Notes: Upper critical magnetic fields Hc2(T) have been measured resistively for the high-temperature (Tc(approximately-greater-than)90 K) superconductors TmBa2Cu3O9−δ and YBa2Cu3O9−δ in applied magnetic fields H up to 9 T. If H at the resistive midpoint is defined as Hc2, then the upper critical field slopes (dHc2/dT)Tc at the superconducting transition temperatures Tc are respectively −2.8 and −1.1 T/K. The Tm-specimen initial slope is apparently the highest yet reported for 90 K superconductors. Extrapolations from this slope, based on standard, three-dimensional, dirty-limit Werthamer, Helfand, Hohenberg, and Maki theory, yield (1) zero-temperature upper critical fields Hc2(T=0)=99–175 T, where the range is determined by the degree of paramagnetic limitation; (2) Hc2(T=77 K)≈36 T, the upper critical field at the boiling point of liquid nitrogen.

Notes: This study reports an experimental investigation of fatigue crack propagation in AlMgSi1-T6 aluminium alloy using both constant and variable load amplitudes. Crack closure was monitored in all tests by the compliance technique using a pin microgauge. For the constant amplitude tests four different stress ratios were analysed. The crack closure parameter U was calculated and related with ΔK and the stress ratio, R. The threshold of the stress intensity factor range, ΔKth , was also obtained. Fatigue crack propagation tests with single tensile peak overloads have been performed at constant load amplitude conditions. The observed transient post overload behaviour is discussed in terms of the overload ratio, ΔK baseline level and R. The crack closure parameter U trends are compared with the crack growth transients. Experimental support is given for the hypothesis that crack closure is the main factor determining the transient crack growth behaviour following overloads on AlMgSi1-T6 alloy for plane stress conditions.

Notes: Crack closure delays the intrinsic mechanisms responsible for crack growth, therefore, it must be considered in fatigue crack growth modelling. The objective of this work is to develop a numerical procedure to predict crack closure induced by plasticity. First the crack closure was experimentally measured on M(T) 6082-T6 aluminium alloy specimens of 3 mm thickness. A pin microgauge was used with the compliance technique. Then different parameters of the numerical procedure were analysed, namely the finite element mesh and the crack propagation scheme. The size of crack-tip elements has an important influence and it is recommended to be of the same order of cyclic plastic zone. Crack-opening levels only 10% lower than experimental results were obtained considering kinematic hardening and two load cycles in each increment.

Notes: The paper presents the results of fatigue life predictions in non-loaded carrying tee and cruciform joints and also longitudinal seams of tubes, obtained with 2D and 3D stress intensity factor solutions. The 2D computational method uses the standard Bueckner weight function solution to obtain the 2D values of the stress magnifying factor MK. In the 3D approach a modified 3D weight function solution was used in conjunction with the Raju and Newman base stress intensity formulation.Comparison of results is shown between the 2D and 3D fatigue life predictions and experimental results of fatigue strength obtained by the authors. Results are also given showing the influence of crack aspect ratio, thickness and the ratio of tube radius to tube thickness.

Notes: The influence of stress state on fatigue crack growth in nickel-base superalloys at high temperature is considered, based on studies in corner crack specimens of Inconel 718 at 600 °C. At high frequency and low R, cycle-dependent trans-granular crack growth occurs along the whole crack front, and growth rates are similar at the surface and within the interior of specimens, maintaining the original quarter-circular shape. For conditions of low frequency and high R, increased crack growth rate per cycle is observed with the crack tunnelling ahead at the centre. A time-dependent intergranular crack propagation mode occurs in the plane strain interior, attributed to an oxidation mechanism, whereas near the surfaces under plane stress, a trans-granular cyclic plasticity mechanism is observed. It is proposed that in addition to frequency and R, that stress state influences the competition between the mechanisms controlling crack growth and the transition between them: plane strain in the interior favouring an oxidation-controlled intergranular cracking mechanism as compared with the plane stress surfaces where cyclic plasticity dominates. An FEM study suggests that this influence of stress state is not associated with variation of ΔK along the crack front.

Notes: Abstract Finely ground powders ofRBa2Cu3O7 − δ (R=Y, Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb) have been mixed at dilute 3%-by-volume concentrations into epoxy matrices which were then allowed to harden in applied magnetic fieldsH A=18 kOe. X-ray diffractometry studies and 4.3 K measurements of supercurrent-induced magnetization hysteresisΔM are interpreted as indicating at least partial alignment of single-crystal-grain c-axes (1) parallel toH A forR=Y, Nd, Sm, Dy, Ho (as earlier found by Farrell et al. forR=Y), and (2) perpendicular toH A forR=Eu, Er, Tm, Yb. With a few exceptions (Y, Sm, Eu) the alignment direction correlates with the sign of the second-order Stevens factorα J of the crystalline electric field Hamiltonian in the manner suggested by Livingston et al. For the best aligned specimens (Ho, Dy) critical current densitiesJ c (4.3 K, 5 kOe) for individual grains are estimated fromΔM and the Bean model to be of order 107 A/cm2 for the measuring fieldH parallel to the original alignment fieldH A, and of order 106 A/cm2 forH perpendicular toH A.
