Notes: The influence of flow hydrodynamics is studied numerically on the operating parameters of short-dwell paper coaters. The flow in and around a coater is numerically simulated using the method of finite difference, body-fitted numerical grid generation, and a new computational technique for the solution of viscous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The result reflect a simultaneous solution of the problem in and around the coating pond. The computational strategy includes the treatment of mathematical singularities at dynamic and static contact points, and the boundary conditions at free surfaces with stagnation points. A dynamic contact angle is calculated simultaneously with the solution. Results include shear rate, centrifugal force, pressure, and velocity distributions in the flow field related to the operating parameters of the coater, the quality of product, and the efficiency of operation.

Notes: Parameters of wetting dry fibers with non-Newtonian liquids are studied experimentally. Rheological tests show that seven of the 13 test liquids adhere to Newtonian behavior with a wide range of viscosities 3 〈 μ 〈 30,000 mPa·s. The other six liquids show shear-thinning behavior with different flow indices. Some of the liquids exhibited viscoelastic behavior. Diameters of the fibers are in the range 0.033 〈 D 〈 0.071 cm. Experimental measurements cover contact angles, interfacial depths and diameters, as well as the critical wetting speed of entraining visible small air bubbles in the liquid volume. Dynamic contact angles are strong functions of the apparent viscosity of the liquid at the particular wetting speed regardless of whether the liquid is Newtonian or non-Newtonian. Higher values of contact angles correspond to wetting of fiber with larger diameter for less viscous liquid are generally higher than those for Newtonian liquids. Depressions created in the surface of different test liquids can be classified into three different scales, corresponding to three scales of liquid viscosities.

Notes: The work of Landau and Levich (1942) initiated detailed theoretical and experimental study of the flow of the thin liquid film entrained by a steady withdrawal of a sheet from a bath of liquid. The existing theories, which differ considerably, are all based on linearization of the problem and give single relationships between film thickness T and a capillary number Ca. The present paper demonstrates theoretically that differing physical properties for each liquid result not in a single curve but in a family of curves for T vs. Ca and that the complete set of previous experimental work required and fitted the family of curves. Previous theories could fit only a portion of this experimental data. The solution requires a nonlinear theory to include inertial terms and two-dimensional flow and thus treat the parameter of liquid physical properties. This is obtained by applying a nonlinear approach based on the direct method of Galerkin. Owing to the nonlinear character of the solution, the new theory has the advantage of accurately determining the shape and size of the upper meniscus profile. Excellent agreement with the complete set of available experimental data is obtained.

Notes: The use of the velocity-pressure formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations for the numerical solution of fluid flow problems is favoured for free-surface problems, more involved flow configurations, and three-dimensional flows. Many engineering problems involve such features in addition to strong inertial effects. The computational instabilities arising from central-difference schemes for the convective terms of the governing equations impose serious limitations on the range of Reynolds numbers that can be investigated by the numerical method. Solutions for higher Reynolds numbers Re 〉 1000 could be reached using upwind-difference schemes. A comparative study of both schemes using a method based on the primitive variables is presented. The comparison is made for the model problem of the driven flow in a square cavity. Using a central scheme stable solutions of the pressure and velocity fields were obtained for Reynolds numbers up to 5000. The streamfunction and vorticity fields were calculated from the resulting velocity field and compared with previous solutions. It is concluded that total upwind differencing results in a considerable change in the flow pattern due to the false diffusion. For practical calculations, by a proper choice of a small amount of partial upwind differencing the vorticity diffusion near the walls and the global features of the solutions are not sigificantly altered.
