Notes: Abstract 23 strains of 19 species ofKluyveromyces are studied to verify if non assimilation of lactose, cellobiose or abutine, maltose, and trehalose depends on system of sugar transport or on absence of hydrolysing enzymatic system in cells. Results show that both phenomenons are present. Taxonomic consequences and phylogenetic implication of these cases are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Low temperature spectrophotometric analysis carried out directly on whole cell pastes reveals either similitudes or differences in the cytochromic absorption spectra of the different yeast species belonging to the genus Kluyveromyces. This analysis confirms the division of the genus into two groups, K1 and K2, and the existence of five different species in the K1 group; these systematic divisions have been previously based on physiological and biochemical criteria. Furthermore the spectrophotometric data sustain a division of the K2 group into three main types, and suggest a phylogenic link between K1 and K2 groups through K. africanus and K. aestuarii.

Notes: Abstract Pichia vini andPichia vini var.melibiosi are compared in respect to their intracellular enzymatic systems concerning cellobiose and melibiose. Both species possess intracellular β glucosidase and α galactosidase with the same characteristics. It seems that the separation between the 2 varieties is not valuable after our results.

Notes: Abstract A study of the genus Saccharomyces by new biocharacters demonstrates indirectly the genotype of each species; intracellular osidases (lactose — maltose — cellobiase — melibiase — invertase — trehalase) and vitamine requirements (biotin — folic acid — inositol — niacine — pantothénate —para-aminobenzoïc acid — pyridoxine — thiamine) reveal some phylogenetic links between the species. It appears that Van der Walt's group I is very homogeneous and must be restricted to only 7 species. The Torulospora group seems very similar to the genus Debaryomyces when vitamine needs and osidases are considered; the relations between the 2 groups are discussed. When other biocharacters are studied (nitrite reductase-immunological properties, etc. ...) the value in the GC content (4–5% lower in Debaryomyces) will be established. These results confirm that intracellular osidases and vitamine needs are very valuable tools for systematic criteria.

Notes: Abstract Intracellular osidases, nitrite reductase, nitrate reductase were found in some species ofDekkera and Brettanomyces. Taxonomical relationships between the 2 genus are discussed. These genus are compared withHanseniaspora andKloeckera.

Notes: Abstract 40 strains of species ofPichia are studied to verify if non assimilation of lactose, cellobiose, maltose, trehalose, sucrose, depends on system of sugar transport or on absence of hydrolysing enzymatic system in cells. Results show that both phenomenons are present. Systematic consequences and phylogenetic implication of these cases are discussed. In particular genusPichia is devided into 2 groups in respect with presence or absence of α glucosidase.

Notes: Abstract Six texts of assimilation used in the taxonomy of yeasts, (lactose, maltose, cellobiose, trehalose, melibiose, sucrose) have been critically tested by the examination of intracellular enzymic systems. The results obtained among the sporogenous species ofSaccharomyces, Kluyveromyces, Pichia, Hansenula, Debaryomyces indicate that cellobiose, lactose, maltose and trehalose tests no longer supply an important value for the speciation, because the number of cryptical osidases is so high.

Notes: Abstract Nitrite and nitrate reductases are were found in numerous species of Pichia. The specific activities of these enzymes are at the same level of activity as in 13 species of yeasts classified in the genus Hansenula. Taxonomic implications are discussed.
