    Sea salt as an ice core proxy for past sea ice extent: a process-based model study (2014)

    Description: Sea ice is a reflection of, and a feedback on the Earth's climate. We explore here, using a global atmospheric chemistry-transport model, the use of sea salt in Antarctic ice cores to obtain continuous long-term, regionally-integrated records of past sea ice extent, synchronous with ice core records of climate. The model includes the production, transport and deposition of sea salt aerosol from the open ocean and ‘blowing snow’ on sea ice. Under current climate conditions, we find that meteorology, not sea ice extent, is the dominant control on the atmospheric concentration of sea salt reaching coastal- and continental Antarctic sites on inter-annual timescales. However, through a series of idealised sensitivity experiments, we demonstrate that sea salt has potential as a proxy for larger changes in sea ice extent (e.g. glacial-interglacial). Treating much of the sea ice under glacial conditions as a source of salty blowing snow, we demonstrate that the increase in sea ice extent alone (without changing the meteorology) could drive, for instance, a 68% increase in atmospheric sea salt concentration at the site of the Dome C ice core, which exhibits an approximate two-fold glacial increase in sea salt flux. We also show how the sensitivity of this potential proxy decreases towards glacial sea ice extent—the basis of an explanation previously proposed for the lag observed between changes in sea salt flux and δD (an ice core proxy for air temperature) at glacial terminations. The data thereby permit simultaneous changes in sea ice extent and climate.

    Measurement of solar wind electron density and temperature in the shocked region of Venus and the density and temperature of photoelectrons within the ionosphere of Venus (2016)

    Description: Presented herein are measurements of the solar wind electron number density and temperature near and within the bow shock of Venus. The measurements were made by the Pioneer Venus mission Orbiter Retarding Potential Analyzer (ORPA) operating in its supra-thermal electron mode. The measurements are essentially point measurements. The spacecraft travels approximately 0.8 km during the 0.1 s time interval required to record a single I-V curve. The dual measurement of a density and temperature is obtained from one sweep by least-square fitting a mathematical Maxwellian expression to the I-V curve. The distance between successive measurements is approximately 100 km. In many orbits, when the spacecraft is crossing or traveling within the bow shock, the derived densities and temperatures (HDHT) are large, densities of the order of 100 cm-3 and temperatures of the order of several hundred eV. We interpret these HDHT measurements as measurements in regions where the large, directed kinetic energy of the solar wind ions is being degraded into randomized, more thermal-like energy distributions of the electrons and ions through wave-particle interactions. The HDHT values define the electron energy distribution in the limited energy interval 0 to 50 eV. We assume the underlying electron flux distributions are flat topped like those measured in the Earth's bow shock. We also report the density and temperature of solar EUV produced photoelectron energy distributions measured within the ionosphere.

    Long-term impacts of dam construction on plant succession and survival of an endangered species (2016)

    Description: This study was conducted to determine what changes have occurred in an arid alluvial riparian shrub habitat in the upper Santa Ana River basin over a 20+-yr period beginning prior to the completion of the Seven Oaks Dam in San Bernardino County, California and continuing until 8 yr after the completion of the dam in 2000 to assess the implications any changes may have on the persistence of the short-lived Santa Ana River Woolly Star ( Eriastrum densifolium ssp. sanctorum , Polemoniaceae). Small-scale habitat changes were determined by comparing non-native annual plant data from 1989 to 2008. Large-scale habitat changes were determined by comparing perennial plant data from 1987 to 2008. The results of this study suggest that annual species, lichen crust, and dead shrubs are increasing, and that bare ground and live shrubs are decreasing. The older sites are also increasing in annual grass cover. Successional changes have occurred since the last significant flood event in 1969 although these changes are gradual and on a continuum, precluding a sharp distinction between different age stages. The data support previously predicted rates of succession indicating ultimate maturity within at least 100 yr. The continuation of these habitat changes will likely contribute to the decline of the Woolly Star population, particularly during future drought periods.

    Crystal structures of Escherichia coli exonuclease I in complex with single-stranded DNA provide insights into the mechanism of processive digestion (2013)

    Description: Escherichia coli Exonuclease I (ExoI) digests single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) in the 3'-5' direction in a highly processive manner. The crystal structure of ExoI, determined previously in the absence of DNA, revealed a C-shaped molecule with three domains that form a central positively charged groove. The active site is at the bottom of the groove, while an extended loop, proposed to encircle the DNA, crosses over the groove. Here, we present crystal structures of ExoI in complex with four different ssDNA substrates. The structures all have the ssDNA bound in essentially the predicted manner, with the 3'-end in the active site and the downstream end under the crossover loop. The central nucleotides of the DNA form a prominent bulge that contacts the SH3-like domain, while the nucleotides at the downstream end of the DNA form extensive interactions with an ‘anchor’ site. Seven of the complexes are similar to one another, but one has the ssDNA bound in a distinct conformation. The highest-resolution structure, determined at 1.95 Å, reveals an Mg 2+ ion bound to the scissile phosphate in a position corresponding to Mg B in related two-metal nucleases. The structures provide new insights into the mechanism of processive digestion that will be discussed.
