    Notes: Abstract The effects of αDifluoromethylornithine (DFMO)2 on survival of human gastric cancer clones were studied in vitro. The responses were dose and time dependent. Treatments which lasted for less than 12 h were cytotoxic at only the highest doses used. The greatest effects on survival were observed only when cells were treated for 48 and 72 h. The effects on the clones produced by such prolonged treatment durations were heterogeneous, with survival values differing by as much as 460%. By contrast, the clonal survival responses to short DFMO treatments (12 h) were very uniform (dose differential of only 19%); however, this uniformity in response could be achieved only by using non-pharmacological doses of DFMO. The heterogeneity in survival responses in the clones might be slightly associated with their levels of intracellular spermidine. Clones with the smallest amounts of intracellular spermidine at the start of treatment were most sensitive to DFMO. However, this association may not hold up with further testing in other gastric cancer clones or when studied in other cancer lines in vitro.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of α-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) on survival, cell kinetics and polyamine levels were studied on two clones of human astrocytoma in vitro. The survival responses were dose and time dependent; and treatments with DFMO which lasted for 72 h resulted in heterogeneous responses with one clone being up to 6 times more sensitive than the other. Shorter treatments produced more uniform killing in the clones. A continuous exposure of the cells to 5 mM DFMO resulted in a rapid decrease in putrescine values in both clones, followed by decreases in the spermidine levels. These effects were closely followed by 148% to 170% increases in cell population doubling times, and a lowering of saturation densities. No clear correlations could be established among baseline polyamine levels and cell kinetics or survival responses to DFMO treatments.

    Notes: Abstract Measurements are presented of the superconducting transition temperatures of concentrated alloys of aluminum containing Ti, V, Cr, Fe, and Co, prepared using an ultrarapid quenching technique. These results extend the concentration range of existing measurements by one or two orders of magnitude. We have analyzed our data using the theories of Kaiser and of Rivier and MacLaughlin and have found that both theories can adequately describe our results for the initial slopes(dT c/dnl)0 and concentration dependence ofT c. In particular, from the theory of Rivier and MacLaughlin, we have found characteristic temperatures for these alloys which are in agreement with those obtained from measurements on other physical parameters.

    Notes: Abstract The velocities and the attenuation of ultrasonic waves have been investigated as a function of temperature (255K≦T≦350K) for the cubic phase of K2SnCl6 which undergoes a structural transition atT c1≃263K. An anomalous decrease of the shear stiffness constantc′=1/2(c 11 −c 12) of about 30% between room temperature andT c1 is found in this cubic high temperature phase whenT c1 is approached from above. Whereas the softening ofc′ extends over a substantial temperature range (about 50 K), the other shear constantc 44 shows only a weak decrease, which is an order of magnitude smaller and restricted toT−T c1≦10 K. NearT c1, a strong increase occurs in the attenuation of the shear acoustic wave propagated along the [111] direction, while such an anomalous attenuation is not observed for the transverse acoustic wave propagated along [100]. Furthermore, atT c1 a hysteresis is detected for the longitudinal sound wave velocityv L[100], which is restricted to the temperature region 262K≦T≦263.5 K. In addition, the room-temperature elastic constants of (NH4)2SiF6 and the hydrostatic pressure derivatives of the elastic constants of K2SnCl6 and (NH4)2SiF6 at room-temperature are presented and discussed in terms of mode softening behaviour.
