Notes: Abstract A method of obtaining high polarization and pure spin states of impurity nuclei with a moderately strong quadrupole interaction in solid diamagnetic hosts whose nuclei have spin 1/2, a large g factor (like 1H and 19F), and a high degree of polarization is proposed. The method employs cross-relaxation transitions of the impurity nuclei with the host spins (with adiabatic variation of the external magnetic field) and simple radio-frequency pulses that invert the host nuclei or give rise to two-spin resonance of the host and impurity nuclei.

Notes: Abstract The asymptotic behavior of the spectra for large values of the scattering vector for the case of elastic multiple small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is investigated theoretically and experimentally. An expansion of the spectrum in terms of the reciprocal of the magnitude of the momentum transfer is obtained taking account of the influence of the instrumental line. It is shown that, to within some factor, the leading term of the expansion is identical to the differential single-scattering cross section averaged over a statistical ensemble of particles; several subsequent terms in the expansion are calculated and the range of applicability of the resulting expressions is determined. The asymptotic behavior of the multiple SANS spectrum is measured, using a two-crystal neutron spectrometer, for samples of an HTSC ceramic, the alloy Fe-Ni, and Al powder. The agreement between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions is analyzed.

Notes: Abstract The dependence of the spectra of small-angle multiple neutron scattering on the volume fraction occupied by scattering grains is considered. The concentration expansion is used to develop scattering theory in the eikonal approximation. The leading term of the expansion reproduces the standard low-concentration theory (Mollier). Some properties of the first correction term are analyzed, and it is shown that the angular distribution narrows with an increase in concentration, in qualitative agreement with the experimental data.

Notes: Abstract A model for verifying and developing the fundamental ideas underlying the ergodic hypothesis is proposed. The model describes the dynamics of the spin subsystem formed by impurity charges with spin I and a small g factor in a crystal immersed in a strong constant external magnetic field under conditions where the spin system of the nuclei in the crystal is isolated from the other degrees of freedom. The additive integral of motion is the projection of the total spin of the subsystem onto the external field. Attention is focused mainly on the case of I=1/2. It is shown that the ergodic hypothesis holds if the correlation radius is finite in the initial state and that the ergodic hypothesis is violated if the initial state is sharply localized or has global correlation. The nonergodicity of the 8Li− 6Li spin subsystem, which is a convenient object for experimental investigations of spin dynamics, is revealed. An estimate is obtained for the time for transition from a sharply localized disturbance of the canonical distribution to a quasiequilibrium state.

Notes: Abstract Experiments with char samples provide support for the theory of EPR line shape in a system of surface paramagnetic centers with dipole-dipole interactions. It is also demonstrated that, if a strong Heisenberg exchange dominates over the dipole-dipole interactions, the EPR line of a two-dimensional system narrows and acquires Lorentzian shape, similar to the three-dimensional case.

Notes: Abstract The free-induction decay signals for the two-spin clusters, the “matrix,” and the entire spin system as a whole are calculated for a real dipole-dipole interaction on the basis of a method for the cluster expansion of correlation functions previously developed by the authors. The intracluster interactions, which generate a discrete spectrum, are taken into account exactly, and the interactions outside the clusters are taken into account on the basis of the Anderson-Weiss-Kubo (AWK) theory of phase relaxation. The corresponding shape functions of the resonance line are calculated. Before the clusters are separated, an AWK analysis in the limit of slow fluctuations of the local fields is in satisfactory agreement with the exact results obtained in the Anderson model of dipolar interactions, but a similar analysis for realistic fluctuation rates and Dt?1 leads to a significant qualitative difference: exp(−Dt) transforms into $$\exp ( - \sqrt {D_1 t} )$$ . After the clusters are separated, this difference is obliterated. The free-induction decay is almost exponential up to Dt∼10, and nonexponential behavior of the long-time asymptote appears sooner. This finding is not altered significantly when the analysis is complicated by raising the maximum rank of the clusters to 3 or more.

Notes: Abstract Random walks in disordered media with dipole-dipole transition rates are considered. The long-time asymptotics of the process are investigated on the basis of a new numerical simulation method, which includes periodic continuation of the system without periodic continuation of the initial condition. It is shown that the long-time asymptotics have a diffusive character. The concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficient for simple cubic and face-centered cubic lattices is studied.

Notes: Abstract β-NMR-spectroscopy investigations of the resonance at double Larmor frequency of β-active nuclei8Li in LiF polycrystals are presented. The quantitative analysis of the dislocation influence on this resonance is developed. An important role of correlations in dislocation distributions as well as high responsivity of this resonance to quadrupole interactions are found.

Notes: Abstract Random-jump models of transport in disordered systems are studied. They are described by the master equationP=−AξP, whereA is the generator of a spatially and temporally uniform random walk on a regular lattice, ξ is a diagonal operator, and ξ xy =ξ x δ xy , where {ξ x } are independent non-negative bounded random variables having the same distribution. A detailed analysis is made of the case when the transition rates are due to an interaction of multipole type and ξ x have several negative first moments (model of isotropic random jumps with long-range transport). Methods are developed for constructing asymptotic expansions of the propagator for small values of the Laplace parameter and at large times. An expansion is also obtained by means of a functional integral. The influence of both the long-range interaction and the disorder of the medium on the establishment of the long-time asymptotic behavior is considered. A method of investigating systems with forced drift along a certain direction is suggested. Methods of transforming asymptotically exactly solvable problems and connections with other known systems and realistic models are discussed. An estimate is obtained of thel 1 norm of the resolvent of a Markov process with countable set of states andl 1-bounded generator.
