Description: Simulated-service cycle differs from conventional proof-test cycle in that specimen is subjected to sine-wave variation of stress instead of prolonged steady stress. Simulated-service testing is performed at low and high temperatures as well as at room temperatures. (Flaws initiated by severe stresses of proof testing can later develop into leaks during service, thus effectively reducing useful service life.) Method may be useful for commercial thin-wall vessels.

Description: Fracture mechanics properties of 6Al-6V-2Sn titanium in the annealed, solution-treated, and aged condition are presented. Tensile, fracture toughness, cyclic flaw growth, and sustained-load threshold tests were conducted. Both surface flaw and compact tension-specimen geometries were employed. Temperatures and/or environments used were -65 F (220 K) air, ambient, 300 F (422 K) air, and room-temperature air containing 10 and 100% relative humidity.

Description: Fracture toughness and cyclic crack propagation data for Ti-5Al-2.5Sn extra-low interstitial (ELI) castings, 0.51 and 2.54 cm (0.20 and 1.00 in.) thick, at 394, 294, 77, and 20 K (250, 70, -320, and -423 F), are presented. Both surface flaw and compact tension geometries were tested. Comparison is made with other titanium alloys in both wrought and cast forms. Crack propagation resistance is comparable to wrought Ti-5Al-2.5Sn ELI, even with the extremely coarse as-cast grain size encountered.
