Notes: Abstract In this paper, the interaction of radiation and forced convection in simultaneously developing laminar flow through semicircular and right triangular ducts with isothermal non-black wall is investigated. The three dimensional momentum and energy equations are discretized by the method of lines and solved numerically by the marching method. The method of momentum is employed to consider the radiation contribution which models the radiation in the partial differential equation, instead of the partial integrodifferential equation. The effects of three major parameters, radiation-conduction parameter,N, optical thickness, τ b , and wall emissivity, ε w , in the entry region of these irregular geometry ducts are discussed. The numerical results in terms of the variation of the bulk temperature and the mean Nusselt number indicate that the thermal radiation not only enhances the heat transfer rate, but also changes the characteristics of the convective heat transfer. Furthermore, the results compare very well with the available data published in the open literature for the pure convective case.

Notes: Abstract Convective heat transfer properties of a hydrodynamically fully developed flow, thermally developing flow in a parallel-flow, and noncircular duct heat exchanger passage subject to an insulated boundary condition are analyzed. In fact, due to the complexity of the geometry, this paper investigates in detail heat transfer in a parallel-flow heat exchanger of equilateral-triangular and semicircular ducts. The developing temperature field in each passage in these geometries is obtained seminumerically from solving the energy equation employing the method of lines (MOL). According to this method, the energy equation is reformulated by a system of a first-order differential equation controlling the temperature along each line. Temperature distribution in the thermal entrance region is obtained utilizing sixteen lines or less, in the cross-stream direction of the duct. The grid pattern chosen provides drastic savings in computing time. The representative curves illustrating the isotherms, the variation of the bulk temperature for each passage, and the total Nusselt number with pertinent parameters in the entire thermal entry region are plotted. It is found that the log mean temperature difference (ΔT LM), the heat exchanger effectiveness, and the number of transfer units (NTU) are 0.247, 0.490, and 1.985 for semicircular ducts, and 0.346, 0.466, and 1.345 for equilateral-triangular ducts.

Notes: Abstract Fully developed laminar mixed convective flow and heat transfer in a vertical helicoidal pipe with finite pitch is studied numerically in this paper. The centrifugal, buoyancy, and torsion forces created by the pitch of the helix are considered. The thermal boundary conditions are uniform heat flux axially and uniform wall temperature peripherally. The velocity, the temperature profiles, the friction factor, and the Nusselt number are obtained. The results indicate that torsion can significantly change the axial and secondary flow patterns and temperature distributions in the helicoidal pipe with a fixed pressure gradient. Torsion can also remarkably affect the flow rate, the friction factor, and the Nusselt number. However, at a fixed Dean number, there is only slight difference in the Nusselt numbers of the upward and downward flow.

Notes: Abstract This study presents a numerical solution to convective heat transfer in laminar flow in the thermal entrance region of a rectangular duct with two indented sides. The flow is considered to be hydrodynamically fully developed and thermally developing laminar flow of incompressible, Newtonian fluids with constant thermal properties. The ducts are subjected to a constant wall temperature. An algebraic technique is used to discretize the solution domain and a boundary-fitted coordinate system is numerically developed. The governing equations in the boundary-fitted coordinates are solved by the control volume-based finite difference method. Distribution of the bulk temperature and the Nusselt number along the direction of flow is calculated and presented graphically. Also calculated is the thermal entrance length of the rectangular ducts with two indented sides. The parameters, such as the friction factor times the Reynolds number, and the Nusselt number for the fully developed flow and thermally developing flow are obtained.

Description: In this paper, the analysis on secondary flow in curved elliptic pipes of Topakoglu & Ebadian (1985) has been extended up to a point where the rate-of-flow expression is obtained for any value of flatness ratio of the elliptic cross-section. The analysis is based on the double expansion method of Topakoglu (1967). Therefore, no approximation is involved in any step other than the natural limitation of the finite number of calculated terms of the expansions. The obtained results are systematically plotted against the curvature of centreline of the curved pipe for different values of Reynolds number. © 1987, Cambridge University Press. Description: A literature survey (Berger, Talbot & Yao 1983) indicates that laminar viscous flow in curved pipes has been extensively investigated. Most of the existing analytical results deal with the case of circular cross-section. The important studies dealing with elliptical cross-sections are mainly due to Thomas & Walters (1965) and Srivastava (1980). The analysis of Thomas & Walters is based on Dean’s (1927, 1928) approach in which the simplified forms of the momentum and continuity equations have been used. The analysis of Srivastava is essentially a seminumerical approach, in which no explicit expressions have been presented. In this paper, using elliptic coordinates and following the unsimplified formulation of Topakoglu (1967), the flow in a curved pipe of elliptical cross-section is analysed. Two different geometries have been considered: (i) with the major axis of the ellipse placed in the direction of the radius of curvature; and (ii) with the minor axis of the ellipse placed in the direction of the radius of curvature. For both cases explicit expressions for the first term of the expansion of the secondary-flow stream function as a function of the ellipticity ratio of the elliptic section have been obtained. After selecting a typical numerical value for the ellipticity ratio, the secondary-flow streamlines are plotted. The results are compared with that of Thomas & Walters. The remaining terms of the expansion of the flow field are not included, but they will be analysed in a future paper. © 1985, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

Description: We finished the material development of Level 1, Level 2 and most of Level 3. We created three new galleries, one of streaming videos enabling the user to select his/her appropriate speed of Internet connectivity for better performance. The second gallery on NASA's X-series aircraft and the third is on F-series aircraft. We also completed the placement and activation of all thirteen kiosks. We added one more kiosk over the number suggested in the proposal at Baker Aviation High School - a Dade County Public School for special aviation programs. We felt that the goals of this school matched ALLSTAR's goals and that the placement of the kiosk would better help the local students become interested in the Aviation and Aeronautics field. We continue to work on the development of our "Teacher Resource Guide to ALLSTAR material" in which we tied our material into the national and Florida State standards. We finished the Florida Sunshine State standards, getting positive feedback from local and other educators who use the material on a regular basis. We had another successful workshop on October 29', 1997. We introduced the ALLSTAR website and kiosk to about twenty science and history teachers from Dade County Public Schools (DCPS). Most teachers were from middle schools, although we had some from elementary schools also. We provided several demonstrations of the ALLSTAR material to local schools in the Dade County Public Schools (DCPS) system. We used the ALLSTAR material with FIU's summer immersion program for FLAME students. This program includes a high number of minority students interested in science and engineering. We also presented the material at National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and National Congress on Aviation and Space Education (NCASE) conferences and will be presenting the material at the Southeast Florida Aviation Consortium (SEFAC). We provided two on-site workshops in the NSTA conference with total attended of about 70 teachers. The BBS was converted to an on-line discussion forum with a unique section on Blacks in Aviation. Prime Technologies coordinated with NASA LARC and the Teacher Resource Centers (TRCs) for scale-up of ALLSTAR and performed live demonstrations of the software in schools and at conventions.
