Description: The rapid growth of deformable and stretchable electronics calls for a deformable and stretchable power source. We report a scalable approach for energy harvesters and self-powered sensors that can be highly deformable and stretchable. With conductive liquid contained in a polymer cover, a shape-adaptive triboelectric nanogenerator (saTENG) unit can effectively harvest energy in various working modes. The saTENG can maintain its performance under a strain of as large as 300%. The saTENG is so flexible that it can be conformed to any three-dimensional and curvilinear surface. We demonstrate applications of the saTENG as a wearable power source and self-powered sensor to monitor biomechanical motion. A bracelet-like saTENG worn on the wrist can light up more than 80 light-emitting diodes. Owing to the highly scalable manufacturing process, the saTENG can be easily applied for large-area energy harvesting. In addition, the saTENG can be extended to extract energy from mechanical motion using flowing water as the electrode. This approach provides a new prospect for deformable and stretchable power sources, as well as self-powered sensors, and has potential applications in various areas such as robotics, biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology, and entertainment.

Description: Two series of samples of single-layer IrMn and IrMn/FePd bilayer films, deposited on a single-crystal MgO substrate at different IrMn deposition temperatures ( T s  = 300–700 °C), were investigated using magnetron sputtering. L 1 2 ordering was revealed for the 30 nm-thick IrMn epitaxial (001) films with T s  ≥ 400 °C, determined by synchrotron radiation x-ray diffractometry (XRD). XRD results also provide evidence of the epitaxial growth of the IrMn films on MgO substrate. Increasing T s from 400 to 700 °C monotonically increases the ordering parameter of L 1 2 phases from 0.17 to 0.81. An in-plane exchange bias field ( H eb ) of 22 Oe is obtained in a 10 nm-thick FePd film that is deposited on the disordered IrMn films. As the L 1 2 ordering of the IrMn layers increases, the H eb gradually decreases to 0 Oe, meaning that the exchange bias behavior vanishes. The increased surface roughness, revealed by atomic force microscopy, of the epitaxial IrMn layers with increasing T s cannot be the main cause of the decrease in H eb due to the compensated surface spins regardless of the disordered and ordered (001) IrMn layers. The change of antiferromagnetic structure from the A 1 to the L 1 2 phase was correlated with the evolution of H eb .

Description: The spin and orbital magnetic moments of the Fe 3 O 4 epitaxial ultrathin film synthesized by plasma assisted simultaneous oxidization on MgO(100) have been studied with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The ultrathin film retains a rather large total magnetic moment, i.e., (2.73 ± 0.15)  μ B /f.u., which is ∼70% of that for the bulk-like Fe 3 O 4 . A significant unquenched orbital moment up to 0.54 ± 0.05  μ B /f.u. was observed, which could come from the symmetry breaking at the Fe 3 O 4 /MgO interface. Such sizable orbital moment will add capacities to the Fe 3 O 4 -based spintronics devices in the magnetization reversal by the electric field.

Description: Purpose. The study characterizes the impact of obesity on postoperative radiation-associated toxicities in women with endometrial cancer (EC). Material and Methods. A retrospective study identified 96 women with EC referred to a large urban institution’s radiation oncology practice for postoperative whole pelvic radiotherapy (WPRT) and/or intracavitary vaginal brachytherapy (ICBT). Demographic and clinicopathologic data were obtained. Toxicities were graded according to RTOG Acute Radiation Morbidity Scoring Criteria. Follow-up period ranged from 1 month to 11 years (median 2 years). Data were analyzed by χ2, logistic regression, and recursive partitioning analyses. Results. 68 EC patients who received WPRT and/or ICBT were analyzed. Median age was 52 years (29–73). The majority were Hispanic (71%). Median BMI at diagnosis was 34.5 kg/m2 (20.5–56.6 kg/m2). BMI was independently associated with radiation-related cutaneous () and gynecologic-related () toxicities. Younger women also reported more gynecologic-related toxicities (). Adjuvant radiation technique was associated with increased gastrointestinal- and genitourinary-related toxicities but not gynecologic-related toxicity. Conclusions. Increasing BMI was associated with increased frequency of gynecologic and cutaneous radiation-associated toxicities. Additional studies to critically evaluate the radiation treatment dosing and treatment fields in obese EC patients are warranted to identify strategies to mitigate the radiation-associated toxicities in these women.

