Description / Table of Contents:
Photopolymerization reactions can be followed in layers by means of an isoperibolic calorimeter, provided the experimental data are properly corrected. This can be achieved with the help of the transfer theory, involving an initial calibration of the calorimeter with a temperature needle impuls. The benzoin iso-propyl ether initiated radical photopolymerization of butanediol 1,4-dimethacrylat in poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) layers gives, in aerobic condition, 60% polymer yield, which is independent of the initial monomer concentration. The exponent of the light intensity changes with the degree of polymerization, but is always less than 0.5. The polymerization rate increases sharply at the beginning, reaches a maximum by about 25% conversion and than decreases steeply.
Notes:
