Notes: [Auszug] In order to understand the dynamics of near-Earth asteroids (NBAs) over timescales comparable to their lifetimes and the evolutionary pathways between different types of orbits, we have integrated numerically the orbits of two samples of NEAs. The first sample consisted of 26 objects, ...

Notes: Abstract On the basis of the general theory of Hamiltonian systems, we consider the relationship between Lyapunov times and macroscopic diffusion times. We find out that there are two regimes: the Nekhoroshev regime and the resonant overlapping regime. In the first case the diffusion time is exponentially long with respect to Lyapunov times. In the second case, the relationship is polynomial although we do not find any theoretical reason for the existence of a ‘universal’ power law. We show numerical evidences which confirm our theoretical considerations.

Notes: Abstract The classical situation of dynamical systems with two degrees of freedom is completely modified by the introduction of a stochastic element which provides a slow dissolution of the zone of stability. Using a Fokker-Planck method it has been shown that the Gambler's ruin problem is a rather good approximation of the diffusion process. Furthermore the orbits exhibit aC-system character even during the diffusion process.

    Notes: Abstract Dynamical systems with three degrees of freedom can be reduced to the study of a fourdimensional mapping. We consider here, as a model problem, the mapping given by the following equations: $$\left\{ \begin{gathered} x_1 = x_0 + a_1 {\text{ sin (}}x_0 {\text{ + }}y_0 {\text{)}} + b{\text{ sin (}}x_0 {\text{ + }}y_0 {\text{ + }}z_{\text{0}} {\text{ + }}t_{\text{0}} {\text{)}} \hfill \\ y_1 = x_0 {\text{ + }}y_0 \hfill \\ z_1 = z_0 + a_2 {\text{ sin (}}z_0 {\text{ + }}t_0 {\text{)}} + b{\text{ sin (}}x_0 {\text{ + }}y_0 {\text{ + }}z_{\text{0}} {\text{ + }}t_{\text{0}} {\text{) (mod 2}}\pi {\text{)}} \hfill \\ t_1 = z_0 {\text{ + }}t_0 \hfill \\ \end{gathered} \right.$$ We have found that as soon asb≠0, i.e. even for a very weak coupling, a dynamical system with three degrees of freedom has in general either two or zero isolating integrals (besides the usual energy integral).

Notes: Abstract We present a very simple and fast method to separate chaotic from regular orbits for non-integrable Hamiltonian systems. We use the standard map and the Hénon and Heiles potential as model problems and show that this method appears to be at least as sensitive as the frequency-analysis method. We also study the chaoticity of asteroidal motion.

Notes: Abstract The study of the stochasticity of the asteroid belt requires the analysis of a large number of orbits. We detect the dynamical character of a set of 5 400 asteroids using the Fast Lyapunov Indicator, a method of analysis closely related to the computation of the Lyapunov Characteristic Exponents, but cheaper in computational time. For both regular and chaotic orbits we try to associate the motion to the underlying resonances network. For it we consider different methods of classification of rational numbers proposed by number theory, and we choose the one which seems to be strictly related to the dynamical behaviour of a system.

Notes: Abstract It is already known (Froeschlé, Lega and Gonczi, 1997) that the Fast Lyapunov Indicator (FLI), that is the computation on a relatively short time of the largest Lyapunov indicator, allows to discriminate between ordered and weak chaotic motion. We have found that, under certain conditions, the FLI also discriminates between resonant and non-resonant orbits, not only for two-dimensional symplectic mappings but also for higher dimensional ones. Using this indicator, we present an example of the Arnold web detection for four and six-dimensional symplectic maps. We show that this method allows to detect the global transition of the system from an exponentially stable Nekhoroshev’s like regime to the diffusive Chirikov’s one.

Notes: Abstract Since comets appear to be observable only at the expense of rapid aging in the vicinity of the Sun, chaotic routes are considered necessary in order to bring them from their remote places of origin and storage. Recent work on short-period cometary orbits has verified this expectation in general terms but has also shown many examples of temporary resonance trappings and other quasiregular phenomena. For long-period comet dynamics recent developments point to the importance of long-term effects associated with the Galactic tidal field acting in conjunction with the randomizing effect of stellar encounters. This paper presents a comprehensive review of all these aspects of cometary dynamics.

Notes: Abstract Monte Carlo simulations can either be viewed as a numerical method for solving evolutionary equations or as a way for statistically modelling the outcome of chaotic dynamical systems. Thus they are well suited for treating many aspects of cometary dynamics. We present a critical review of past applications of Monte Carlo simulations for both long- and short-period comets indicating the strength and weaknesses of the methods with suggestions for future applications.
