Notes: In this paper, we analyze power in five modes of social organization, as can be found in Adam Smith's An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. Specifically, we analyze Smith's presentations of pre-capital accumulation and private appropriation of land; feudalism; a system of perfect liberty; late eighteenth century England; and the American colonies, and examine how wealth power, monopoly power, employer power, and political power is manifested within each. We conclude, as does Smith, that modes of social organization can neither be found nor analyzed separately from power.

Notes: The passionate debate, among policy makers and theorists, over the appropriateness of protecting infant industries in developing countries was one of greatest interest in the economic literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. On one side of the argument are the British advocates of free trade, concocting subtle arguments to neutralize the boisterous aspirations of insubordinate colonies (and former colonies) yearning for independence; on the other, the standard-bearers of Economic Nationalism, responding fiercely to the incessant firing of classical contentions. Such reaction to laissez-faire economics gave birth to a corpus of ideas which was to form the core intellectual bulwark of commercial protectionism and cultural freedom. Discusses and comments on the conflicting views which animated the confrontation through examination of the major works of the most illustrious exponents of both factions.

Notes: During the first decades of the 20th century, German Reformer Silvio Gesell (1862-1930) championed with a certain success the reforming wave of the epoch by complementing ingenious solutions to some of the most important economic issues of his time with theoretical insights that were as radical as they were penetrating. The purpose of this paper is to offer an introduction to such intuitions, whose validity had been recognized even by a few distinguished academics of the 1930s, but which, owing to the extreme complications that eventually mired German intellectual production in its quasi-entirety before WWII, failed to preserve the deserved consideration, however slight, they had earned when first formulated. A reappraisal of Gesell's contributions, considering the importance of his main themes, may be worthwhile, all the more so as these deal with questions unsolved to this day.

Notes: Examines the role of institutional change in post-Communist transition, notably in the sequence of transformations. Explains the reasons for the strategic role of institutional change, the major elements of such change, a rationale explaining why, to create maximum effect, these changes should occur early in the sequencing process, prior to liberalization, marketization, stabilization or economic restructuring and substantial privatization. Theoretical analysis is employed with supporting empirical illustrations.

Notes: After a clarification of definitions important in methodological discussions, a brief history of early methodological thought in economics and political economy is presented. The development of "orthodox" methodology is traced, and the fundamental assumptions underlying neoclassical economic methodology are enumerated. Philosophical positions - both critical of and sympathetic to the orthodox assumptions - are presented. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of various heterodox positions are surveyed. Throughout the paper, methodological justifications for the emphasis on primarily deductive, complex mathematical models in contemporary economics as practiced in the USA - especially in light of the relevance and importance of primarily verbal, interpretive methodologies in the realm of applied and policy-oriented economics - are examined.

Notes: This paper examines the origins and the institutions, strategies, and policies of the shift to transition toward capitalism and democracy as the aspired system of political economy of Boris Yeltsin and his supporters in Russia in the early 1990s. The paper argues that this process of radical change is very "rocky", and that its outcome is not yet clear. The shift from socialist democratization under Gorbachev to capitalist transformation under Yeltsin had multiple origins; but a core element in the process was the very likely abandonment of the ancien régime by party, state, and industrial élites themselves. Key factors in the transition in the early 1990s were: continuity amid change in political leadership and governance institutions; the absence of a developed political party system that could have united Yeltsin and the new Russian parliament; and the underlying socioeconomic conditions and attitudes of the Russian population.
