Notes: Abstract A two-dimensional stress analysis for the treatment of periodic edge cracks of unequal length in an elastic half plane under tension is presented. The method is based on the use of selected polynomial mapping approximations derived from a series expansion of the exact mapping function and the application of the Muskhelishvili analysis. The case of edge cracks equally spaced, alternating in length, and normal to the edge is considered in detail. Additional results are presented for the case of oblique cracks of constant spacing and equal depth. The data predicts a critical stage of crack growth based on the physical phenomena of crack closure

Notes: A computational strategy for the evaluation of delamination stresses in multilayered fibre-reinforced composites is presented. The approach uses special inter-laminar shear elements and an iterative procedure in the calculation of out-of-plane stresses. Both regular and singular elements for the free edge are presented. The solutions are carried on by switching between direct matrix solution methods of small systems of equations and an iterative conjugate gradient method. The proposed discretization avoids ill-conditioning problems, modelling difficulties and large computational cost associated with three-dimensional analysis of delamination of holes, cut-outs, joints and areas of complex stress states.

Notes: Abstract Finite element procedures are applied to the modeling, analysis and visualization of experimental moiré data. Smoothing elements are introduced and evaluated with respect to data sparseness and error. A one-dimensional smoothing element is uniquely coupled with the method of principal curves to extract moiré fringe centers. A two-dimensional smoothing element is then used to produce a full-field representation given the fringe locations. The moiré technique is applied to the four-point bend experiment, and the surface-modeling technique is used to obtain displacement and gradient (strain) information.

Notes: Abstract The plane problem of a central crack in a rectangular sheet of orthotropic material is considered. The solution is found by an extension of the modified mapping-collocation technique, originally formulated for plane isotropic analysis. Application of the technique outlined in this paper for plane orthotropic problems to a wider class of geometries and loading is evident. The numerical results indicate a dependence of the orthotropic stress intensity factors on both geometric and elastic constants over a certain parameter range.
