Summary For centuries, roe deer populations have seemed to utilize the capacity of their environment to the absolute limit. This may be seeninter alia in the fact that body weights have in the long term remained unchanged and low in spite of the animals' physiological potential. Entrofication of the landscape, actively by fertilizer application, passively by nitrogen emissions, and reduced supply of nutritive substances as a result of grazing have improved this capacity in the past decades. Damage from emissions, however caused — emissions containing nitrogen are in this connection not unimportant — lead to breaks in the tree canopy and reduced competition in the plant layer at ground level. The planteaters of the vegetation layer, including roe deer, follow this additional extension of the environmentel capacity. The pressure of grazing on those species of plant which continue to be preferred, therefore, increases still further. Efforts to change from confierous to largely deciduous woodland are thereby also made more difficult. The cloven-hoofed game “explosion” is, however, not only the cause of bark-gnawing but also the result of entrofication and damage from atmospheric pollution.
