    Notes: Low-level nuclear counting has been carried out on sediment cores from Lake Bouchet in France and from the Black Sea. The cores span the past 20 Ka. The variation of α and β particle counting rates with core depth, i.e. with time, shows features which can reasonably be associated with climatic change. The discussion is augmented by some high resolution γ ray spectrometry measurements of the specific activity of particular component radionuclides (214Pb, 212Pb and 40K) in the Black Sea cores.

    Notes: Summary Patterns of biparental chloroplast gene transmission inChlamydomonas reinhardtii diploids produced by polyethylene glycol (PEG) fusion were found to be similar to those seen in sexual diploids (VanWinkle-Swift and Birky 1978). Examination of the phenotypes of diploid clones showed that the PEG diploids produced a heterogeneous set of allelic frequencies. Neither the frequencies of parental nor recombinant phenotypes were normally distributed. In addition, frequencies of reciprocal recombinant phenotypes showed no significant correlation in the clones from individual PEG diploids. The frequencies of parental phenotypes, on the other hand, were significantly negatively correlated. Like the data from sexual diploids, this is evidence that recombinant frequencies from clones of PEG diploids are not directly related to frequencies of reciprocal recombination. The similarity of results obtained in sexual and PEG diploids supports the hypothesis that the mechanisms operating during biparental chloroplast gene inheritance in PEG diploids are identical to those in sexual diploids.

    Notes: Summary Chlamydomonas reinhardii diploids homozygous for the plus mating-type (mt +) allele were constructed via polyethylene glycol (PEG)-induced cell fusion to investigate the transmission of chloroplast genes. We used two methods to determine whether the fusion products (PEG diploids) had inherited chloroplast markers uniparentally or biparentally. One method (multiple clone analysis) was found to markedly improve the detection of biparental transmission. With this method the frequency of biparental PEG-induced diploids was comparable to that seen in sexual diploids. Multiple clone analysis also demonstrated that fusion products which showed biparental inheritance were an extremely heterogeneous group. In some crosses, pre-treatment of one parent with isolated flagella from cells of the opposite mating type was used. This pre-treatment has been reported to promote chloroplast gene transmission from the mt + parent in diploids produced by PEG fusion (Adams 1982). In our crosses flagellar pretreatment had no significant effect on chloroplast gene transmission or recombination frequences. A significant bias was found for the date a cross was performed, but neither parent preferentially transmitted its alleles in all crosses. This indicates the necessity of comparing data from treated and control crosses done on the same day. We conclude from our data that separate hypotheses are not required to explain biparental inheritance in sexual versus PEG-induced diploids. The absence of biased parental allelic ratios with PEG-induced biparental diploid clones underscores their usefulness for the study of biparental gene transmission.

    Notes: Abstract This study uses a model of snow-cover duration, an observed climate data set for the Australian alpine area, and a set of regional climate-change scenarios to assess quantitatively how changes in climate may affect snow cover in the Australian Alps. To begin, a regional interannual climate data set of high spatial resolution is prepared for input to the snow model and the resulting simulated interannual and spatial variations in snow-cover duration are assessed and compared with observations. The model provides a reasonable simulation of the sensitivities of snow-cover duration to changes in temperature and precipitation in the Australian Alps, although its performance is poorer at sites highly marginal for snow cover. (In a separate comparison, the model also performs well for sites in the European Alps.) The input climate data are then modified in line with scenarios of regional climate change based on the results of five global climate models run in enhanced greenhouse experiments. The scenarios are for the years 2030 and 2070 and allow for uncertainty associated with projecting future emissions of greenhouse gases and with estimating the sensitivity of the global climate system to enhanced greenhouse forcing. Attention focuses on the climate changes most favourable (‘best-case scenario’) and least favourable (‘worst-case scenario’) for snow cover amongst the range of climate changes in the scenarios. Under the best case scenario for 2030, simulated average snow-cover duration and the frequency of years of more than 60 days cover decline at all sites considered. However, at the higher sites (e.g., more than 1700 m) the effect is not very marked. For the worst case scenario, a much more dramatic decline in snow conditions is simulated. At higher sites, simulated average snow cover duration roughly halves by 2030 and approaches zero by 2070. At lower sites (around 1400 m), near zero average values are simulated by 2030 (compared to durations of around 60 days for current climate). These simulated changes, ranging between the best and worst case, are likely to be indicative of how climate change will affect natural snow-cover duration in the Australian Alps. However, note that the model does not allow directly for changes in the frequency and intensity of snow-bearing circulation systems, nor do the climate-change scenarios allow possible changes in interannual variability (particularly that due to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation) and local topographical effects not resolved by global climate models. The simulated changes in snow cover are worthy of further consideration in terms of their implications for the ski industry and tourism, water resources and hydroelectric power, and land-use management and planning.

    Notes: Abstract Sulfhemoglobinated erythrocytes (SHb-RBC's) were examined for utility as an optical multiple indicator dilution tracer in lung studies. A device was developed to measure this tracer optically in flowing blood. Arterial blood was sampled from cannulated, anesthetized dogs and pumped through the device that measured the optical density (OD) of blood at 620 nm. This system was calibrated for increasing SHb-RBC concentrations using an unsteady-state indicator dilution procedure. Areas under optical density (ΔOD) profiles were well correlated with injected SHb-RBC volumes using linear regression (r 2〉0.9). This linearity was independent of blood oxygenation, hematocrit, or pH.In vivo lung indicator dilution studies in the intact dog were performed and compared to radioisotope indicator studies using51Cr labeled erythrocytes. Coefficient of variation (CV) between the two curves was 0.065 under baseline conditions, 0.085 for studies performed during hypoxia, and 0.073 after pH was lowered. We conclude that this device linearly measured SHb-RBC content in whole blood and that SHb-RBC is as accurate a lung indicator dilution tracer as51Cr-erythrocytes.

    Notes: Abstract The standard rate of oxygen consumption of ammocoetes (larvae) ofGeotria australis with a mean weight of c. 0.5 g was 9.6, 31.4 and 59.4μl g−1 h−1 at 4.5, 15.5 and 25.0°C respectively, which gives an overall Q10 of 2.4. The regression coefficient for the logarithmic relationship between oxygen consumption and body weight at 15.5°C was 0.704. The ammocoetes ofG. australis have a much lower rate of oxygen consumption at 15.5 and 25.0°C than those of holarctic lampreys. This presumably reflects the lower oxygen delivery pressure to their tissues and helps account for their slow growth rate. At 15.5°C, ammocoetes ofG. australis emerged from the substrate at 21–25 mm Hg and, unlike those of the Northern HemisphereIchthyomyzon greeleyi, died at 14–17 mm Hg. Thus, despite having a thinner water/blood barrier in the gills and blood with a higher oxygen affinity and capacity than holarctic ammocoetes, the larvae ofG. australis cannot survive very low dissolved oxygen tensions. This is apparently related to an inability of larvalG. australis to meet the high oxygen requirements of the respiratory pump at these oxygen tensions. During metamorphosis, oxygen consumption at 15.5°C rose from approximately 27μl g−1 h−1 at the beginning of transformation to 33.2μl g−1 h−1 by Stage 3 and then rapidly to 66μl g−1 h−1 at Stage 6. It remained near this level in Stage 7 and the downstream migrant.
