Notes: The evolution of yeasts and lactic acid bacteria was examined during two methods of cider making: the traditional employed unwashed apples of different varieties and the modified used a sole washed acidic apple variety with temperature control during the cider making process. The alcoholic fermentation was carried out mainly by Kloeckera apiculata and Sacharomyces cerevisiae species, and their distributions were similar in the two methods. In the traditional, the malolactic fermentation proceeded at the same time as alcoholic fermentation and the “piqure lactique” occurred. In the modified method, no malolactic fermentation took place. In all musts, a fundamentally heterofermentative lactic flora was found, with Lactobacillus species most abundant in the traditional process.

Notes: Summary Anonymous DNA probes mapping to human chromosome 16 and the distal region of the human X chromosome were isolated from a genomic library constructed using lambda EMBL3 and DNA from a mouse/human hybrid. The hybrid cell contained a der(16)t(X;16)(q26;q24) as the only human chromosome. Fifty clones were isolated using total human DNA as a hybridisation probe. Forty six clones contained single copy DNA in addition to the repetitive DNA. Pre-reassociation with sonicated human DNA was used to map these clones by a combination of Southern blot analysis of a hybrid cell panel containing fragments of chromosomes 16 and X and in situ hybridisation. One clone mapped to 16pter →16p13.11, one clone to 16p13.3→16p13.11, four clones to 16p13.3→16p13.13, two clones to 16p13.13→16p13.11, one clone to 16p13.11, seven clones to 16p13.11→16q12 or 16q13, four clones to 16q12 or 16q13, three clones to 16q13→16q22.1, four clones to 16q22.105→16q24, and nineteen clones to Xq26→Xqter. Two clones mapping to 16p13 detected RFLPs. VK5 (D16S94) detected an MspI RFLP, PIC 0.37. VK20 (D16S96) detected a TaqI RFLP, PIC 0.37 and two MspI RFLPs, PIC 0.30 and 0.50. The adult polycystic kidney disease locus (PKD1) has also been assigned to 16p13. The RFLPs described will be of use for genetic counselling and in the isolation of the PKD1 gene. Similarly, the X clones may be used to isolate RFLPs for genetic counselling and the isolation of genes for the many diseases that map to Xq26→qter.

Description: The work presented here is the result of applying PetroMar software, elaborated at the Marine Meteorology Centre belonging to the Institute of Meteorology of Cuba in order to perform retroanalysis and prediction of oil slick tracks at sea. Programming was executed in MatLab (version 7.0) tightly coupled to geographical feature of study region through a convenient GIS and subroutines set named BatTri, used to design the mathematical 1 dominion. This application was implemented for deep waters surrounding six prefixed coastal zones in Cuban archipelago, but it may be applied to any region in the world. Computing is made on a finite elements grid using a fourth order Runge - Kunta scheme, which offer operational advantages and an efficient integration. The main equations are based on the Lagrangian method for tracking a particle, which is quite simple. Results validation was performed with drifters belonging to NOAA´s oceanographic service, accomplishing the last phase of the project. These may be very useful for institutions and companies, like fishering, tourism, and Disaster Management Offices, etc.

Description: The pinning of domain walls in ferromagnetic (F) wires is one possible technique for the creation of a solid state magnetic memory. Such a system has been under consideration for some time but one of the main limitations is the control of, and non-uniformity of the domain wall pinning. Techniques such as the lithographic definition of notches and steps in the substrate have had some success in creating local pins but have the disadvantage of being expensive to fabricate and the reproducibility of the domain wall pinning strength is limited. In this letter, we report on an alternative strategy to create pins of reproducible strength using crossed ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic (AF) wires such that exchange bias can be introduced at the crossing points. Such a system has the advantage of ease of fabrication and creating domain wall pins of controlled strength by varying the width of the AF wire. We have achieved domain wall pinning field strengths of up to 37 Oe in a system where the AF wire is deposited above the F wire which is comparable to the values achieved using notches.

Description: Graphical simulation is a cost-effective solution for developing and testing robots and their control systems. The availability of various high-performance workstations makes these systems feasible. Simulation offers preliminary testing of systems before their actual realizations, and it provides a framework for developing new control and planning algorithms. On the other hand, these simulation systems have to have the capability of incorporating various knowledge-based system components, e.g., task planners, representation formalisms, etc. They also should have an appropriate user interface, which makes possible the creation and control of simulation models. ROBOSIM was developed jointly by MSFC and Vanderbilt University, first in a VAX environment. Recently, the system has been ported to an HP-9000 workstation equipped with an SRX graphics accelerator. The user interface of the system now contains a menu- and icon-based facility, as well as the original ROBOSIM language. The system is also coupled to a symbolic computing system based on Common Lisp, where knowledge-based functionalities are implemented. The knowledge-based layer uses various representation and reasoning facilities for programming and testing the control systems of robots.
