    Notes: Abstract Few-unit recordings were obtained using metal microelectrodes. Separation into single-unit spike trains was based on differences in spike amplitude and spike waveform. For that purpose a hardware microprocessor based spike waveform analyser was designed and built. Spikes are filtered by four matched filters and filter outputs at the moments of spike occurrence are read by a computer and used for off-line separation and spike waveform reconstruction. Thirthy-one double unit recordings were obtained and correlation between the separated spike trains was determined. After stimulus correction correlation remained in only 8 of the double unit records. It appeared that in most cases this neural correlation was stimulus dependent. Continuous noise stimulation resulted in the strongest neural correlation remaining after correction for stimulus coupling, stimulation with 48 ms duration tonepips presented once per second generally did not result in a significant neural correlation after the correction procedure for stimulus lock. The usefulness of the additive model for neural correlation and the correction procedure based thereupon is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Crosscorrelation analysis of simultaneously recorded activity of pairs of neurons is a common tool to infer functional neural connectivity. The adequacy of crosscorrelation procedures to detect and estimate neural connectivity has been investigated by means of computer simulations of small networks composed of fairly realistic modelneurons. If the mean interval of neural firings is much larger than the duration of postsynaptic potentials, which will be the case in many central brain areas excitatory connections are easier to detect than inhibitory ones. On the other hand, inhibitory connections are revealed better if the mean firing interval is much smaller than post-synaptic potential duration. In general the effects of external stimuli and the effects of neural connectivity do not add linearly. Furthermore, neurons may exhibit a certain degree of timelock to the stimulus. For these reasons the commonly applied “shift predictor” procedure to separate stimulus and neural effects appears to be of limited value. In case of parallel direct and indirect neural pathways between two neurons crosscorrelation analysis does not estimate the direct connection but instead an effective connectivity, which reflects the combined influences of the parallel pathways.

    Notes: Abstract Recent developments in digital display technology have opened a wide range of possibilities for biomedical imaging. The opportunity to use colour is an important feature of video-display systems in clinical practice. Colour coding of biomedical data is a complex matter, which, however, may lead in many cases to an enhanced diagnostic interpretation of the images displayed. In the paper procedures for colour mapping are described and illustrated by three practical examples in the fields of scintigraphy, electrocardiography and neurophysiology. The results show an extensive applicability for colour representation of biomedical data, provided the mapping procedures are carefully selected.
