Notes:
Raman spectra are reported for liquid ammonia and ammonia in solutions covering wide concentration ranges in both carbon tetrachloride and acetonitrile. The spectra, all of which were obtained at room temperature, show a number of features which are attributed to association between ammonia molecules and, in the case of the acetonitrile solution, to ammonia-solvent interactions. The spectra indicate the existence of essentially free rotation of ammonia molecules in dilute solutions in carbon tetrachloride, but also show new bands characteristic of associated species at high concentration in both solvents and in the pure liquid state. Previous uncertainlty about the assignment of bands in the N—H stretchin multiplet of the liquid ammonia spectrum has been removed, and it has been demonstrated that Fermi resonance plays only a small role in this region.
