Notes: Herein the design and characterization of a fast energy flux density gauge are described. The gauge is based on a thermoelectrical pair with the junction made of a thin layer of silver. High absorptivity is attained by an electrolytic deposit of platinum black on the silver coat. Dynamic calibration gives a response time below 100 μs. Computer methods to obtain the energy flux density from temperature-time history were evaluated: constant thermophysical properties of the thermoelectrical pair can be assumed in the ignition studies for which the gauge has been developed. The results of the tests performed with igniters of pelleted boron/potassium nitrate and black powder, used in solid propellant ignition, are shown. The gauge developed can be applied to fast processes which require small response time. The gauge does not need previous calibration, it is resistant to vibrations and accelerations, and at the same time it is small in size, economical, and easy to build. Changing the substrate or the thermoelectrical pair, the applications and ranges of temperature can be extended.

Notes: Oxidative carotenoid degradation causes paprika color loss during storage. Ethoxyquin, a synthetic antioxidant, is used in the spice industry to prevent carotenoid loss during postharvest handling. However, ethoxyquin treated paprika is unacceptable for some markets and consumers. Naturally derived antioxidants, i.e., rosemary extracts, ascorbic acid, δ-tocopherol, and mixed tocopherols were tested as color protectants in two paprika cultivars. Extractable color, surface color and carotenoid concentrations were determined before storage and then monthly. After 4 mo storage at ambient temperature, the control treatment lost 63% of the initial extractable color, the δ-tocopherol treated samples lost 32%, and the ethoxyquin lost 6% color.

Notes: The practical aspects of a recently deduced formalism for the direct solution of the powder diffraction pattern of a layer crystal are addressed. It is shown that the obtained solution is particularly well suited to combination with a deconvolution procedure based on a series development of the peak profile. The influence of noise and step size on the obtained solution is discussed. Computer simulation is used to assess the robustness of the proposed procedure. The developed procedure is applied to a powder sample of Y2Co17 that is affected by planar disorder.

Notes: [Auszug] The self-assembly of semiconductor quantum dots has opened up new opportunities in photonics. Quantum dots are usually described as ‘artificial atoms’, because electron and hole confinement gives rise to discrete energy levels. This picture can be justified from the shell structure ...

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we study a single-server queue with finite capacity in which several space priority mechanisms are implemented. The arrival process is the general Markovian arrival process (MAP) which has been used to model the bursty arrival processes commonly arising in communication applications. The service times are generally distributed. These buffer mechanisms enable the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) layer to adapt the quality of the cell transfer to the quality of service requirements of the specific broadband ISDN services and to improve the utilization of the network resources. This is done by a selective discarding of cells according to the class they belong to. Computable expressions for various performance parameters are obtained. Numerical results are given for the case of a two-state Markov-modulated Poisson process (MMPP) and deterministic service times. The values derived can be used to evaluate the benefits of using priorities in an ATM network when the traffic is bursty and to make a comparative study of the buffer mechanisms. These results extend the models previously developed, which were limited to Poisson arrivals.

Notes: Abstract Fluorescence characteristics of several polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) of toxicological and environmental interest in the presence of cationic, anionic, neutral surfactants, α-cyclodextrin and β-cyclodextrin were examined. The fluorescence enhancement of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzofuran (TTCDF) in the presence of polyoxyethylene(10) lauryl ether (C12E10) medium was utilized to establish a sensitive spectrofluorimetric method for determination of TTCDF. The optimization of variables as the concentration of surfactant, percentage of organic solvent and temperature, and effect of possible interferences from other PCDFs, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCCDs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and Arochlors were investigated. The method, which has a detection limit of 1.30 ng ml−1, has been applied to the determination of TTCDF in sea water with acceptable recoveries.

Description: Surface transport of waters in the region off the Guajira Península (Colombia) is dominated alternately by a major cyclonic current in the southwestern comer of the Caribbean Sea and by wind induced coastal upwelling in a yearly cycle. Observation of the yearly wind cycle and of surface salinities as affected by upwelling and by runoff from the adjacent Magdalena River provide a record of seasonal variations in the location of the zone of confluence between waters from the cyclonic current and waters from the main axis of flow of the Caribbean Sea.
