Conclusions 1. The main possibility of adopting a restricted separation space when recovering solid material from a gas flow with limited contact time between solid and gas phases, as compared with the time of settling-out of solid particles in an air-fountain type of separator, has been demonstrated. 2. A formula for determining the height of the solid particle fountain is given. 3. The pattern of the motion of solid particles in a separator having restricted separation space has been investigated. The degree of collection of solid particles achieved was 78% with a pneumatic transport mixture ratio of 2.75 kg/kg, and 92% with a ratio of 11 kg/kg. 4. The operation of different baffle arrangements to reduce carry-over of the solid phase from the separator has been investigated. The highest degree of collection, at 98.6% to 99.8%,was achieved using a “cylinder” type baffle arrangement.
