Notes: The measurement of stress on machined surfaces using the X-ray diffraction method is discussed. The influence of surface profile on the diffracted peak position is evaluated and considered with respect to its effect on the accuracy of stress measurement.

Notes: Preparation procedures are examined by which the length of amosite fibres may be reduced so that preferred orientation is removed thereby providing samples suitable for quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. Grinding in methyl alcohol produced samples from which X-ray diffraction gave major peak intensities reproducible to within ±2%. X-ray analysis has been carried out on samples of either calcium silicate powder or a lagging material which consists largely of a calcium silicate matrix reinforced with rockwool fibres which contain known additions (≤ 10 wt %) of amosite. The limits of detectability of amosite in both of these matrix materials, based on three diffraction peaks 110; 060:310; 240, have been established. It is concluded that for a mixture of amosite in calcium silicate powder, the limit of detectability is 0.4± 0.1 wt % and for amosite in lagging material, the limit of detectability is 0.2± 0.1 wt %. These are discussed in terms of differences in the physical distribution of the matrix materials.

Notes: Abstract The microstructure of the cast superalloy IN-738 has been analysed after isochronal heat treatments (16 h) within the temperature range 773 to 1467 K. The effect of such heat treatments on the morphology, distribution and volume fraction of bothγ′ and carbide precipitates has been established and correlated with changes in the hardness. These measured hardness changes are discussed in relation to the contributions ofγ′ precipitation hardening and matrix solid solution hardening.

Notes: Abstract A miniaturized disc test has been used to measure load-displacement curves for a 2 1/4Cr1Mo steel, from which are derived values for the Young's modulus of elasticity, yield stress and ultimate tensile strength over the temperature range -196 to 25 °C. The miniaturized test uses disc specimens 3 mm diameter and 0.25 mm thick and a test jig that applies a load via a 1 mm diameter steel ball at a constant displacement rate. The reproducibility of the method has been determined by testing a large number of the 2 1/4Cr1Mo steel specimens at each temperature considered. Comparisons have been made between analytical and empirical methods of evaluating the tensile yield stress and ultimate tensile strength from the measured load-displacement data. In addition, consideration has been given to the total energy to fracture, K*, and the variation with temperature which confirms a transition from low-energy cleavage to high-energy ductile fracture.

Notes: Abstract Combined equilibrium and non-equilibrium grain boundary segregation of solute atoms in dilute ternary alloys is modelled through consideration of site competition between two solutes. Model predictions are made for a low-alloy steel containing boron. The predicted results indicate that the kinetics of phosphorus segregation are dramatically facilitated by quenched-in vacancies, and the magnitude of the segregation, however, is substantially suppressed by the competition of boron with phosphorus for segregation sites, and in turn the phosphorus-induced embrittlement may be alleviated.

Notes: Abstract Experiments have been performed in order to assess quantitatively the rates of fatigue crack propagation in metals. Low stress fatigue tests have been performed on aluminium specimens under conditions of constant load and constant stress. The crack growth rates are found to be proportional to the fourth power of the appropriate stress intensity factors. Methods of processing fatigue test data are briefly discussed.
