    Notes: Abstract In this paper we consider the optimization of a quadratic function subject to a linearly bounded mixed integer constraint set. We develop two types of piecewise affine convex underestimating functions for the objective function. These are used in a branch and bound algorithm for solving the original problem. We show finite convergence to a near optimal solution for this algorithm. We illustrate the algorithm with a small numerical example. Finally we discuss some modifications of the algorithm and address the question of extending the problem to include quadratic constraints.

    Notes: Abstract When the follower's optimality conditions are both necessary and sufficient, the nonlinear bilevel program can be solved as a global optimization problem. The complementary slackness condition is usually the complicating constraint in such problems. We show how this constraint can be replaced by an equivalent system of convex and separable quadratic constraints. In this paper, we propose different methods for finding the global minimum of a concave function subject to quadratic separable constraints. The first method is of the branch and bound type, and is based on rectangular partitions to obtain upper and lower bounds. Convergence of the proposed algorithm is also proved. For computational purposes, different procedures that accelerate the convergence of the proposed algorithm are analysed. The second method is based on piecewise linear approximations of the constraint functions. When the constraints are convex, the problem is reduced to global concave minimization subject to linear constraints. In the case of non-convex constraints, we use zero-one integer variables to linearize the constraints. The number of integer variables depends only on the concave parts of the constraint functions.

    Notes: Abstract A large proportion of global natural rubber production takes place in Southeast Asia. The majority of this rubber is produced by smallholders. Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia are the three principal countries involved. In Malaysia and Indonesia the smallholder sector accounts for 72% and 84% of total rubber production respectively. In other countries rubber plays a significant role on a more local basis. Imperata is a serious problem for the smallholder rubber farmer in most of Southeast Asia in three respects: the high cost (labour and/or capital) of opening Imperata-infested land, its competitive effect on rubber and annual intercrops, and the fire hazard that it poses during the dry season as a major source of combustible material. The costs of Imperata to smallholders are substantial in terms of a direct loss through fire and revenue foregone or delayed as a result of competition. Most smallholders intercrop their rubber during the first 1–3 years after planting it, and during this period Imperata is reasonably well controlled. Intercropping is only feasible for a limited period because of limited soil fertility and/or the shading effect of the rubber trees. After intercropping, Imperata tends to establish itself for a few years until it too is shaded out by the rubber. This is the problem period, during which farmers practise only limited weed management, if any. A large amount of research has been done on methods of controlling Imperata, but the recommended methods have been generally spurned by smallholders unless they have been given subsidies to apply them. This paper describes the precise nature of the Imperata problem, with reference to some of the smallholder rubber-based farming systems within Southeast Asia; the different Imperata control strategies currently practised in these farming systems; and some of the constraints on the adoption of currently and recently recommended practices. It then proposes a ten-point agenda for research on Imperata control, including two ways in which current research programmes could be usefully reoriented: first, they need to take greater account of smallholder farming systems and constraints; and second they should shift their emphasis from single-method to integrated control systems.

    Notes: Abstract The problem of maximizing the sum of certain composite functions, where each term is the composition of a convex decreasing function, bounded from below, with a convex function having compact level sets arises in certain single facility location problems with gauge distance functions. We show that this problem is equivalent to a convex maximization problem over a compact convex set and develop a specialized polyhedral annexation procedure to find a global solution for the case when the inside function is a polyhedral norm. As the problem was solved recently only for local solutions, this paper offers an algorithm for finding a global solution. Implementation and testing are not treated in this short communication.

    Notes: Abstract We present an algorithm for finding approximate global solutions to quadratically constrained quadratic programming problems. The method is based on outer approximation (linearization) and branch and bound with linear programming subproblems. When the feasible set is non-convex, the infinite process can be terminated with an approximate (possibly infeasible) optimal solution. We provide error bounds that can be used to ensure stopping within a prespecified feasibility tolerance. A numerical example illustrates the procedure. Computational experiments with an implementation of the procedure are reported on bilinearly constrained test problems with up to sixteen decision variables and eight constraints.

    Description: During the experiments carried out on the monitoring and the study of fish defrosting by an ultrasonic technique, we have difficulties in detecting the beginning of the thawing which is an important criterion of fish quality control. To address this problem, we use the Singular Value Decomposition method (SVD) which is a mathematical tool that permits to separate the high and low energies of an histogram. The image representing low energy signals indicates the start of the thawing by showing an echo that was hidden in the original image for cod fish. Using transducers for central frequencies above 500 kHz the observed results are not very good. Therefore, this method is suitable for fish which fat content is medium or low.