Description: Spin pumping effect in Bi 2 Se 3 /Fe 3 Si and Fe/Bi 2 Te 3 heterostructures was studied. High quality films of Bi 2 Se 3 (001) on ferromagnetic Fe 3 Si(111) layer and Fe(111) films on Bi 2 Te 3 (001) layer were grown epitaxially by molecular beam epitaxy. Using a microwave cavity source, large voltages due to the Inverse Spin Hall Effect (V ISHE ) were detected in Bi 2 Se 3 (001)/Fe 3 Si(111) bi-layer at room temperature. V ISHE of up to 63.4 ± 4.0  μ V at 100 mW microwave power (P MW ) was observed. In addition, Fe(111)/Bi 2 Te 3 (001) bi-layer also showed a large V ISHE of 3.0 ± 0.1  μ V at P MW of 25 mW. V ISHE of both structures showed microwave linear power dependence in accordance with the theoretical model of spin pumping. The spin Hall angle was calculated to be 0.0053 ± 0.002 in Bi 2 Se 3 and was estimated to be 0.0068 ± 0.003 in Bi 2 Te 3 . The charge current density (J c ) of Bi 2 Se 3 /Fe 3 Si and Fe/Bi 2 Te 3 structures are comparable and are about 2–5 times higher than the Fe 3 Si/normal metal and Fe 3 Si/GaAs results. The significant enhancement of spin current in topological insulator/ferromagnetic metal (TI/FM) and FM/TI bilayers is attributed to strong spin-orbit coupling inherent of TIs and demonstrates the high potential of exploiting TI-based structures for spintronic applications.

Description: LaMnO 3+δ films with various thicknesses were grown on LaAlO 3 (001) single crystal substrate to investigate the effect of in-plane compressive strain (∼−0.57%) on magnetic properties. All films exhibit a blocking temperature T b at which the zero field cooled magnetization reaches a maximum, indicating the ferromagnetic (FM) nanoclusters are embedded in the background of antiferromagnetic (AFM) matrix. The onset temperature of FM transition T c and T b is increased by 24% and 89%, respectively, with the thickness decreasing from 82.4 nm to 9.2 nm. Simultaneously, the saturation magnetization greatly increases by 309%, which is ascribed to the strain-induced transition of AFM to FM phase due to the orbital order structure switching from x 2 − 1/y 2 −1 [A-type] to (x 2 − y 2 ) + (z 2 − 1) [F-type].

Description: In 2003, we developed an ab initio program, ZCURVE 1.0, to find genes in bacterial and archaeal genomes. In this work, we present the updated version (i.e. ZCURVE 3.0). Using 422 prokaryotic genomes, the average accuracy was 93.7% with the updated version, compared with 88.7% with the original version. Such results also demonstrate that ZCURVE 3.0 is comparable with Glimmer 3.02 and may provide complementary predictions to it. In fact, the joint application of the two programs generated better results by correctly finding more annotated genes while also containing fewer false-positive predictions. As the exclusive function, ZCURVE 3.0 contains one post-processing program that can identify essential genes with high accuracy (generally 〉90%). We hope ZCURVE 3.0 will receive wide use with the web-based running mode. The updated ZCURVE can be freely accessed from http://cefg.uestc.edu.cn/zcurve/ or http://tubic.tju.edu.cn/zcurveb/ without any restrictions.

Description: Public perception of nanotechnology is important as it helps scientists and policy makers understand how the public decides whether or not to support the development of these technologies. To examine the public’s perception and attitude toward nanotechnology in China, we conducted a case study in Dalian through a survey in 2013 ( N = 741). Support for the technology was indicated by 96.6% of the sample. This sample also had the highest self-reported awareness of nanotechnology worldwide, with 88.4% of the sample reporting having heard of nanotechnology, although they possessed little knowledge about the technology. Support was associated more with beliefs (e.g. expectations for nanotechnology, trust, benefit/risk ratio) than with knowledge. Mass media news reports and advertisements were the top means of communication about nanotechnology. It is very possible that the rate of support for nanotechnology may change in future, as with support for genetically modified food.
