    Description: The Foulden Maar deposit, a finely laminated lacustrine diatomite from the South Island of New Zealand, is the first high-resolution Oligocene-Miocene terrestrial climate record from the midlatitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. We use the presence of orbital and solar cycles within the physical properties records from the deposit to infer that the laminations are annual varves and that the deposit spans ~100 k.y. When combined with magnetostratigraphy and 40 Ar/ 39 Ar data, we can assign the diatomite to chron C6Cn.2n (23.033–22.931 Ma), coeval with the rapid deglaciation of Antarctica during the second half of the Mi-1 transient glaciation event. Both obliquity and precession cycles occur in the physical properties records from the site, indicating a strong ocean-atmosphere coupling in the Southern Hemisphere and influence from both low and high latitudes. The appearance of a strong obliquity component, in particular, may indicate a transient incursion of the Subtropical Front onto the Campbell Plateau during the Mi-1 deglaciation.

    Description: In this paper, we deal with the exact circular string matching problem (abbreviated as ECSM). Given a string P = p 1 p 2 ··· p m , a string P ( i ) = p i p i +1 ··· p m p 1 ··· p i –1 , for 1 ≤ i ≤ m , is a circular string of P . Given a text string T = t 1 t 2 ··· t n and a pattern P , the ECSM problem is to find all occurrences of P ( i ) in text T for 1 ≤ i ≤ m . This paper proposes two algorithms that perform searching of a circular string on text using the bit-parallel technique. Our algorithms use only the composition of bitwise-logical operations and basic arithmetic operations, and apply this technique to solve the problem. These algorithms are given names CSBNDM and CSBNDN q , respectively. We give several experiments to verify that they have good performance for random strings and DNA sequences.

    Description: Mutations in the gene encoding NLRP3 cause a spectrum of autoinflammatory diseases known as cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes (CAPS). NLRP3 is a key component of one of several distinct cytoplasmic multiprotein complexes (inflammasomes) that mediate the maturation of the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) by activating caspase-1. Although several models for inflammasome activation, such as K(+) efflux, generation of reactive oxygen species and lysosomal destabilization, have been proposed, the precise molecular mechanism of NLRP3 inflammasome activation, as well as the mechanism by which CAPS-associated mutations activate NLRP3, remain to be elucidated. Here we show that the murine calcium-sensing receptor (CASR) activates the NLRP3 inflammasome, mediated by increased intracellular Ca(2+) and decreased cellular cyclic AMP (cAMP). Ca(2+) or other CASR agonists activate the NLRP3 inflammasome in the absence of exogenous ATP, whereas knockdown of CASR reduces inflammasome activation in response to known NLRP3 activators. CASR activates the NLRP3 inflammasome through phospholipase C, which catalyses inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate production and thereby induces release of Ca(2+) from endoplasmic reticulum stores. The increased cytoplasmic Ca(2+) promotes the assembly of inflammasome components, and intracellular Ca(2+) is required for spontaneous inflammasome activity in cells from patients with CAPS. CASR stimulation also results in reduced intracellular cAMP, which independently activates the NLRP3 inflammasome. cAMP binds to NLRP3 directly to inhibit inflammasome assembly, and downregulation of cAMP relieves this inhibition. The binding affinity of cAMP for CAPS-associated mutant NLRP3 is substantially lower than for wild-type NLRP3, and the uncontrolled mature IL-1beta production from CAPS patients' peripheral blood mononuclear cells is attenuated by increasing cAMP.     Notes: A phase-shifted (PS) distributed-feedback (DFB) laser with linearly chirped grating (CG) was analyzed using the coupled-mode equations and rate equations. It was found that the mode instability of a DFB laser was caused by both the lasing-mode movement and the deterioration of the effective reflectivity spectrum of the corrugated-grating waveguide caused by the nonuniform carrier distribution under the injection. By suitable arrangement of the chirped factor of the PS-CG-DFB laser and the phase-shift value, PS-CG-DFB laser can overcome the effective reflectivity spectrum-deterioration problem and make the mode more stable under injection.

    Notes: Band structures of relaxed InSb/InAs1−xSbx strained-layer superlattices (SLSs) were calculated based on Herman-Skillman neutral atom ionization energies, effective dipole theory, and strain shift of band edges. The conduction-band minimum and the valence-band maximum of InAs1−xSbx are lower in energy than those of InSb, respectively. The band structures of InSb/InAs1−xSbx are type II SLSs and an extreme type II superlattice is predicted for x〈0.82. This extreme type II superlattice with a proper structure factor can have favorable properties for infrared detectors covering the 8–12 μm wavelength range. The requirement for layer thickness of InSb/InAs1−xSbx SLSs with different absorption mechanisms was discussed.

    Notes: Phase-shifted distributed feedback laser with linearly chirped grating (PS-CG-DFB) was analyzed. The field distribution, threshold gain difference between the lasing mode and the next lowest threshold gain mode, linewidth of the lasing mode, and output power of PS-CG-DFB were self-consistently calculated under different injection levels. It is found that the lasing mode pattern and the carrier concentration distribution are "locked'' at high injection level due to the strong interaction between carriers and photons. The chirped grating compensates the spatial hole burning effect to the mode stability and makes the mode stable in the whole injection region.

    Notes: A new kind of distributed feedback (DFB) laser with a linearly chirped grating is proposed and investigated theoretically for the first time. The eigenmodes of the chirped grating DFB (CG-DFB) and the field intensity distribution are calculated. With a suitable cavity length and chirp factor, the threshold gain difference to the next competence mode can be very large and will keep the single longitudinal mode stable. The chirp factor can be chosen to make the field intensity distribution quite uniform and at the same time keep the threshold gain difference large. This behavior effectively suppresses spatial hole burning and hence makes CG-DFB lasers that are stable single mode at high power, and with a narrow linewidth.

    Notes: A perovskite-like single-crystal substrate material has been investigated that simultaneously permits epitaxial growth of 1-2-3 superconductor films and possesses desirable rf properties of low dielectric constant and loss tangent. The lattice constant of 3.792 A(ring) provides a lattice match to within 1% of the a axis of 1-2-3. Sputtered films of erbium-barium-copper-oxide have been produced on (100) LaAlO3 substrates that exhibit sharp resistive transitions at 90 K (ΔT=1K), bulk superconductivity as determined by ac susceptibility measurements, and nearly single-crystal growth as evidenced by x-ray diffraction and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. The high-frequency dielectric properties of LaAlO3 were experimentally investigated at several temperatures. The low-frequency dielectric constant was measured to be 15 and the microwave loss tangent ranged from 6×10−4 at room temperature to 5×10−6 at 4 K.
