Notes: Optimal physical parameters of the solid state fermentation of rice to produce anka pigments and their influences on pigment production were studied. Anka pigment production, especially that of two orange anka pigments (rubropunctatin and monascorubrin), was highly sensitive to the moisture content of the rice substrate. Optimal initial moisture content of rice substrate was 24%. Pigment formation was retarded when extra water was added to the inoculated substrate during cultivation. High filling amount of rice substrate in a flask was unfavorable for pigment production. Loosening of the inoculated substrate once a day enhanced pigment production. With a high carbon dioxide level in the incubator, no orange pigments were detected. Freeze drying the fermented material produced a superior yield of anka pigments, while oven drying at 50°C for 24 h was a reasonable alternative.
Notes: Summary The level of naturally occurring tocopherols in blood serum of 88 preterm infants, aged from birth to 2 years, was determined by the high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method using fluorescence detection. In 11 cases, patients were assayed for their tocopherol status in longitudinal studies, receiving known amounts of vitamin E supplements orally and/or parenterally. No correlation was found between serum alpha-tocopherol level and gestational age nor birth weight. All preterm infants receiving the vitamin E preparation showed an average serum tocopherol content of more than 0.5 mg/100 ml. The highest alpha-tocopherol concentration registered during vitamin E therapy was 3.28 mg/100 ml. Infusion of Intralipid, a product derived from fractionated soybean oil, caused a significant increase of gamma- and delta-tocopherol in blood serum. The half-life of delta-tocopherol in serum was calculated to be about 24 hours.

Notes: Summary Anka is withMonascus sp. fermented rice, which shows a purplish red color. On rice grainsMonascus purpureus DSM 1379 synthesized four anka pigments. Through extraction of anka with n-hexane and methanol in succession and through repeated crystallizations from absolute ethanol anka pigments were crystallized into two fractions: organge anka pigments (rubropunctatin and monascorubrin) and yellow anka pigments (monascin and ankaflavin). The treatment of two organge anka pigments with aqueous ammonia solution gave red nitrogen analogues (rubropunctatamine and monascorubramine). The above six pigments were separated into each pigment by two dimensional thin layer chromatography (TLC) or high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). HPLC-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-APCI-MS-MS) and direct probe mass spectrometry (MS) were used to identify these pigments. HPLC-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) was used to determine UV-VIS spectra of pigments. Pigments were analyzed with HPLC under the following conditions: C18 column, acetonitrile/water (80∶20, v/v), 0.5 mL min−1, 233 nm.
