    Description: Central Brittany comprises a major shear belt formed during the Hercynian Orogeny. In this paper, we present a model for the restoration of the belt, based on an exhaustive compilation of available structural data. The model uses a geostatistical analysis of cleavage orientation data. The analysis shows that the eastern part of Central Brittany has been deformed by bulk dextral strike-slip, a feature that validates previous structural interpretations. It also provides explanations for: the strain patterns observed within and around the restored domain; the nature of domain boundaries and of associated kinematics; and the occurrence of local superimposed deformations.

    Description: Crustal deformations often occur along gently-dipping shear zones, where the scale of fluid transfers and the coupling between deformations and fluid availability are important questions. We present a structural and geochemical study of felsic rocks deformed at about 350-400{degrees}C within a crustal-scale decollement zone from the Hercynian Belt of South Brittany. At regional scale, deformations resulted in large distributed strains accumulated by dissolution-crystallization of quartz and feldspars. Mass transfers produced veins growing parallel to the foliation. Veins were major precipitation zones, while adjacent rocks were the main zones of dissolution. Deformation patterns, vein mineralogy, and oxygen isotope data show that both the amount of fluids and the scale of fluid flow were limited, and that the dominant transfer mechanism was diffusion. Results suggest that the deformation zone has acted as a trap for early fluids rather than as a syn-kinematic fluid channel.

    Description: Compressive basins show various geometries of growth structures. In this paper, we examine the effects of the rate and nature of synkinematic sedimentation by comparing analogue models and field examples. We performed different types of experiments in order to simulate various natural conditions, the parameters tested including the rate of synkinematic sedimentation and the presence of a potential decollement layer deposited during deformation. Modelling techniques are similar to those usually used for experiments on brittle-ductile systems made of sand and silicone putty. To study the influence of the synkinematic sedimentation rate, we used sets of experiments with different velocity ratios R between the rate of sedimentation (Vs) and the rate of uplift of the top of the structure (Vu). In standard experiments, we deposited only sand during deformation. In all experiments, growth folds and growth faults developed. The geometry of growth folds changes from a steep anticline for R=1, to a rounded broken anticline when R exceeds 2. The geometry of growth reverse faults changes: from segments which initiate with a dip angle of about 30{degrees}, but then flatten or steepen, for R=1/2 and for R=1, respectively. For some sets of experiments, a thin silicone layer deposited instead of sand at some stage of sedimentation simulated the introduction of potential decollement layers. When a change in the nature of synkinematic sedimentation occurs between the two flanks of a fold, a fault develops in the flank where brittle material dominates. The direction of growth folds forming during compression in front of a ramp and above a decollement layer is parallel to the ramp and oblique to the direction of bulk shortening. Good correlations are observed between experimental geometries and field examples from the southern Pyrenees (Eastern Ebro Basin and Jaca Basin, Spain) and the Apennines (Italy).

    Description: This paper discusses the deformation pattern of the Murchison Greenstone Belt, which is located in the northeastern Kaapvaal Craton, South Africa. The belt strikes northeast to southwest, is surrounded by gneisses and granitoids, and contains Meso-Archaean metavolcanics and metasediments. It is narrow, strongly deformed, and deeply rooted in the centre with a bulk keel geometry. Regional fabrics consist of a sub-vertical foliation at a low angle to the belt strike and bears steeply plunging lineations. From available data and our observations, we constructed a map of the foliation trajectories. The map reveals the following: the deformations are distributed, both the belt and the northern bounding gneisses are deformed together in a ductile way, and the plutons were emplaced during regional deformation. The overall structural pattern, together with the existence of contemporaneous intrusive and extrusive rocks outcropping at the surface, supports a vertical tectonic model, with burial of the upper crustal rocks within the underlying weak material during horizontal crustal shortening. The occurrence of leucogranite intrusions is consistent with the melting of buried sediments belonging to the belt at depth. Finally, ages available on syn-kinematic granitoids (2.97 to 2.77 Ga) suggest a long-lasting tectonic process.

    Description: Two examples of granitic stones from Brittany (western France) commercialized under the names of "gris-bleu de Louvigné" and "bleu de Lanhélin" were characterized in order to explore how the provenance of a building stone can be traced back with a maximum of confidence. For this purpose, petrographical, geochemical and magnetic characteristics, representing more than 70 quantitative and qualitative variables, were compiled for a total of 32 samples. We have defined two reference populations for these building stones and have extracted their discriminative characteristics. We have then compared four randomly selected samples and two foreign commercial counterparts of these stones to the reference populations. Discriminative variables differ from one case of comparison to the other, which indicates that a combination of various tools and variables will be generally required to unequivocally fingerprint the origin of a given granitic stone. Where several quarries are mining a single geological unit within a composite intrusion, the provenance of a granitic rock can be defined at the scale of the intrusion. In addition, stones coming from two different intrusions from the same batholith can be distinguished. We conclude that the provenance of any granitic building stone is identifiable, especially if the intrinsic variability of a population of samples representative of that stone has been previously circumscribed. This study underlines that the compilation of databases for building stone identity cards is an essential first step toward the creation of official labels guaranteeing stone provenances.

