Description / Table of Contents: This book explains the fundamentals of computational physics and describes the techniques that every physicist should know, such as finite difference methods, numerical quadrature, and the fast Fourier transform. The book offers a complete introduction to the topic at the undergraduate level, and is also suitable for the advanced student or researcher. The book begins with an introduction to Python, then moves on to a step-by-step description of the techniques of computational physics, with examples ranging from simple mechanics problems to complex calculations in quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, statistical mechanics, and more

Description: Protein ubiquitination regulates important innate immune responses. The discovery of viruses encoding deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) suggests they remove ubiquitin to evade ubiquitin-dependent antiviral responses; however, this has never been conclusively demonstrated in virus-infected cells. Arteriviruses are economically important positive-stranded RNA viruses that encode an ovarian tumor (OTU) domain DUB known...

Description: Lymphatic metastasis contributes to mortality from solid tumors. Whether metastasizing cancer cells reach lymph nodes via intratumor lymphatic vessels is unknown. Here, we examine functional lymphatics associated with mouse tumors expressing normal or elevated levels of vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C), a molecule that stimulates lymphangiogenesis. Although VEGF-C overexpression increased lymphatic surface area in the tumor margin and lymphatic metastasis, these tumors contained no functional lymphatics, as assessed by four independent functional assays and immunohistochemical staining. These findings suggest that the functional lymphatics in the tumor margin alone are sufficient for lymphatic metastasis and should be targeted therapeutically.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Padera, Timothy P -- Kadambi, Ananth -- di Tomaso, Emmanuelle -- Carreira, Carla Mouta -- Brown, Edward B -- Boucher, Yves -- Choi, Noah C -- Mathisen, Douglas -- Wain, John -- Mark, Eugene J -- Munn, Lance L -- Jain, Rakesh K -- R24-CA85140/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2002 Jun 7;296(5574):1883-6. Notes: [Auszug] Co-evolution between host and pathogen is, in principle, a powerful determinant of the biology and genetics of infection and disease. Yet co-evolution has proven difficult to demonstrate rigorously in practice, and co-evolutionary thinking is only just beginning to inform medical or veterinary ...

Notes: [Auszug] Kitching express concerns about our mathematical models of reactive vaccination strategies for the control of foot-and-mouth disease epidemics. However, in our view, these concerns are misplaced. Kitching et al. note that simulated epidemic sizes can be highly variable, but they ...

Notes: [Auszug] Every year in Britain, as in many other countries, millions of cattle are moved between livestock farms, markets and abattoirs. This practice is known to contribute to the spread of infectious diseases, and a study by Gilbert et al. (page 491 of this issue) suggests that it is implicated ...

Notes: [Auszug] International debate on the merits of vaccinating poultry against the H5N1 influenza A virus has raised concerns about the possibility of an increased risk of between-flock transmission before outbreaks are detected. Here we show that this 'silent spread' can occur because of incomplete ...
