Notes: Abstract The oxidation kinetics and creep behavior of Incoloy 800 were studied in air and in water vapor charged with oxygen. Oxidation kinetics were determined by thermogravimetry. The creep behavior of samples tested in air and in H2O∶O2=1∶1 atmospheres was investigated by electron microscopic techniques. The oxidation rate of samples tested in air was governed by a p-conducting chromia interlayer. Depending upon water vapor pressure, chromia became n-conductive. As a consequence, a continuous rate-governing silica interlayer formed. The oxygen activity in the alloy was established by the dissociative pressure of the respective diffusion-rate-governing oxide scale. The stability of the dispersion-hardening Ti(C, N) particulates within the alloy was affected by the respective oxygen activity. In the samples tested in air, partial oxidation of the particulates due to enhanced oxygen activity caused a loss of coherency with the matrix. As a result, the deformation behavior during creep was changed to planar-slip mode, bringing about loss of creep resistance and ductility.

Notes: The mechanisms of oxide growth and adhesion on high temperature resistant alloys are discussed. Routes for achieving superior oxidation resistance are outlined. The hot corrosion resistance of high temperature alloys seems to be related to the respective oxide adhesion of the protective oxides on them. Ceramic coatings on metals offer additional heat and corrosion protection which can be markedly improved by matching the thermal expansion coefficients (TEC) of substrates to that of dense ceramic coatings.

Description / Table of Contents: The Ternary System Cr-Mn-NiThe ternary system Cr-Mn-Ni has been investigated by using DTA, dilatometry, X-ray diffraction between 25 and 800°C, optical microscopy and micro-hardness techniques. The interior (Mn, Cr)Ni-phase Θ is crystallographically redetermined. The isothermal oxidation behaviour between 700 and 900°C of high manganese alloys having 20 to 50 wt.% chromium has been evaluated. The external oxides formed are determined, their interdependence with oxidation kinetics is discussed.

Notes: The electron-beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) process provides distinctive coatings of a unique columnar microstructure for gas turbine components. Main advantage of this structure is superior tolerance against straining, erosion and thermoshock, thus giving it a major edge in lifetime. This paper outlines the interaction between chemical composition and microstructural evolution EB-PVD zirconia-based thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) and their respective lifetimes in cyclic burner rig and furnace tests. Customizing TBC microstructure by adjusting EB-PVD processing parameters is emphasized. A structural zone diagram for PVD is modified by interconnecting the influence of substrate rotation with microstructural evolutions. Finally, some basic aspects of single source and dual source evaporation are compared.

Description / Table of Contents: Zur Voraussage der Gefügefeinheit eutektischer Mikrostrukturen
Notes: The interphase spacings σ in the microstructures of most binary and pseudobinary “normal” metallic eutectics can roughly be quan- tified with regard to their respective solidification rates v according to a general relationship \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \lambda ^2 \cdot {\rm v} = {\rm constant} $$\end{document} constant the constant being commonly between 10-10 and 10-11 cm3 -1 The designation “normal” relates to similar degrees of undercooling of either phase on a plain-front solidification process at variance with anomaleous eutectics which solidify at different degrees of under- cooling in an uncoupled or weakly-coupled manner. The “constant”, however, is an individual value for each eutectic system. It is lowest for “simple” eutectics forming no intermetallic com- pounds and having low terminal solid solutions. The constant is raised for systems by 3 orders of magnitude or more if extensive terminal solid solutions are present. A closer fit for deliberate normal eutectics is presented in this pragmatic approach if the concentration differences between the terminal phases in eutectics ΔCE [at%] are attributed to them as a square term according to λ2 + · v · ΔCE2 = constant. The data based on this relation still show some scatter but they are grouping to distinct material families e. g. to Pb-, Ag- or Al-based eutectics. The remanent differences are estimated to disappear as soon as the relation is extended by the interdiffusion coefficient D according to \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \lambda ^2 \cdot {\rm v} \cdot \Delta {\rm C}_{\rm E} ^2 \cdot {\rm D} \cong 1.9 \cdot 10^{ - 12} \left\{ {{\rm cm}^{\rm 5} \cdot {\rm s}^{ - {\rm 2}} \cdot {\rm at\% }} \right\} $$\end{document} as is confirmed in cases where reliable D values are available. These findings are in contrast to the current published theories on eutectic solidification. Suggestions are given where the bound- ary conditions have to be altered in order to attain full accord be- tween experiment and theory.

Notes: The thermal stability of a directionally solidified (d. s.) eutectic CoCrCAl-alloy in a thermal gradient is compared to isothermal conditions.A device has been designed and constructed for examination of d. s. eutectics in high temperature gradients at temperatures above 1300 K in different atmospheres and vacuum.Experiments in this gradient furnace show coarsening of the carbide fibres forming the aligned strengthening phase. A microstructural instability resulting from the transformation of carbide fibres has been observed. These effects are discussed in relation to isothermal conditions and their implications on the applicability of the alloy as high temperature gas turbine blade material.