    Description: A synthesis of existing geological, structural and geophysical data shows that the south Armorican Hercynian belt was marked by syn-convergence crustal thinning and dextral wrenching that were in part coeval in late Carboniferous times. Our kinematic model is further supported by new structural data and 40Ar/ 39 Ar ages on synkinematic leucogranites. Extension and strike-slip followed earlier crustal thickening and exhumation of high-pressure metamorphic units in late Devonian-early Carboniferous times. Crustal extension led to the development of core complexes cored by migmatites and crust-derived granite laccoliths. At this time, the South Armorican shear zone acted as a transfer zone separating the extending domain of South Brittany from the non-extending domain of Central Brittany submitted to dextral wrenching. The overall structural pattern and attached kinematics are compared with recent numerical models and illustrated by a 3D interpretative model that integrates geological and deep seismic reflection data (ARMOR 2 profile).

    Description: Pegmatites generally behave as resistant objects compared to their host rocks during solid-state deformation. They usually show folding or boudinage within their host rocks, features observed from low-grade to high-grade deformations, up to upper-amphibolite metamorphic conditions. Here we describe mylonitic pegmatite veins emplaced within S-C fabric-bearing two-mica granites. Pegmatites consist mainly of feldspar and quartz ribbons, with remnants of coarse-grained Kfs phenocrysts. Quartz ribbons are made of large grains elongated in the shearing direction, with evidence of dynamic recrystallization involving grain boundary migration. Ribbons show very strong lattice-preferred orientations of c-axes at low angles to the stretching lineation. From these, we propose that quartz ribbons are formed by oriented growth during syn-shearing crystallization of the pegmatite. Subsequent syn-shearing solid-state deformation involved grain size reduction accompanied by prism 〈a〉 slip. The occurrence of pegmatite mylonites within granitoid intrusions should be considered as a univocal argument for synkinematic emplacement.

    Description: Apatite is a ubiquitous accessory mineral found in most magmatic rocks and is often the only U-bearing mineral available to date mafic rocks because primary zircon and/or baddeleyite are not present. In this paper, U-Pb LA-ICP-MS dating of apatite was applied to seven different dike and sill samples of dolerite from the Variscan belt of Brittany (Armorican Massif, western France). These dolerites, which are characterized by a within-plate tholeiite geochemical signature, are organized in several dense swarms across the belt. Their geochemical compositions are homogeneous although they intrude a large geographical area subdivided into several domains each characterized by different tectonic-metamorphic settings. Their emplacement ages were so far poorly constrained due to the difficulty to date these mafic rocks using either the 40 Ar/ 39 Ar or the U-Pb methods on classical minerals like mica, plagioclase, or zircon. Although the closure temperature of apatite is lower than the emplacement temperature of the magma, physical models show that the time needed to solidify and cool these mafic dikes and sills below the apatite closure temperature is basically of the order of 100 years or less. Consequently, the U-Pb dates obtained on apatite can be interpreted as the emplacement ages for these mafic intrusions. Our results demonstrate that, in all cases, the apatite grains do carry enough radiogenic Pb to be dated by in situ U-Pb analyses and yield a 207 Pb-corrected mean age of 363.4 ± 5.8 Ma. These results reveal the existence of a major and short-lived magmatic event in the Variscan belt of Brittany during the Devonian-Carboniferous transition, a feature further highlighted by field evidence. Beyond the geological implications of these results, U-Pb LA-ICP-MS dating of apatite appears to represent an ideal tool to date small size mafic intrusions.

    Description: Northeast Asia is the greatest area in the world where continental extension is documented, from Transbaikalia to the Pacific coast. The major extensional events occurred during Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous times and are marked by rift basins filled with continental sediments and volcanic rocks, metamorphic core complexes, and extensive magmatism. Here, we review the different types of extensional structures in the region using our own examples from eastern Mongolia, including new data from the Gobi area, and those previously documented in the adjacent regions. We further provide a compilation of available ages, including new data from Transbaikalia, to constrain crustal stretching throughout northeastern Asia. Our analysis shows that extension is not correlated to orogenic collapse, but is coeval with two major changes in plate kinematics that occurred at ca. 140 Ma: the closure of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean and a major change in the subduction direction of the Izanagi oceanic plate towards northeast Asia, from high-angle to low-angle convergence. These major changes in plate kinematics combined with an abnormally hot pre-extension state of the continental lithosphere might have triggered spreading in northeast Asia.
