    Notes: A study was made on the inheritance of seed weight of tomato, and on the effect of seed weight on growth of tomato plants. Use was made of 15 parental genotypes and 105 F1s produced by diallel crossing (F1-seeds). From combining ability analysis of variance carried out for weight of F1-seeds it appeared that the weight of seeds harvested from tomato plants was mainly determined by the maternal genotype and largely independent of the genotype of the male parent. A combining ability analysis of variance for weight of seeds produced by seilfing F1's (F2-seeds) showed, however, that female and male parents contributed equally to the inheritance of seed weight and that the inheritance of seed weight is determined mainly by chromosomal additiveiy acting factors, but that also non-additive gene action occurred.Genotypes with large seeds produced heavier seedlings than genotypes with small seeds, In later growth stages, the correlation between seed weight and plant weight became smaller, presumably, due to a lower relative growth rate of the seedlings from large seeds. For this reason, it is doubtful whether breeding of large seeded tomato cultivars opens up prospects of improving growth and yield of tomato plants.

    Notes: Research has been carried out on the inheritance of corolla size, number of stamens and percentage of plants with petaloid stamens (double flower) in evergreen azaleas (Rhododendron Subsect. obtusa). For this purpose two incomplete diallel crosses were used. The first one included seven species and one cultivar and the second diallel 13 cultivars. In both diallels for all three characters the GCA mean squares were high. Also, the positive correlation between the parental values and the GCA estimates for flower size and number of stamens indicates that the expression of these characters is mainly determined by additive gene action. A negative correlation was found between GCA estimates for die n number of stamens and the percentage of plants with petaloid stamens. When breeding azaleas with large double flowers, parents can be directly selected on the basis of these characters since additive genetic variance dominates. As no genetic correlations were found between corolla size and number of stamens (percentage of plants with petaloid stamens) the breeding will not be hampered by unfavourable linkage of genes for these characters.

    Notes: Summary The inheritance of parthenocarpy in the pickling cucumber has been studied with progenies of an incomplete diallel cross between lines with different degrees of parthenocarpy and with two sets of F1, F2 and B1 of crosses between parthenocarpic and non-parthenocarpic lines. The inheritance of parthenocarpy could be explained by three independent, isomeric major genes with additive action, together with a non-allelic interaction of the homozygote-heterozygote type. Indications have been found for linkages between genes that govern parthenocarpy, femaleness and the spined/hairy fruit character. Consequences for breeding parthenocarpic varieties are discussed.

    Notes: Summary In this and in an earlier paper formulas are given for analysing genetic variation in general (connected) diallel cross designs, including incomplete and unbalanced designs. Also North Carolina II (NC II) designs are considered. In this paper the procedures are illustrated by the example of an irregular incomplete diallel cross. The use of the general formulas for the random model analysis, given by Keuls & Garretsen (1977), is illustrated by this example. General formulas for the fixed model analysis are given in this paper. A fixed model analysis of variance is illustrated, providing F-tests and estimating reduced parameters with their variances, with Bonferroni-t-tests (against zero) of estimated parameters.

    Notes: Summary Fusarium bulb rot is a serious tulip disease. Breeding for resistance may contribute considerably to a solution of the problem. It has been demonstrated that juvenile and adult bulbs of the same cultivars in Fusarium contaminated soil showed good agreement in degree of resistance. From an incomplete diallel cross of these cultivars second-year bulblets of 62 progenies were planted in both contaminated and non-contaminated soil. The percentages of non-diseased bulbs harvested provided a criterion for resistance. The analysis of combining ability for the degree of resistance revealed that both the mean square of GCA and that of SCA were significant. The relative magnitudes of the GCA and SCA mean squares suggest that resistance is governed primarily by additive gene action. The GCA of individual parents could be estimated and tested. In general it corresponded with their phenotypic behaviour.

    Notes: Summary In three experiments the growth of 16 genotypes of tomato was examined. The plants were raised in growth rooms at a day temperature of 19°C and night temperatures of 14, 10 or 6°C respectively under a light intensity of 24 Wm-2 visible radiation and a daylength of 8 hours. The results were analysed by a multivariate analysis of variance. Relative growth rate (RGR), leaf area ratio (LAR), specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf weight ratio (LWR) decreased with time. The change in net assimilation rate (NAR) was small. The decrease in RGR was mainly due to the decrease in LAR. RGR, LAR and SLA were lower and LWR slightly higher at lower night temperatures. NAR was hardly affected. The lower RGR at lower night temperatures was mainly due to a lower SLA. Significant differences between genotypes were found in total dry weight, NAR, LAR, SLA and LWR, but hardly in RGR. Significant genotype × temperature interactions occurred. LAR and SLA were positively, NAR and LAR, and NAR and SLA negatively correlated.

    Notes: Summary Among cultivars of tomato important heritable differences for seed size occur. The inheritance of this character appears to be determined predominantly by maternal factors. Seed size is also influenced by environmental factors, such as mode of pollination and competition between fruits within and between trusses. Large seeds germinate earlier than small seeds, may produce larger cotyledons and more vigorous and earlier yielding plants, but generally the effect of seed size on growth is relatively small or absent. Therefore breeding large seeded tomato cultivars to hasten and improve production does not seem to open prospects.

    Notes: Summary An incomplete diallel cross with selfs and reciprocals was made with twelve cultivars of Gerbera jamesonii. Very significant differences occurred between GCA's of the parents for cut flower yield, earliness and number of lateral shoots. The selfs were mainly responsible for the significant SCA's. A positive genetic correlation occurs between the number of lateral shoots at anthesis of the first flower and total flower production. The phenotypic performance of parents (measured on cuttings) was poorly related to their breeding value (measured on seedlings). It is suggested that this is due to physiological differences between cuttings and seedlings.

    Notes: Summary A non-parasitic post-harvest disorder of white cabbage, called grey speck disease, is described. Between years and between locations significant differences were found in the incidence of this deviation. The causal factors of these differences are not yet known. Between strains of ‘Langedijk Storage White’ distinct differences insusceptibility were assessed. Resistance to grey speck disease is governed by a polygenic system with additive and non-additive components. Estimates of heritability were low. By family selection for two generations, the level of resistance could be considerably increased. Complete elimination of the genes causing grey speck disease is probably only possible by line selection.
