Notes: A new general equation has been developed for the lag time for a dilute diffusant permeating through a one-dimensional membrane in which both diffusivity D and partition coefficient K are dependent on position. The lag time is given by tL=∫h0K(x)[∫x0 R(y)dy][∫hxR(y)dy] ×dx/ ∫h0R(x)dx, where h is the membrane thickness and R(x)=1/[D(x)K(x)]. Formulas derived from this equation include those for: lag time in the presence of an electrical potential gradient; lag time in a multilaminar periodic membrane; and an upper bound for lag time given by tL 〈(h2/ 4Deff), where Deff is the effective diffusivity as deduced from steady-state partitioning and permeability measurements. The lag time is shown to be independent of the direction of diffusion. A computational technique is presented in which the equation for tL is rearranged to a system of two differential equations, which are readily solvable by numerical integration, even when the system has discontinuities in D and K which would increase the difficulty of evaluating the double integral directly.

Notes: [Auszug] For developers of antibacterial products, this century began very much on the wrong foot. The number of pharmaceutical companies chasing antibiotics continued to drop, few genuinely new antibiotics reached the clinic and investors remained lukewarm toward startups in this sector. But, despite ...

Notes: [Auszug] Officials at Sandoz, the generic branch of Novartis of Basel, filed a rare type of lawsuit with the US District Court on September 13. The company wants the court to force the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to rule on—preferably, approve—Omnitrope, its follow-on version of ...

Notes: [Auszug] Despite a muted debate in scientific circles, public health arguments in favor of destroying the remaining stocks of the deadly smallpox virus have finally won over officials of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland. Late in May, WHO representatives from 190 countries approved ...

Notes: [Auszug] From tuberculosis and AIDS to potato blight and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), infectious diseases kill not only people, but whole economies. The links between seemingly far-flung events involving pathogens and their hosts deserve a new kind of scrutiny if we are to deal effectively with ...

Notes: [Auszug] A recent report on the possible effects of GM maize from the US on maize and other native plants in neighboring Mexico points to problematic regulatory and cultural gaps between the two countries, despite a recent move by Mexico to regulate GM crops. Moreover, recommendations in the report, which ...
