Description: The Spherical Cap Harmonic Analysis (SCHA) is a regional modeling technique based on appropriate functions which are solutions of Laplace’s equation over a constrained, cap-like region of the Earth. The concept was introduced in 1985 in the context of geomagnetism as a local or regional extension of the classic global spherical harmonic analysis. Starting from the basic principles in which the analysis method is founded, this paper describes the latest applications for the modeling of the main magnetic field and its secular variation. Although examples of applications over small areas will be given, it will be shown that, in general, the bigger the region the more appropriate the technique. Therefore, this paper focuses on the results and perspectives over continental areas, like Antarctica or Europe. The possible application to the derivation of isogonic charts for navigational purposes with suitable time predictions will be emphasized. At the same time, the limitations of the method will be examined. Although recent revisions of the technique seem to solve some of the problems, our present research focuses on the quest for solutions to the still unanswered questions.

Description: The experience acquired from more than ten years of operation of an Antarctic geomagnetic observatory is described along with the development of data transmission facilities. The observatory was deployed at the Spanish Antarctic Station in 1996. The main instrument was an Overhauser magnetometer deployed in dual axis Helmholtz coils, a δD/δI configuration. The site is only manned during the summer, with the magnetometer left recording throughout the rest of the year. During the 2007-2008 survey the observatory instrumentation has been upgraded with a DMI suspended triaxial fluxgate magnetometer, new sampling hardware and data logging software. Both sampling and timing are carried out under the control of a PIC based microcontroller and GPS receiver. Data presentation, transmission and archiving are performed under the control of a low power embedded PC. For real time access to the data two options have been provided and rigorously tested during the last 10 years: METEOSAT and GOES Data Collection Systems, and recently, a high frequency (HF) digital radio-link, using ionospheric propagation between Antarctica and Spain, has been developed. This latest transmission system is being continuously upgraded, and it would be possible to extend its application to other remote stations. Measurements have been made during the last four years in order to determine the channel characteristics and its variability, mainly the multipath and Doppler spread and the link availability for a given SNR in the receiver. These measurements are being used to design the physical layer of a radiomodem intended to maximize the link capacity keeping the emitted power low.

Description: Spherical Cap Harmonic Analysis has been applied to obtain a reference model of geomagnetic secular change for Antarctica valid for the last forty years. In this paper, we use the latest available observatory data to update this model and to compare it with the 8th generation IGRF. In addition, the selected set of total field values used for the generation of the Oersted Initial Field Model have been employed together with observatory data to develop the first complete Antarctic Reference Model (ARM). This model improves the fit to the secular variation deduced from observatory data by about 60% relative to IGRF, and the fit to observatory and satellite field data by 8%. The model allows merging data sets taken at different altitudes and epochs in Antarctica, where significant temporal geomagnetic variations occur.

Description: Use of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field Model (IGRF) to construct magnetic anomaly maps can lead to problems with the accurate determination of magnetic anomalies that are readily apparent at the edges of local or regional magnetic surveys carried out at different epochs. The situation is severe in areas like Antarctica, where ionospheric activity is intense and only a few ground magnetic observatories exist. This makes it difficult to properly separate from ionospheric variations the secular variation of the core magnetic field. We examine two alternatives to the piecewise-continuous IGRF core magnetic field in Antarctica for the last 45 years: the present global Comprehensive Model (CM4) and the new version of the Antarctic Reference Model (ARM). Both these continuous models are better at representing the secular variation in Antarctica than the IGRF. Therefore, their use is recommended for defining the crustal magnetic field of Antarctica (e.g. the next generation of the Antarctic Digital Magnetic Anomaly Map).

Description: This paper presents the situation of the geomagnetic measurements over Albanian territory, distinguishing the campaigns of 1942.0, 1961.0, 1990.4, 1994.75 and 2004.7 epochs. The results of the latest model of the geomagnetic field for Southern Italy and Albanian territory are therefore shown. This model was created using SCHA (Spherical Cap Harmonic Analysis) technique, applied on all ground data from three different epochs (1990.4, 1994.5 and 2003.7) and a selected dataset from Oersted satellite mission. The ground data were confined in a small Spherical Cap that we expect to enlarge with ground data from adjoining countries in order to compose an accurate Balkan Geomagnetic Reference Field Model.

Description: Here we present a revised geomagnetic reference model for the region comprising Albanian territory, south-east part of Italian Peninsula and Ionian Sea from 1990 to 2010 with prediction to 2012. This study is based on the datasets of magnetic measurements taken during different campaigns in Albania and Italy in the time of concern, together with a total intensity data set from the Ørsted and CHAMP satellite missions. The model is designed to represent the Cartesian components, X, Y, Z and the total intensity F of the main geomagnetic field (and its secular variation) for the period of interest. To develop the model, we applied a Spherical Cap Harmonic Analysis (SCHA) of the geomagnetic potential over a 16° cap with most of the observations concentrated in the central 4° half-angle. The use of a larger cap than that containing the data was made to reduce the typical problems in SV modelling over small regions. Also a new technique, called ``Radially Simplified Spherical Cap Harmonic Analysis" (RS-SCHA), was developed to improve the model especially in the radial variation of the geomagnetic field components. Both these models provide an optimal representation of the geomagnetic field in the considered region compared with the International Geomagnetic Reference Field model (IGRF-11) and can be used as reference models to reduce magnetic surveys undertaken in the area during the time of validity of the model, or to extrapolate the field till 2012.

Description: Performing good quality magnetic observations is not an easy task; making them in the extreme marine environment is even much more challenging. The European funded GEOSTAR project succeeded in reaching this difficult goal. After the shallow seawater test experiment performed in the Adriatic sea in 1998, the main aims of the GEOSTAR project were achieved two years later during the six-month deep seafloor mission in the Tyrrhenian sea at around 2 km depth. Details and results about the shallow seawater mission in the Adriatic sea were published in previous articles; this paper is concerned with the deep seafloor mission in the Tyrrhenian sea close to Ustica Island and presents some results related to the geomagnetic recordings.

Description: Taking advantage of the measurements undertaken during the Albanian and Italian magnetic repeat station networks since 1990, as well as of a selected set of Ørsted satellite total field measurements, a magnetic reference model for the region comprising the Albanian territory, the southern part of the Italian Peninsula, and the Ionian Sea is presented. The model, designed to model the components of the main geomagnetic field for epochs between 1990 and 2005, has been developed by means of spherical cap harmonic analysis applied to a cap of semiangle 8°, larger than that investigated to take into account the appropriate spatial wavelength content of the main geomagnetic field over the region. The goodness of the fit to the real data suggests that the model can be used as a reference model to reduce magnetic surveys developed in the area during the time of validity of the model.
