The KSU-CRYEBIS, a cryogenic electron beam ion source, delivers ions over a wide range of ion energy per charge, ion mass, and charge state for atomic physics experiments. Lower charge states yield time-averaged currents in the nA range, whereas the highest charge states, such as Ar18+, Fe24+, Kr34+, and Xe47+, yield time-averaged currents in the pA range. The number of available species and isotopes has been substantially increased, and include metalorganics to produce stable, high-yield beams of metal ions. The high-voltage platform control system and the ion optics have been improved and allow for acceleration of the ions to 160 kV/q as well as for deceleration to a fraction of 1 kV/q. The diagnostics of the facility are continuously being upgraded. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
