    Notes: Membranes of synthetic poly(α-amino acids), namely, poly(γ-methyl L-glutamate) (PMLG), poly(γ-benzyl L-glutamate) (PBLG), poly(L-glutamic acid) (PLGA), poly(L-methionine) (PLM), and poly(N∊-carbobenzoxy-L-lysine) (PCLL), were prepared and their permeabilities of oxygen dissolved in water were measured in the 8-50°C temperature range using an oxygen electrode. Permeation curves for the poly(α-amino acid) membranes did not approach steady-state currents because of membrane degradation. To eliminate this, the membranes were laminated between polystyrene membranes; thus, the poly(α-amino acid) membranes came in direct contact with neither cathode surface nor electrolyte solution. No effect of membrane thickness on the permeability was observed. The Arrhenius plots of permeability coefficients for PCLL appear to change slope at about 22°C. This is consistent with the diffusion of oxygen in PCLL through the side-chain regions between helices. Comparisons between the permeability of oxygen dissolved in water and permeability of gaseous oxygen obtained by the high-vacuum method and between the activation energy of permeation of dissolved oxygen and that of gaseous oxygen were made in order to elucidate the effect of water on the oxygen permeation of each polymer. The permeability of the poly(α-amino acid) membranes to dissolved oxygen appears to depend on the properties of the side chains of the polymers.

    Notes: The reaction of poly(vinyl chloride) containing N-methyl dithiocarbamate (PMD) with metal ions in a heterogeneous system and the effect of γ-irradiation on the reactivity were studied. PMD powder suspended in aqueous solutions did not show any reactivity toward metal ions. However, the PMD powder suspended in a methyl alcohol solution formed a chelate with various metal ions. The effects of the reaction time, pH, and the initial concentration of the metal ion were examined. PMD irradiated in methyl alcohol with γ-irradiation doses up to 28 Mrad was compared with the original PMD. The reactivity of the irradiated PMD toward the metal ions did not show any apparent decrease.

    Notes: The reaction of poly(vinyl chloride) containing N-methyl-N-carboxymethyl dithiocarbamate (PSDC) with metal ions in a heterogeneous system and the effects of γ-irradiation on the reactivity were studied. Slurried PSDC has an affinity for a number of metal ions in aqueous solutions. On the basis of analyses for nitrogen and sulfur and on infrared spectra, a possible chelating structure for PSDC was deduced. The gaseous products evolved during the gamma radiolysis of PSDC under vacuum were measured. Although the dithiocarbamate group bonded to the main chain gave some protection against the dehydrochlorination of poly(vinyl chloride) component, a small amount of the carboxymethyl group was decomposed. It was found that with γ-irradiation doses up to 30 Mrad, only about 1 mole-% out of 17.6 mole-% of N-methyl-N-carboxymethyl dithiocarbamate in the polymer was decomposed. It was shown that the reactivity of the irradiated PSDC in water toward metal ions was almost the same as that before irradiation.

    Notes: The effect of N,N-dialkyl dithiocarbamate substitution on the radiation stability of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) film was studied. PVC containing 6.5-15.7 mole-% N,N-dimethyl dithiocarbamate (PDM) and PVC containing 8.3-17.5 mole-% N,N-diethyl dithiocarbamate (PDE) was irradiated with γ-rays from a Co-60 source at room temperature under vacuum. The evolved gaseous products were measured and analyzed with a mass spectrometer. The apparent G values for gas evolution of PDM and PDE decreased remarkably. For example, a G value of 0.10 was obtained for a PDE which contains 17.5 mole-% diethyl dithiocarbamate group. The mass spectrum of the evolved gas from the same PDE sample with 10-Mrad irradiation showed no hydrogen chloride to be present. The external protection was studied using polymer-blended films of PVC and PDE or PDM. The stabilization coefficients for internal protection and external protection in polymer blends were calculated. Although the ESR spectrum of the irradiated PDM, PDE, and PVDE which is synthesized by polymerization of S-vinyl-N,N-diethyl dithiocarbamate (VDE) showed the same sulfur radicals, they were different from those of the irradiated cysteamine hydrochloride and PVC containing N-methyl dithiocarbamate (PMD). From these results, the protection of a polymer by a covalently bound dithiocarbamate was discussed.

    Notes: The permeability of poly-L-methionine (PLM) membrane and its oxidized form to water vapor was studied. Permeability coefficients of the PLM membrane were large, of the order of 10-7 cm3 (S.T.P.)·cm/cm2·sec·cm Hg. The sorption and permeation behavior of the PLM membrane was hydrophobic. The oxidized membrane was prepared by treating one or both sides of the PLM membrane with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide. The membrane oxidized from one side is probably not layered but has a gradient of composition from one surface to the other. The amounts of water sorbed by the modified membrane increased with increase in oxidation time. The permeability coefficients of water vapor through the modified membrane were of the order of 10-6 cm3 (S.T.P.)·cm/cm2·sec·cm Hg.

    Notes: Membranes of copoly(γ-methyl L-glutamate, γ-benzyl L-glutamate) (PMBLG) as well as the related homopolymer membranes were prepared, and permeabilities of oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide were measured in the 0-70°C temperature range. The values of permeability coefficients and solubility coefficients of the copolymers were smaller than those of permeability coefficients and solubility coefficients of the two homopolymers for every gas studied. The diffusion coefficients of the gases showed a minimum at around 25 mole % benzyl glutamate. The temperature at a maximum of tan δ spectra for the membranes showed a maximum at around 25 mole % benzyl glutamate. The Arrhenius plots of diffusion coefficients and solubility coefficients for PMBLG, which contained 50 and 71 mole % benzyl glutamate, showed a break at about 50 and 40°C, respectively. This permeation behavior is explained by assuming a unique interaction between methyl glutamate and benzyl glutamate side chains.

    Notes: The permeability of an asymmetrically oxidized poly(L-methionine) film to oxygen dissolved in water was examined. It was recognized that the permeability along an increasing gradient of oxidized methionine composition is higher than the gradient is reversed. A qualitative analysis of this result was presented in terms of the oxygen solubilities into the film and water absorbed in the film.
