented. Using multiconfiguration self-consistent field (MCSCF) structure optimization the estimated complete basis set limit for the excitation energy to the first excited state was calculated to be 0.030 eV employing second-order multireference perturbation theory and 0.035 eV using multireference configuration interaction. States up to 8 eV above the 12Σ+ ground state were investigated. Harmonic vibrational frequencies for the ground state and the four lowest 2Π states are reported at the MCSCF level of theory. The 32Σ+ state is the first state above the C–H bond dissociation threshold at 5.71 eV with a large transition dipole moment, so the 32Σ+←12Σ+ transition could lead to dissociation of the C–H bond. The estimated maximum rate for photodissociation is 1.4–3.1×10−6 s−1 at 1 astronomical unit. Thus C4H has a significantly long lifetime in which to be detectable in large parts of cometary comas. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract The Pleistocene, and possibly also other, older glaciations, are believed to have resulted from a combination of terrestrial and astronomical factors. Preceding glaciation, orogenesis and uplift increased the Earth's albedo and decreased temperature. Lowering of temperature below a certain threshold value permitted the astronomical cause to become operative. While smaller glaciations may have been largely or entirely patterned by the astronomical cause or causes, terrestrial factors had an important effect in determining the course of the larger glaciations. Two time-delay factors are believed to have been responsible for the oscillatory pattern of glaciation: these are plastic iceflow, and crustal warping. Summer insolation variation in the high latitudes is believed to be a more likely astronomical cause than variation of solar radiation.

Notizen: Abstract Assuming a stationary, radial, spherically symmetric solar wind and a radial magnetic field direction in the vicinity of the sun, an equation of motion for ions heavier than protons in the solar wind is derived. The general properties of this equation are discussed and the results of numerical integrations are given. These results are based on the assumption of maxwellian velocity distribution functions for electrons, protons and ions, but the effects of first order deviations from such distributions are also presented and discussed. It is shown that dynamical friction, i.e. momentum transfer from protons to heavier ions accounts for the observed fact that heavier ions - if accelerated at all - normally reach the same velocity as the protons in the solar wind. Because of the non-linear relation between dynamical friction and proton-ion velocity difference a minimum proton flux is required to carry a certain ion species in the solar wind. Formulae comparing the minimum fluxes for different ions are given. It is shown that elements up to and beyond iron will be carried along in the solar wind as long as helium is carried along. Substantial isotopic fractionation is possible, in particular in the case of helium. The effects of ion motion and escape on abundances in the corona and in the outer convective zone of the sun are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Radial profiles of the light nuclei (A ≤15) are calculated in the non-mixing Sun, taking into account the changes of solar structure with time. The results are discussed in relation to models of solar mixing and compared with abundance determinations at the solar surface or in the solar wind. B cannot be depleted in the outer convective zone without producing a large increase in the He3/He4 ratio. A decrease in He3/He4 would be accompanied by changes in C13/C12 and N15/N14 of a magnitude which is not observed. It is shown that boron could be depleted in the pre-main sequence period of the Sun, if mixing was on a time-scale of 106 yr. The simultaneous small increase in He3/He4 does not contradict observation. However, Be would be depleted more strongly than B. A He3/He4 decrease is always accompanied by large changes in N15/N14 and C13/C12. Since such changes are not observed, it is concluded that the He3/He4 ratio in the outer convective zone is a reliable upper limit for (He3 + D)/He4 in the solar nebula. Thus the D/H ratio in the protosolar material was much lower than it is in sea water or in carbonaceous chondrites.
