Description: In the framework of non-destructive-testing advanced seismic imaging techniques have been applied to ultrasonic echo data in order to examine the integrity of an engineered test-barrier designed to be used for sealing an underground nuclear waste disposal site. Synthetic data as well as real multi-receiver ultrasonic data acquired at the test site were processed and imaged using Kirchhoff prestack depth migration reverse time migration (RTM). In general, both methods provide a good image quality as demonstrated by various case studies, however deeper parts within the test barrier containing inclined reflectors were reconstructed more accurately by RTM. In particular, the image quality of a specific target reflector at a depth of 8 m in the test-barrier has been significantly improved compared to previous investigations using synthetic aperture focusing technique, which justifies the considerable computing time of this method.

Notes: Abstract Many methods of material characterization by rheological methods lead to ill-posed problems. The nature of ill-posedness is discussed. In this light, some such new problems appearing in molecular weight characterization of homopolymers as well as in the characterization of size distribution of dispersed phases in polymer blends by rheological techniques are analyzed. The working capability of a nonlinear regularization method is demonstrated with examples of blend rheology. The role of Professor Meissner in motivating the research in the field of ill-posed problems as well as his important contribution to rheology of polymer blends is outlined.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In 1981, the Sea Beam System was installed on RV “Sonne”, it is capable of producing real-time contour strip charts of the ocean floor. The system was tried out in the central Pacific Ocean during the cruise SO-21 in November 1981, when numerous bathymetric recordings of selected major and individual morphological structures of the sea floor were carried out. For the very first time it was possible to record flat deep-sea areas and to make an almost complete survey of a bigger seamount, situated SSW of the main island Hawaii, rising from a depth of 5500 m to 2180 m below sea level. The position of the highest peak is 15° 07′ N, 156° 40.3′ W. This is a report on the new surveying and evaluating method as well as on first topographic and morphological results. A manually compiled contour chart (scale 1∶100000) and two echo-sounding profile series give an impression of the different forms of relief of this previously unknown huge seamount.

Notes: Abstract The linear viscoelastic behavior of polystyrene (PS) and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) blends with PS as the matrix and amounts of PMMA in the range 10–30 wt% was investigated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed a complex morphology which was characterized by the existence of composite particles; the PMMA particles which are enclosed in the PS matrix themselves carry PS inclusions. In order to explain the G* data of these blends a model is presented which consists of a Palierne model for the composite particles and a Palierne model for the whole blend, taking into account composite and neat particles. Simulations show the principal relevance of the assumptions made. Moreover, it is shown that the measurements agree well with the model for the whole measured frequency region and that the fit parameters, the size of the composite particles and the concentration and size of interior particles are in reasonable agreement with data available from TEM.

Notes: Abstract The transient rheological behavior of several thermotropic nematic side-chain liquid crystal polysiloxanes is investigated. A homopolymer with a low-temperature smectic phase and two random copolymers, one consisting of smectogenic and non-smectogenic mesogens, the other one containing two spacers of different lengths, are studied. All systems are of tumbling type and exhibit oscillations in transient shear stress and first normal stress difference. Only the copolymer with mixed spacers shows a temperature-dependent transition from tumbling to flow-aligning within the nematic phase. The rheological response is slightly different for each polymer. The reactive parameter λ was calculated from the period of the oscillations and compared with rheo-NMR results. For all polymers, λ increases with increasing temperature. The sign of λ, obtained from NMR experiments, is positive for the copolymer with mixed spacers and negative for the other two systems, indicating a prolate shape of the first system and oblate shapes of the other two.

Notes: Abstract For the numerical determination of a continuous relaxation time spectrum from rheological data so-called regularization methods are necessary. The regularization method based on Tikhonov regularization and commonly used in rheology assumes the relaxation time spectrum to be smooth. Accordingly, this method is not able to properly resolve spectra containing edges or at least large curvatures as proposed in the literature. In order to reconstruct such spectra a novel edge preserving regularization (EPR) method was developed which extends the properties of the commonly used method. In order to demonstrate the efficiency of EPR it is compared with the commonly used regularization method by means of simulated and experimental data. This reveals that EPR is able to prove whether or not the theoretically predicted edge containing spectra for high-molecular-weight, monodisperse polymers are compatible with experimental data.
